Chapter 68 - The Trap Tightens

Emily and Daniel moved cautiously through the dense forest, the early morning mist curling around their feet like ghostly fingers. Every sound a snapping branch, a distant birdcall—made Emily's pulse spike. Her muscles were tense, ready for a fight, ready to flee, ready for anything. She clutched the USB drive so tightly it burned her palm, the small device heavier than any weapon. It was the key to her past, her mother's secrets, and possibly the very heart of the Knight family empire.

"They're tracking us," Daniel whispered, his voice rough from exhaustion. "The Knight family doesn't miss."

Emily swallowed hard, her mind racing. Every time she thought she had a plan, every time she thought she could put space between herself and Alexander, a new threat appeared. Extraction teams, the Blackwood mercenaries, Voss's insane contingencies… they were relentless. But she couldn't run forever. Survival meant action, meant strategy, meant using her powers when necessary.

Hours passed in a tense blur. The forest seemed endless, every turn and every shadow a potential trap. Emily could feel her energy pulsing faintly, a residual flicker of the force that had erupted in the collapsing lab. It was weak now, unreliable, but enough to warn her, enough to make her cautious.

Suddenly, the ground trembled underfoot. Emily froze. Daniel's eyes widened. "Ambush," he breathed.

Before she could react, a series of lights cut through the trees. Mercenaries emerged, rifles raised, their Blackwood insignias glinting coldly in the sun. Emily's heart pounded. She had been careful. She had hidden. And yet, they were here.

"We fight, or we die," Emily muttered, her voice low and determined. Her hands began to glow faintly, energy lifting rocks and debris from the ground around her. Branches cracked and twigs snapped as the forest seemed to bend to her will, her fear and rage feeding the power.

The mercenaries hesitated, not fully expecting what they faced. That brief pause was enough. Emily's eyes snapped to Daniel. "Move!"

They ran through the trees, the sound of gunfire echoing behind them. Rocks lifted by her invisible force crashed into the attackers, sending them scrambling. Each movement felt like a battle between her fear and her control, her anger and her desire to survive.

Then, a flash of dark movement cut across their path. Alexander. Calm, commanding, and terrifyingly precise, he stepped between Emily and the mercenaries, deflecting shots with calculated efficiency. His presence stunned her, but his eyes—those eyes that had once promised love—held something new: urgency, desperation, and a silent question.

"Emily!" he called. "You're overextending! We need to fall back!"

She shook her head, fury rising. "No! I'm done running! I'm done hiding!"

Gunfire erupted again, the forest alive with chaos. Emily's energy flared, lifting branches and rocks into a swirling storm around them. Mercenaries fell back, shielding their faces. But as the dust and debris settled, Emily realized something terrifying: the entire clearing was rigged with explosives. Thin wires snaked through the underbrush, almost invisible against the dirt and roots.

Daniel's voice came sharp in her ear. "Trap! Step carefully!"

Emily froze. Her eyes scanned the ground, her hands trembling—not with fear, but with focus. Every instinct screamed that one wrong move could end everything. Alexander moved close, silently placing a hand on her shoulder. "Trust me," he whispered.

She looked at him, her heart twisting. Could she? After everything?

Before she could answer, a sharp click echoed through the clearing. A small explosion erupted, sending dirt and shrapnel into the air. Emily screamed, her powers flaring instinctively, creating a shield of rocks and debris around them. Alexander's eyes locked onto hers, urgency blazing.

"We can't stay here!" he shouted. "Follow me—now!"

Emily nodded, letting him guide her through the forest. Every step was tense, every movement calculated. The trap was closing, and the Knight family's reach was longer than she had imagined. But Emily wasn't just running. She was learning, adapting, growing stronger with every heartbeat.

As they reached a small ravine, Emily glanced back. The mercenaries were regrouping, reorganizing, closing in faster than she had thought possible. And then, from the shadows, a figure emerged. Calm, deliberate, smiling with cruel satisfaction.

Voss.

"You thought you could escape?" he called, his voice echoing across the trees. "You can run, Emily… but you cannot hide."

Emily's hands glowed brighter, energy spiraling into the air. Alexander stepped beside her, protective and determined. "We face this together," he said, his voice steady, resolute.

Emily swallowed hard. She nodded. They were trapped, outnumbered, and surrounded—but for the first time, she felt something she hadn't felt in weeks: purpose.

The forest held its breath as Voss advanced, the tension unbearable. Every choice, every step, could be the difference between survival and annihilation.

Emily gritted her teeth, ready. The fight wasn't over. Not by a long shot.
