I nodded slowly, glancing away for a moment before looking back at her. I did not want to disappoint her. Not
that I had the heart to refuse her anyway.
"I will take you tonight, then."
Her eyes widened instantly. "Truly?" she asked, her voice bursting with excitement.
I nodded once.
Evy clapped her hands together, nearly bouncing on her feet like the very child she had just insisted she was not.
"I knew you would say yes!" she declared proudly.
"Do not celebrate yet," I said dryly. "If your father finds out I aided you in escaping his watch, I may very well be forced to fight him."
She waved a dismissive hand. "Father likes you too much to do that."
"That is a dangerous assumption."
Evy tilted her head, studying me with that sharp gaze of hers that missed very little.
"You look tired," she said suddenly.
"I am."
"Council meeting?"
"Yes."
She groaned dramatically. "Those old men would bore even the dead."
"That is precisely their talent." I said plainly.
