Chapter 5 - The Trial of the Bound Souls

Lyra and Kael stood still, their hands linked, facing the dark shapes that rippled like waves of living shadows. The air was heavy with an oppressive energy that seemed to drain the warmth from their bodies. Every breath they took was a struggle, as if the universe itself resisted their presence.

Kael stepped forward, his eyes fixed on the shifting shadows.

— Stay behind me, he murmured. I won't let you fall.

Lyra shook her head slightly, a shiver running down her spine.

— No. We have to do this together.

— Together, Kael echoed, his voice deep, yet full of certainty.

The darkness suddenly stirred, forming a massive barrier that split the twilight sky in two. Figures emerged, and each seemed to be a twisted version of themselves: Lyra with eyes drained of light, Kael radiating coldness and violence.

— The trial of the bound souls begins now, the icy voice of Erelya resonated behind them. You must face your doubles and acknowledge who you truly are. Only the truth of your bond will allow you to survive.

Lyra felt her heart tighten. She had never imagined that the battle would be so personal. It wasn't only a fight against the darkness, but against her own fears and doubts, manifested as her corrupted double.

— Kael… I… she began, her voice trembling.

— I know, he interrupted softly. I feel everything you feel. But we are stronger together. Never forget that.

Their doubles advanced, and the first strike was swift and brutal. Lyra narrowly dodged, feeling the dark energy crash beside her. Kael blocked his double's attack with incredible force, the clash echoing like thunder across the infinite space. Every movement of their doubles seemed to anticipate theirs, as if their past and present lives were being used against them.

Lyra closed her eyes, trying to draw strength from her memories. She recalled the first intense vision—the black flower fields—and Kael in that past life. A flash of understanding surged through her mind: their bond was not limited to this life, but woven across time and reincarnations.

— Kael… use the bond! she shouted.

Kael understood immediately. He placed his hands over hers, and a radiant energy erupted around them. The doubles recoiled, surprised by the unexpected strength of their fused souls. Lyra felt the power of every past life flowing into her, transforming fear into courage, doubt into determination.

— We are… inseparable, she whispered as their combined light pushed the doubles back.

But Erelya was not impressed.

— You've only used a fraction of your bond. This is not enough. You must understand the true meaning of your union.

At that moment, a vision appeared: Lyra saw Kael alone, in an ancient life, sacrificing himself to protect a version of her she did not recognize. Tears welled up in her eyes. She realized that their bond was built on sacrifice and total trust.

— Kael… I trust you, she breathed. Even if I fall, I know you will never leave me.

The doubles struck again, faster and smarter, but this time Lyra and Kael moved as one being, anticipating each other's moves, reacting instinctively. Every blocked attack seemed to reveal more of the truth about their past lives and destiny.

As the battle reached its peak, a burst of light exploded, sending the doubles into the void. Silence returned, but Erelya had yet to speak. Lyra and Kael, panting, looked at each other, their eyes shining with exhaustion and relief.

— You understand now… Erelya finally murmured, her voice softer yet still heavy with power. Your bond is real. You are two souls bound through the eons, destined to face what is to come together. But this is only the first step. The true challenge awaits at the heart of the cycle… and it will demand everything from you: body, heart, and mind.

Lyra shivered. Every word from Erelya carried both a promise and a threat. She knew the path ahead would be long, dangerous, and full of loss, but the bond she shared with Kael gave her a strength she had never imagined.

As they stood there, exhausted but alive, a reddish light appeared in the twilight sky. A massive, indistinct figure descended slowly, radiating an aura of power and malice.

— It's… the Master of the Cycle, Kael whispered, his voice tense. He will not tolerate anyone defying the order of souls. And now he knows you are awakened.

Lyra felt her chest tighten. The Master of the Cycle… the name alone invoked fear and respect. But she could no longer retreat. She placed her hand on Kael's, and they stepped forward together, the light of their bond illuminating the space around them.

— No matter what happens… Kael murmured, we will survive. Together.
