Chapter 15 - The Betrayal

The rain hadn't stopped.

It followed Blackwood into the morning—soft at first, then steady, like the city itself was holding its breath.

At Blackwood City College, everything looked normal.

Students talked. Laughed. Walked to class.

But for Ryan and Elena, nothing felt the same.

"You didn't tell me everything last night," Elena said quietly as they walked through the corridor.

Ryan didn't slow down.

"There are things you don't need to know."

Elena stopped.

"Or things you don't want me to know?"

Ryan paused for a second… then kept walking.

That was answer enough.

Later that day, Elena sat alone in the library.

Ryan hadn't shown up for the last two classes.

That wasn't like him.

Something felt wrong.

Her fingers tightened around the edge of the table as she replayed the night in her head—

The shadow.

The voice.

The notebook.

"Final Phase."

And the way Ryan had looked at her after she opened it.

Cold.

Distant.

Almost… guarded.

"Looking for someone?"

The voice came from behind.

Elena turned.

A boy stood there—tall, calm, with a faint smile.

"I've seen you around," he continued. "You're Elena, right?"

She nodded slowly. "Yes… do I know you?"

He pulled out a chair and sat across from her.

"Adrian," he said. "Second year."

There was something strange about him.

Not obvious.

But enough to make Elena uneasy.

"You seem worried," Adrian added casually. "About Ryan."

Elena's eyes narrowed slightly.

"How do you know that?"

Adrian smiled faintly.

"Because I know him."

A pause.

Then—

"Better than you think."

Elena leaned forward.

"What do you mean?"

Adrian's expression didn't change.

"Ryan isn't who you think he is."

Her heart skipped.

"He's involved in things that people don't walk away from."

Elena's voice hardened. "If you know something, just say it."

Adrian studied her for a moment.

Then he spoke quietly.

"Daniel Carter didn't just disappear."

Elena's breath caught.

"Ryan was there… the night it happened."

Silence.

Heavy.

Uncomfortable.

"That's not possible," she said quickly. "He—"

"Goes out at night?" Adrian interrupted. "Visits abandoned places? Knows about the symbol?"

Each word hit harder than the last.

Elena didn't respond.

Because part of her…

already knew.

Adrian leaned back in his chair.

"You're getting pulled into something dangerous," he said. "And Ryan won't stop it."

A pause.

Then he added—

"He'll use you if he has to."

That evening, Elena stood alone outside the college gates.

Her mind was a storm of thoughts.

She wanted to ignore what Adrian said.

But the pieces…

They didn't fit anymore.

Ryan had been hiding things.

Too many things.

Footsteps approached.

She turned.

Ryan.

He stopped in front of her.

"You left without saying anything," he said.

Elena looked at him.

Really looked.

And for the first time—

She didn't feel sure.

"Were you at the railway station that night?" she asked suddenly.

Ray

Ryan didn't react.

But he didn't answer either.

That was enough.

Elena stepped back.

"You lied to me."

"I didn't lie," Ryan said calmly.

"I just didn't tell you everything."

"That's the same thing."

Silence stretched between them.

Cold.

Sharp.

Breaking.

Elena's voice lowered.

"I don't know if I can trust you anymore."

For a brief second—

Something flickered in Ryan's eyes.

Then it disappeared.

"Trust was never part of this," he said quietly.

Elena stepped back again.

This time, she didn't stop.

She turned and walked away.

Leaving Ryan standing alone.

From across the street, Adrian watched everything.

A faint smile formed on his face.

Because the plan was working.

Trust had been broken.

And the first move of the real game…

had just been made. 🌑📖
