NORA
Nora did not feel victory.
She felt the shape of a cage.
Aldridge's boundary sat in her mind like a fresh bruise.
No meetings outside workshop.
It wasn't a rule.
It was a leash.
Ethan walked beside her in the hallway, shoulders tense, hands still curled like he wanted to punch a wall and didn't know which one.
Priya trailed on the other side, humming under her breath like she was pleased.
That irritated Nora almost as much as Aldridge.
They made it down the stairs and out into the rain.
The sky was a sheet of grey. The campus looked washed out, like someone had lowered the saturation to make the drama easier to see.
Nora stopped under the overhang.
Ethan stopped too.
Priya kept walking for two steps, then turned back.
"Okay," Priya said. "Now we talk."
"No," Nora said.
Priya blinked.
"Excuse me?" Priya asked.
Nora's jaw tightened.
"You do not get to turn this into a plan you run," Nora said.
Priya's smile sharpened.
"I'm not running anything," Priya said. "I'm saving you."
Ethan let out a short laugh.
It wasn't amused.
"No one asked to be saved," Ethan said.
Priya's eyes flashed.
"You should," she said.
Nora lifted her chin.
"Stop," Nora said.
They both went quiet.
Rain drummed on the concrete.
Nora exhaled slowly.
"Aldridge wants us reactive," she said. "He wants us emotional. He wants us messy."
Priya tilted her head.
"He wants you obedient," Priya said.
Nora didn't deny it.
"So we don't give him obedience," Nora said. "And we don't give him a scandal."
Ethan stared at her.
"How?" he asked.
Nora's mouth tightened.
"By being smarter than his rule," she said.
Priya smiled.
"Now you're speaking my language," Priya said again.
Nora shot her a look.
"Don't," Nora warned.
Priya held up her hands. "No clever. I remember."
Ethan rubbed his forehead.
"We can't meet," he said.
"We can," Nora corrected. "We just can't be seen meeting."
Ethan's jaw flexed.
"So what, we hide in the stacks like criminals?" he asked.
Nora's eyes stayed steady.
"We already are," she said.
Ethan went still.
Priya let out a soft sound.
"God," Priya said. "That was hot."
Nora ignored her.
She turned to Ethan.
"Listen," Nora said. "Aldridge's boundary is aimed at one thing."
Ethan swallowed.
"Bonding," he said.
Nora nodded.
"He doesn't fear you writing better," she said. "He fears you improving together."
Ethan's throat tightened.
Nora continued.
"So we remove the obvious access," she said. "We keep the influence."
Ethan stared.
"How do we keep influence without meeting?" he asked.
Nora pulled her notebook out.
She flipped to a clean page.
She wrote two words:
PUBLIC CRITIQUE
Then, beneath it:
PRIVATE PRACTICE
She showed it to him.
"Workshop is public," she said. "We use it. We push harder. We ask sharper questions."
Ethan frowned.
"And private?" he asked.
Nora's pen hovered.
"We don't meet," she said. "We exchange pages."
Ethan blinked.
"By email?" he asked.
Nora's jaw tightened.
"Not official channels," she said.
Priya leaned in.
"Drop boxes," Priya said.
Nora looked at her.
Priya's eyes gleamed.
"Like spies," Priya said.
Ethan stared at Nora.
Nora didn't smile.
"Like writers," she said.
Ethan's mouth tightened.
"This is insane," he said again.
"This is survival," Nora said.
Priya's grin softened.
"See?" Priya said. "You and I agree more than you want."
Nora turned her gaze back to Ethan.
"We set rules," Nora said.
Ethan's eyebrows lifted.
"More rules?" he asked.
Nora nodded.
"Rules are how you keep a secret from becoming a story," she said.
Ethan's throat tightened.
He understood.
Nora wrote on the page:
1. No texts about pages.
2. No texts about Aldridge.
3. No meeting in the library.
4. No meeting in the cafe.
5. No meeting where Priya can watch and enjoy.
Priya made a sound.
"Hey," Priya said.
Nora didn't look at her.
Ethan's mouth twitched.
"Where do we meet?" Ethan asked.
Nora tore the page out and folded it.
"We don't," she said.
Ethan stared.
"Then how do we exchange pages?" he asked.
Nora looked up.
"Mailboxes," she said.
Ethan blinked.
"Your mailbox?" he asked.
Nora's jaw tightened.
"Not mine," she said. "Neutral."
Priya snapped her fingers.
"The department mailroom," Priya said.
Nora nodded.
"The department mailroom," Nora repeated. "We use manila envelopes. No names. Only initials."
Ethan's throat tightened.
"This is a conspiracy," he said.
Nora's eyes held his.
"It's a craft partnership," she said.
Ethan's pulse kicked.
Craft partnership.
That was safer than us.
It still sounded like a lie.
Priya adjusted her tote bag.
"Okay," Priya said. "I can do that."
Nora's gaze snapped to her.
"No," Nora said.
Priya blinked.
"Excuse me?" Priya asked.
Nora's voice went flat.
"You are not part of it," Nora said.
Priya's smile faltered.
"I'm the reason you didn't get crushed in there," Priya said.
Nora didn't flinch.
"You're the reason Aldridge knows we're bonding," Nora said.
Priya's eyes widened.
Ethan's stomach dropped.
Priya's mouth opened.
"That's not fair," Priya said.
Nora's throat tightened.
"Fair doesn't pay," she said.
Priya went still.
For the first time, her cheer fell away.
"You think I would sell you?" Priya asked.
Nora stared at her.
"I think you would talk," Nora said.
Priya swallowed.
Ethan watched her face.
Priya didn't look offended.
She looked hurt.
"Okay," Priya said quietly. "Okay. I won't."
Nora's chest tightened.
She didn't want to hurt Priya.
She also didn't have the luxury of being kind.
Ethan spoke.
"Priya," he said. "Thank you."
Priya looked at him.
"Don't thank me," she said. "Win."
Nora's jaw tightened.
She folded the paper with the rules and handed it to Ethan.
"Burn this," she said.
Ethan stared.
"Seriously?" he asked.
Nora's eyes held his.
"Seriously," she said.
Ethan nodded.
He tucked it into his pocket.
Rain continued.
The campus felt like it was listening.
Nora looked at Ethan.
"We can't meet," she said again. "But we can still write."
Ethan's throat tightened.
"And the kiss?" he asked, quietly.
Nora's breath caught.
Rule one.
Do not mention the kiss.
She looked at him.
"That wasn't part of the plan," she said.
Ethan nodded.
"Neither was Aldridge," he said.
Nora's mouth tightened.
"Now he is," she said.
Ethan's gaze held hers.
"So what now?" he asked.
Nora felt the rain-cold air on her skin.
She felt the cage.
She felt the urge to break it.
"Now," she said, "we make him regret noticing us."
Ethan's pulse kicked.
Priya let out a low whistle.
Nora ignored it.
She turned and walked into the rain.
Ethan followed.
And behind them, the building doors closed, heavy and final, like Aldridge thought he had drawn a line.
Nora smiled once, small and sharp.
Lines could be crossed.
