Chapter 23 - Veil Of Truth

Night wrapped Blackwood in silence once again.

Hidden inside an abandoned warehouse on the outskirts of the city, Ryan, Elena, and Adrian stood around a broken table, lit only by a dim hanging bulb.

For the first time—

They weren't running.

They were planning.

Ryan spread out the pages from his notebook.

Maps.

Symbols.

Marked locations.

All connected.

"This isn't random," he said.

His voice was calm, but sharp.

"Every location leads somewhere."

Elena leaned closer.

"Leads where?"

Ryan pointed to the center of the map.

A place that hadn't been marked before.

"Here."

Adrian's eyes narrowed slightly.

"You figured it out."

Ryan looked at him.

"You already knew."

Adrian didn't deny it.

Elena looked between them.

"Someone want to explain?"

Silence.

Then Adrian spoke.

"All those locations…" he said slowly,

"They're not targets."

A pause.

"They're pathways."

Elena frowned.

"Pathways to what?"

Ryan answered this time.

"To their main facility."

The room went still.

Elena's breath caught.

"You mean… where they take people?"

Ryan nodded.

"And where they change them."

Adrian added quietly—

"And where your brother is."

The words hit harder this time.

Because now—

It felt real.

Elena looked at the map again.

"So all of this…" she whispered,

"was leading you there?"

Ryan's eyes stayed fixed on the center point.

"No."

A pause.

"They were leading me there."

Silence.

Adrian smiled faintly.

"Exactly."

Elena felt a chill.

"So this whole thing…"

Her voice dropped.

"Was planned?"

Ryan didn't answer.

But he didn't need to.

Suddenly—

A faint sound came from behind them.

A small device on the table flickered to life.

All three turned.

The screen lit up.

Static.

Then—

A figure appeared.

Distorted.

Hidden.

Watching.

"Good," the voice said.

Calm.

Controlled.

Ryan stepped forward.

"You've been guiding this."

The figure tilted their head slightly.

"Guiding?"

A soft pause.

"No."

"Revealing."

Elena's voice shook slightly.

"What do you want from us?"

The figure didn't look at her.

Their focus stayed on Ryan.

"You already know."

Ryan's jaw tightened.

"My brother."

A brief silence.

Then—

"He's closer than you think."

Ryan stepped closer to the screen.

"Where is he?"

The figure leaned slightly forward.

"Find the center."

The screen flickered.

"And you'll find him."

Then—

Black.

The device shut off.

Silence filled the room.

Elena looked at Ryan.

"This could be another trap."

Ryan didn't look away from the blank screen.

"I know."

Adrian crossed his arms.

"And you still want to go."

Ryan finally turned.

His eyes steady.

Focused.

"They want me there."

A pause.

"Then I'll go."

Elena stepped forward.

"You're not going alone."

Adrian sighed softly.

"Looks like I'm coming too."

For a moment—

All three stood in silence.

Not as enemies.

Not as strangers.

But as something uncertain.

Fragile.

Temporary.

An alliance built on truth…

and lies.

Outside, wind moved through the empty streets of Blackwood.

And deep beneath the city—

A long corridor lit up again.

Footsteps echoed.

Slow.

Controlled.

A figure stopped in front of a locked door.

Inside—

A shadow moved.

And for a brief moment—

A pair of eyes opened.

Not normal.

Not human.

Watching.

Waiting.

Because the truth they were about to find…

Was far worse than anything they imagined. 🌑📖
