The pulse arrived at 2:17 AM.
Not the usual ambient signal — A-Train's heartbeat at the edge of awareness, the constant cardiac flutter Travis had been carrying since Day 108 like a second metronome. This was different in quality and different in volume, the specific distinction between background noise and a sound that demanded orientation.
Travis was awake before he processed it.
[CONTAGION NODE — A-TRAIN: EMERGENCY TRANSMISSION. EMOTIONAL STATE: ACUTE TERROR. CARDIAC RATE: 187 BPM. PHYSICAL STATUS: ELEVATED ADRENALINE, MOTOR RESPONSE ACTIVE — FIGHT-OR-FLIGHT. TRANSMISSION TYPE: HIGH-INTENSITY EMOTIONAL EVENT. ARCHIVES CAPTURE: INITIATING.]
187 BPM was the cardiac danger zone. For someone with A-Train's V-stressed heart, 187 BPM was the specific number that Travis had been monitoring as the threshold above which intervention became the variable against outcome. He sat up. He checked the node status. A-Train was stationary — the location feed put him inside Vought Tower, forty-seventh floor, which was Stormfront's floor.
The Archives were already working.
---
What arrived over the next eleven minutes was fragmentary — high-intensity emotional transmissions through the Contagion link had the quality of a fire hose rather than a faucet, volume without complete precision, sensory and emotional data arriving faster than the Archives could fully reconstruct in real time. Travis sat in the dark and received it.
The ozone smell came first. Not a description — the specific sensation of ozone, sharp and electric, transmitted through the empathic link with the quality of something A-Train had registered at a biological level before he'd processed it cognitively.
Then: a sound. High, brief, cut short with the specific abruptness of a sound that had been vocal and had stopped being vocal. The Archives flagged this as: PROBABLE HUMAN VOCALIZATION, INTERRUPTED. CAUSE: TRAUMA TO SUBJECT OR LOSS OF CONSCIOUSNESS.
Then: a voice, low, accented — the German register that surfaced in Stormfront's cadence when the social media overlay had dropped. The Archives captured fragments: —report to no one— and —understand what I am— and the specific quality of a sentence delivered to someone who had just watched something irreversible happen.
Then A-Train's heartbeat at 187 and holding.
[ATROCITY ARCHIVES — RECONSTRUCTION COMPLETE: 85% CONFIDENCE.]
[EVENT: STORMFRONT DEMONSTRATED ELECTRICAL ABILITY ON VOUGHT SECURITY PERSONNEL IN PRIVATE LOCATION. VICTIM STATUS: PROBABLE INCAPACITATION (SEVERITY UNKNOWN — DEATH OR UNCONSCIOUSNESS). A-TRAIN WITNESS. STORMFRONT SUBSEQUENTLY THREATENED A-TRAIN WITH EQUIVALENT TREATMENT IF EVENT DISCLOSED. GERMAN-LANGUAGE REGISTER SURFACED DURING THREAT — CONSISTENT WITH LIBERTY-ERA BEHAVIORAL PROFILE.]
[+80 MP — WITNESSED ATROCITY (CONTAGION NETWORK RELAY). NOTE: NETWORK RELAY ATROCITIES YIELD REDUCED MP FROM DIRECT WITNESS BUT NO PHYSICAL EXPOSURE RISK.]
Travis looked at the time. 2:28 AM.
He put his phone on the desk. He waited.
---
A-Train called at 3:04 AM.
The call came through the Soltero's contact number — the one Travis had given him as "Travis," no last name, the coffee shop contact that had no connection to any other identity layer Travis maintained. The number had been used for Tuesday coffee scheduling and one "bad day" text and now this.
Travis answered on the second ring.
"Travis." A-Train's voice had the quality of a man who had been sitting with something for forty-six minutes and had not been able to reduce it through sitting. "Something's wrong with Stormfront."
Travis waited.
"She's — I saw something. Tonight. In the Tower. And she said if I told anyone—" He stopped. The stop had the quality of someone running a calculation about how much to say and losing confidence in every option. "She's not what they're selling."
"What did you see?" Travis said.
"I can't." The breath on the line had a specific texture — elevated, shallowed, the physical signature of someone whose nervous system had not returned to baseline. "I can't say it on a phone."
"Okay," Travis said. "I hear you."
"She knows things," A-Train said. "Things about the company — about V — that don't make sense unless she's been here a long time. Like, longer than her file says. Way longer." A pause. "She talked to me in a different language. When she got angry."
Travis filed this. A-Train had clocked the German register without knowing what it was. The intuition of a man who'd spent seven years reading people in Seven briefings and knew when a vocal pattern didn't match the profile.
"Listen," Travis said. "Stay away from her. Don't put yourself in private situations. Be useful to Vought in the ways that don't involve her, and stay visible — in meetings, in team events, anywhere there are witnesses." A pause. "I'll look into the background."
He already had the background. All of it. Forty-five years of it, reconstructed from police reports and demographic data and the Appraisal Eye's first-generation biological read.
"You'll look into it," A-Train said. The repetition had the quality of someone anchoring themselves to a statement that represented safety.
"I'll look into it," Travis said. "Tuesday is still Tuesday."
The line was quiet for a moment.
"Yeah," A-Train said. "Okay."
He hung up.
---
Travis set the phone on the desk and looked at the ceiling.
[CONTAGION NODE — A-TRAIN: CARDIAC RATE DECLINING. CURRENT: 143 BPM. EMOTIONAL STATE: PARTIALLY REGULATED. NOTE: HOST'S VOICE CONTACT PRODUCED MEASURABLE ANXIETY REDUCTION IN NODE.]
The Hollow said: "His fear is delicious. The network is feeding beautifully."
"Yes," Travis said.
He got up and went to the window. Dupont Circle at 3 AM had the specific quality of a city that had reduced its noise without stopping entirely — the ambient sound of a place that was still going but going at a different register, the hour when the city showed its actual texture rather than its performed one.
Through the Contagion link: A-Train's heartbeat at 143 and declining. The flutter on every third beat. The specific percussion of a heart that had been at 187 forty minutes ago and was now trying to return to a normal that had never quite been normal.
The clinical concern and the human concern were producing the same response, which was: he needs to stay below 150 or the cardiac risk spikes.
Travis had been aware of this distinction — the clinical and the human — since the coffee shop. Since "Thanks, man, I mean it." Since the two extra seconds. He'd filed it under the category of things true but don't improve in examination and left it there. The filing was still there. The thing was still there alongside it.
He sat back down at his desk and opened the Stormfront intelligence file he'd been building since Day 97.
The new entry from the Archives was logged at the top: Day 141, Vought Tower, Floor 47, 85% confidence reconstruction. Security guard, electrical demonstration, German register during threat. He added A-Train's observation about the language shift and the "longer than her file says" intuition, which was worth noting separately from the Archives data because it was A-Train's own cognitive processing rather than the Contagion's transmission.
The file was now sixty-three pages.
He had the kill pattern from Day 45. He had the Stormfront-A-Train faction recruitment intelligence from Day 121. He had the Liberty-era documentation from the Appraisal Eye's cellular assessment. He had the live violence evidence from tonight. He had, in the Atrocity Archives' reconstruction, approximately 85% of the biographical thread that ran from 1938 to the present.
The Hollow said: "The moral cost continues accumulating."
"I know."
"You could end her with the file tonight. Bureau intelligence channel. Neuman would receive it by 7 AM."
"I know."
"But you won't."
Travis looked at the file. "Not yet."
The Hollow was quiet — not the quiet of acceptance, the quiet of a system that was documenting the choice and filing it alongside the forty-five pages of documentation it had been building on the gap between knowing and acting.
---
A-Train's heartbeat at 3:27 AM: 118 BPM. Still elevated above his damaged baseline but below the danger threshold. Declining.
Travis opened a second document. He'd been building it since Soltero's, Day 104 — not the intelligence product, not the Stormfront file, the other one. The one he'd titled ASSET MANAGEMENT — A-TRAIN and had been filling with the careful operational language of a man who was managing a Contagion node.
He looked at the most recent entry.
Day 108: "Thanks, man. I mean it." Two extra seconds after System confirmation. Filed.
Day 118: A-Train's grief-to-action trajectory recognized from Contagion echo. Noted alongside Hollow Anomaly #1 (Frenchie), Anomaly #2 (Hughie fear response). No classification assigned.
Day 121: A-Train's constant fear present at edge of awareness. Not a toggle. Permanent feature of active node.
Day 141: A-Train's heartbeat at 187 BPM. First cardiac danger-zone reading. Clinical concern and human concern producing identical output. The distinction is documented.
He looked at the last line.
Then he closed the document without adding to it.
[DEEP NODE ALERT — CONTAGION: PASSIVE MONITORING DETECTED EXTERNAL APPROACH TO SUBJECT. CLASSIFICATION: UNFAMILIAR CONTACT. EMOTIONAL IMPRESSION: SUBJECT EXPERIENCING CAUTIOUS HOPE. NOTE: SUBJECT'S DORMANT NODE DOES NOT PROVIDE FULL RESOLUTION ON EXTERNAL PARTIES — APPROACH SENSED, IDENTITY UNKNOWN. ESTIMATED: ORGANIZED OUTREACH. TIMING: DAY 141, EVENING.]
Travis looked at the notification.
The Church of the Collective. It had to be — the timing was canon-consistent, the emotional signature matched the specific quality of someone receiving a targeted outreach from an organization that had done its homework. The Deep had been alone in Sandusky with twelve aquariums and no calls for weeks before Travis, and now he had Travis and now he had this.
Travis's window on The Deep's node was narrowing.
If the Church established its own relationship before Travis activated the node and deepened the "mentor" dependency, the Church's influence architecture would compete with the Contagion's. Two external parties with competing emotional claims on an extremely malleable target — the Church had resources and infrastructure and the specific institutional competence of an organization that had been recruiting isolated Supes for years before Travis had arrived in this universe.
He needed to activate The Deep's node before the Church's relationship solidified.
He opened his phone. It was 3:41 AM.
The Deep's contact number — Kevin, reputation mgmt — was in his recents.
He could call now. Wake Kevin up. Manufacture an excuse. Establish contact and use it to activate the node.
He looked at the time. Looked at the notification.
Cautious hope. The specific emotional signature of a drowning person who'd just been offered a hand and hadn't yet determined if the hand was pulling them to shore or under.
Travis put the phone face-down on the desk.
He'd call at 9 AM. Professional hours. Reason: follow-up on Week 2 implementation steps. The pretext would hold and Kevin would be glad to hear from him and the node activation wouldn't require manufactured urgency.
The Church had approached tonight. They wouldn't have him by 9 AM.
He hoped.
The Hollow said: "The network requires maintenance. You're learning this."
A-Train's heartbeat at 3:44 AM: 108 BPM. Almost there.
Travis opened the Stormfront file again and kept reading.
