Chapter 17 - The Price of Becoming

The moment Elena took Varian's hand, the world did not break.

It aligned.

Not in a way she could see—

But in a way she felt.

Deep.

Final.

Like something ancient had just recognized her… and answered.

A sharp pulse surged through her veins, not painful, but overwhelming—like her blood had suddenly remembered something her mind hadn't caught up to yet.

She gasped.

Not out of fear—

Out of impact.

Varian didn't let go.

"Easy," he murmured, his voice lower now, steadier. "You're crossing a threshold."

Elena's vision blurred for a second.

The forest around them didn't disappear—but it shifted, its edges softening, its presence dimming compared to something else rising within her.

Her wolf.

Not just awake.

Present.

Fully.

Not beside her.

Not beneath her.

With her.

Kael stepped forward immediately. "What did you do to her?"

Varian didn't look away from Elena. "Nothing she didn't allow."

"That's not an answer."

"It's the only one that matters."

Elena clenched her jaw as the sensation intensified.

It wasn't pain.

It was expansion.

Like her body was too small for what was inside it.

"I can feel…" she started, her voice uneven.

Then stopped.

Because she didn't have the right word for it.

Everything.

The forest.

The movement of the wind between the trees.

The distant pulse of life hidden in the shadows.

Even the others behind Varian—

She felt them.

Not their thoughts.

But their presence.

Distinct.

Sharp.

Alive.

Her breath hitched.

"This isn't normal," she said.

Varian's grip tightened slightly—not restraining, but grounding.

"No," he said. "It's not."

Kael moved closer, his voice sharper now. "Let go of her."

Varian finally looked at him.

And for the first time—

There was no calm in his eyes.

"Step back," he said.

Kael didn't move.

"Or what?" he challenged.

The air between them shifted.

Not loudly.

Not violently.

But enough.

Enough to make the ground feel unstable beneath their feet.

The others behind Varian straightened slightly.

Ready.

Not aggressive.

But prepared.

Elena forced a breath through her lungs.

"Stop," she said, stronger this time.

Both of them froze.

She pulled her hand away from Varian's.

The moment their connection broke—

The surge receded.

Not gone.

Just… contained.

Controlled.

For now.

Elena steadied herself.

Her heartbeat slowed.

But her senses didn't.

They stayed heightened.

Sharper than before.

Different.

She looked at her hands again.

Nothing visible.

But everything had changed.

"What was that?" she asked.

Varian watched her closely.

"A beginning."

"That's vague."

"It's supposed to be."

She frowned slightly.

"I don't like vague."

A faint smirk touched his lips. "You won't like what comes next either."

Kael stepped in beside her, his presence solid, grounding.

"You're not going anywhere with them," he said.

Elena glanced at him.

Then back at Varian.

"They're not wrong," she said quietly.

Kael blinked. "Excuse me?"

She crossed her arms slightly, her gaze steady.

"I need answers."

"You think they'll give you the truth?" Kael shot back.

Varian tilted his head slightly. "We don't deal in lies."

Kael let out a short, humorless laugh. "Everyone says that."

Elena's eyes didn't leave Varian.

"Then prove it."

A pause.

Then Varian nodded once.

"Fair."

He stepped back slightly, giving her space.

"Ask."

Elena didn't hesitate.

"What happens if I don't go with you?"

Varian's answer came immediately.

"You stay alive longer than most."

Kael's jaw tightened.

"And then?" Elena pressed.

Varian's gaze darkened slightly.

"Then the hunters stop testing you… and start ending you."

Silence.

Cold.

Real.

Elena exhaled slowly.

"And if I do go with you?"

This time—

Varian took a moment.

Choosing his words.

"You lose the option of going back to what you were."

Kael's voice cut in immediately. "That's not a choice. That's a trap."

"No," Varian said calmly.

"That's truth."

Elena's gaze flickered between them.

One grounded in the present.

The other—

Rooted in something older.

"Define 'lose'," she said.

Varian's eyes held hers.

"You won't be able to pretend you're just surviving anymore."

Something in her chest tightened.

Because that—

That hit too close.

Kael softened slightly, his voice quieter now.

"You don't need them to figure this out."

Elena looked at him.

For a moment—

Just a moment—

There was hesitation.

Then it passed.

"Yes," she said softly.

"I do."

Kael's expression hardened again.

"Why?"

She held his gaze.

"Because you don't have answers either."

That landed.

He didn't deny it.

Couldn't.

Elena turned back to Varian.

"What's the price?" she asked.

This time—

He didn't answer right away.

The others behind him shifted again, subtle, almost unreadable.

Then—

"You already started paying it," he said.

Her eyes narrowed slightly. "That's not an answer."

"It is," he replied. "You just don't recognize it yet."

Elena stepped closer.

"Then make me understand."

Varian's expression changed slightly.

Less distant.

More direct.

"The more you become what you are," he said, "the less the world will feel like it belongs to you."

A pause.

"Or you to it."

That… wasn't what she expected.

Kael spoke quietly this time.

"He's not wrong."

Elena glanced at him.

"You've seen it happen?" she asked.

His silence was answer enough.

She looked back at Varian.

"And you?" she asked. "Do you regret it?"

For the first time—

Varian didn't respond immediately.

His gaze shifted slightly, not avoiding—but remembering.

Then—

"No," he said.

But there was something behind that answer.

Something not spoken.

Elena caught it.

But didn't push.

Not yet.

Instead—

She exhaled slowly.

Then nodded once.

"Fine."

Kael stiffened beside her. "Elena—"

"I'm not choosing sides," she cut in calmly.

"I'm choosing to understand what I am before someone else decides it for me."

Silence.

Then—

Varian extended his hand again.

Not closer this time.

Just enough.

An offer.

Not a command.

Elena stared at it for a second.

Then—

She didn't take it.

Instead, she stepped past him.

"I'll walk," she said.

A faint smile touched his lips.

"Of course you will."

Kael grabbed her arm.

"Think about this."

She looked at him.

Really looked.

"I am."

A pause.

Then softer—

"I just think differently than you do."

His grip loosened.

Not fully.

But enough.

"You don't trust them," he said.

"No," she agreed.

"Then why go?"

Elena's gaze hardened slightly.

"Because they don't scare me."

That answer—

That was what broke the moment.

Kael let go.

Not because he agreed.

But because he understood.

She wasn't going to stop.

Varian turned, signaling the others.

They moved instantly, silently, slipping back into the trees like shadows that belonged there.

Elena followed.

Not behind.

Not hesitant.

Equal distance.

Kael stood still for a moment.

Watching.

Then swore under his breath—

And followed anyway.

Because leaving her alone with them—

Wasn't an option.

The forest swallowed them quickly.

The deeper they went, the quieter everything became.

Not empty.

Not dead.

Just… aware.

Elena felt it again.

That pull.

Stronger now.

Guiding.

Not forcing.

"You feel it," Varian said without looking back.

"Yes."

"Good."

They moved for a while in silence.

Then—

Elena spoke.

"You said I'm not like the others."

"Yes."

"Then what am I?"

Varian slowed slightly.

Just enough.

"You're what comes after."

The words settled into her chest like something waiting to grow.

Behind them—

Kael's expression darkened.

Ahead—

The path narrowed.

And the deeper they went—

The more the world they knew began to disappear.

Because this wasn't just a forest anymore.

This was a boundary.

And once crossed—

There would be no going back.
