Chapter 5 - Chapter 5 - Snow Beneath the Torchlight

Winter arrived early in Valoria that year.

The capital awoke one morning to find the city covered in white. Snow rested along rooftops, clung to the palace towers, and softened the once harsh stone streets of the kingdom.

To most people, winter meant celebration. Markets filled with warm food, musicians played in taverns, and the capital glowed with torchlight against the cold night.

But inside the royal palace, winter carried a different atmosphere.

Tension.

Rumors had begun spreading across noble circles about Princess Seraphina and the knight Arvin. Though none of them were spoken openly in the royal court, Seraphina could feel the change in the way certain nobles looked at her.

Some watched with curiosity.

Some with disapproval.

And some with quiet calculation.

But Seraphina refused to allow the whispers to control her.

Instead, she focused on what truly mattered—strengthening her position within the kingdom.

Still, there were moments when even a determined princess needed to breathe.

And whenever that happened, she always found herself in the same place.

The training grounds.

---

The snow had not yet been cleared from the courtyard when Seraphina arrived that evening.

The training yard was nearly empty, lit only by a few flickering torches placed along the stone walls.

In the center of the yard, a lone figure moved through the snow.

Arvin.

His sword cut through the cold air again and again, each strike powerful and precise. The snow beneath his boots had been completely disturbed by his constant movement.

Seraphina leaned quietly against the stone archway, watching him.

He had changed a lot since they were children.

The boy in the small knight's armor was gone.

In his place stood a young warrior with broad shoulders and steady eyes. Every movement carried discipline.

Yet somehow, when she looked at him, she still saw the same boy who had promised to protect her.

Arvin stopped swinging his sword.

"You're going to catch a cold standing there," he said without turning around.

Seraphina smiled slightly.

"You knew I was there?"

"You always watch quietly before speaking."

She stepped into the courtyard.

Snow crunched beneath her shoes.

"You're improving," she said.

Arvin lowered his sword.

"I have to."

Seraphina tilted her head.

"You say that every time."

"And it's still true every time."

She studied him for a moment.

The flickering torchlight reflected across his armor.

"Arvin," she said softly.

"Yes?"

"Have you heard the rumors?"

He looked at her.

"Yes."

"And?"

Arvin shrugged.

"People like to talk."

"That's all?"

"What else should it be?"

Seraphina crossed her arms.

"They're saying I'm reckless. That I've grown too close to a knight."

Arvin's voice remained calm.

"Have you?"

For a moment, Seraphina did not answer.

The snow continued to fall gently around them.

"Do you regret it?" she finally asked.

Arvin looked directly into her eyes.

"No."

The answer came without hesitation.

Seraphina felt her chest tighten slightly.

The entire world seemed quieter in that moment.

"Good," she said.

Arvin sheathed his sword.

"Why?"

"Because I don't regret it either."

For a few seconds, neither of them spoke.

The wind carried soft snowflakes through the courtyard.

Seraphina suddenly looked toward the torches along the walls.

"Come with me," she said.

"Where?"

"You'll see."

---

They walked beyond the palace walls to a small clearing near the royal training fields.

This place had once been a quiet spot where they played as children.

Tonight, it was covered in untouched snow.

Only one torch burned nearby.

Its flame flickered weakly against the falling snow.

Seraphina stood beneath it.

Arvin approached slowly.

"You used to come here whenever you were angry," he said.

Seraphina smiled faintly.

"I used to come here when I didn't understand the world."

"And now?"

"Now I understand it too well."

Arvin leaned his sword against a nearby tree.

"What do you mean?"

Seraphina looked toward the distant lights of the capital.

"This kingdom… the nobles, the court, the politics."

She sighed softly.

"Everything feels like a battlefield."

Arvin stepped closer.

"You're strong enough to face it."

Seraphina looked at him.

"You always believe that."

"Because it's true."

For a moment, the wind grew stronger.

The torch flickered violently.

Seraphina stepped closer to him.

"Arvin…"

"Yes?"

"If I become queen… everything will change."

"I know."

"They'll try to control me."

"I know."

"They'll try to separate us."

Arvin did not answer.

Instead, he simply looked at her.

The silence between them felt heavier than any words.

Then Seraphina took one more step forward.

Snowflakes rested gently in her hair.

"Tell me something honestly," she said.

Arvin waited.

"Do you think someone like me… is allowed to love someone like you?"

Arvin's expression softened.

"I think people who make rules about love have never experienced it."

Seraphina laughed quietly.

"You sound wiser than most nobles."

"I spend less time talking."

For a moment, they simply stood there.

Then a sudden gust of wind blew through the clearing.

The single torch beside them went out.

Darkness surrounded them.

Only the falling snow reflected faint moonlight.

Seraphina looked up at him.

And before either of them could overthink it—

She kissed him.

It was soft.

Gentle.

Like the light touch of snowflakes landing on warm skin.

For a moment, time seemed to stop.

When they slowly separated, neither of them spoke.

They didn't need to.

Both of them already understood what had changed.

The friendship that had begun when they were children had become something deeper.

Something dangerous.

Something that could shake the foundations of the kingdom.

---

High above the courtyard, a figure stood on the palace balcony.

Prince Malric.

He had watched everything.

His expression remained calm as he turned away from the railing.

"So," he murmured quietly.

"It's true."

A slow smile appeared on his face.

For months he had been spreading rumors.

Now he had proof.

And proof…

Was far more powerful than whispers.

As snow continued to fall across the capital of Valoria, Prince Malric began preparing the next step of his plan.

A step that would soon place Princess Seraphina in chains far stronger than iron.

The chains of royal duty.

And this time…

There would be no escape.
