Chapter 32 - chapter thirty two: The Command in the Dark

The confrontation in the faculty lounge had left the campus feeling like a minefield. Every time I turned a corner, I expected to see Julian's protective face or Alex's stormy, haunting gaze. The air was thick with a new kind of fear. Julian had marked his territory, but I knew Alex—he didn't follow the rules of other men. He didn't accept "past" as an answer.

I was walking toward the old bell tower at the edge of the east wing, a place where students rarely went after sunset. The stone walls were cold, and the scent of damp moss and ancient dust filled the air. I needed to be alone. I needed to breathe without the weight of two powerful men pulling at my soul.

Suddenly, a hand reached out from the arched stone doorway and pulled me into the shadows of the stairwell.

I gasped, my heart leaping into my throat, but the familiar heat of his body stopped the scream before it could leave my lips. It was Alex. He had found a secret way to intercept me, away from the prying eyes of the security cameras and the whispering students.

"Alex! You're insane!" I hissed, my back pressed against the rough, cold stone. "If someone sees us here, the Board won't just fire you—they'll make sure you never work in this country again. And my scholarship—"

"Quiet," he commanded, his voice a low, vibrating growl that sent a shiver straight down my spine. He didn't touch me at first, but he stood so close I could feel the frantic rhythm of his heart through his expensive wool coat. "I don't care about the Board. I don't care about the cameras. I only care about what I saw in that lounge."

"You shouldn't have been there, Alex. You shouldn't have been spying."

"I saw the way he looked at you, Luna," Alex said, his eyes turning into dark pools of possessive madness. He stepped closer, pinning me with his shadow. "Julian doesn't just want to 'help' you with the archives. He wants you. He wants to take what belongs to me and pretend he's the hero because he wears a smile and speaks with a soft voice."

"He is kind to me, Alex! He doesn't treat me like a secret!"

"Because he has nothing to lose!" Alex roared quietly, his hands finally snapping out to grip the stone wall on either side of my head, trapping me. "I lost my family for you. I lost my reputation for you. I signed my soul away to that Board just so you could keep your seat in that classroom. And I will not watch you give your smiles to a boy who hasn't bled a drop for you."

He leaned down, his face inches from mine, his breath hot and dangerous on my skin.

"Listen to me carefully, Luna. This is not a request. You are not to talk to him anymore. You are not to meet him in the library, and you are definitely not going on another 'date.' If I see him near you again, I will forget every promise I made to protect your scholarship. I will tear this University apart before I let him claim you."

"You're being a monster," I whispered, my eyes filling with tears. "You can't control my life after you threw me out."

"I threw you out to save you!" Alex's voice broke, a raw, bleeding sound. He let go of the wall and grabbed my waist, pulling me flush against him. "But I cannot save you from myself. Seeing you with him... it's a poison, Luna. It's a fire that is burning me alive. You are mine. You have always been mine. Tell me you understand. Tell me you won't see him."

I looked into his eyes—the eyes of the "Perfect Professor" who had finally lost his grip on reality. I saw the pain, the obsession, and the unbreakable love that had led us to this wreckage. I felt a surge of happiness that he was this desperate, but I was also terrified. Julian wasn't a man who gave up easily, and he wanted me just as much as Alex did.

"I understand," I whispered, my voice trembling.

Alex didn't say anything. He simply crushed his lips against mine in a kiss that tasted of salt, desperation, and iron. It was a claim. It was a warning. And as he slipped back into the darkness, leaving me breathless in the cold stairwell, I realized that the war between the two professors was about to become a bloodbath.

Elena was still out there, her eyes everywhere, and Julian was waiting for me in the library. I was trapped between two fires, and I knew that no matter which way I turned, someone was going to burn.
