Chapter 17 - Chapter 20: A Mysterious Assassin Attacks

Night had fallen over the vampire kingdom.

Dark clouds rolled slowly across the sky, swallowing the pale moonlight. The castle stood silent against the wind, its tall black towers cutting through the darkness like spears.

Inside the palace, the halls were quieter than usual.

But the silence was not peaceful.

It was tense.

Waiting.

Selena sat on the wide stone ledge of a tall window in the royal chamber, staring down into the courtyard below. Torches burned along the walls, their flames flickering as the wind moved through the castle.

Her mind refused to rest.

Adrian's warning from earlier echoed in her thoughts.

Someone is manipulating both kingdoms.

She didn't want to believe him.

But her instincts told her there was truth in his words.

Selena exhaled slowly.

"If someone really planned the attack on my pack…"

Her silver eyes hardened.

"I'll tear them apart."

The chamber door opened quietly.

Selena didn't even turn.

"You walk too quietly, vampire."

Adrian stepped inside and closed the door behind him.

"You hear everything."

"Wolf hearing."

She jumped down from the window ledge and faced him.

"You're late."

"I had meetings."

Selena smirked.

"You always have meetings."

"Running a kingdom requires time."

She crossed her arms.

"Did you solve the mystery of your invisible enemies yet?"

"No."

"Shocking."

Adrian walked toward the table and poured a drink from the crystal decanter.

"However…"

Selena raised an eyebrow.

"There was another incident tonight."

Her attention sharpened instantly.

"What kind of incident?"

"A guard was found unconscious near the western tower."

Selena frowned.

"That sounds familiar."

"Yes."

He took a slow sip.

"The same technique you used last night."

Selena's eyes narrowed.

"You think I did it?"

"I know you didn't."

"Good."

"But someone else is inside the castle."

A chill ran down Selena's spine.

Her wolf instincts reacted immediately.

Danger.

Real danger.

"Where?" she asked.

Adrian set the glass down.

"Unknown."

Selena stepped closer.

"You're telling me an assassin is wandering around the royal palace?"

"Yes."

"And your guards haven't found them?"

"Not yet."

Selena scoffed.

"Your security is terrible."

Adrian's voice remained calm.

"Which is why I came here."

She blinked.

"You think they're targeting me?"

"Possibly."

"Or you."

"More likely."

Selena walked slowly across the room, her senses sharpening.

The air felt wrong.

Heavy.

Her wolf stirred uneasily beneath her skin.

"Someone's here," she whispered.

Adrian didn't move.

"I know."

The candle flames flickered violently.

The balcony door suddenly burst open.

A shadow dropped into the room.

Fast.

Silent.

Deadly.

The assassin moved like a blur.

A curved blade flashed in the candlelight as the figure lunged straight toward Adrian's throat.

Selena reacted instantly.

"Adrian!"

She shoved him sideways.

The blade sliced through the air where his neck had been.

Adrian recovered quickly, grabbing a nearby chair and hurling it at the attacker.

The assassin twisted effortlessly, dodging the impact.

Selena stepped forward, her claws extending.

"Who the hell are you?"

The figure said nothing.

Their face was hidden beneath a dark hood.

Only glowing red symbols were carved into the mask covering their mouth.

Adrian's eyes narrowed.

"I've seen that mark before."

The assassin attacked again.

This time their blade swung toward Selena.

She ducked low and countered with a sharp kick to the attacker's ribs.

The assassin staggered back slightly but didn't fall.

Selena frowned.

"Strong."

Adrian moved beside her.

"Stay focused."

"I am."

The assassin spun the curved blade with frightening speed before rushing them again.

Selena blocked the strike with her claws, sparks flying as metal scraped against them.

Adrian struck from the side, aiming for the assassin's shoulder.

The attacker twisted, avoiding the blow.

But Selena seized the opportunity.

She slammed her elbow into the assassin's chest.

The figure flew backward into the stone wall.

The impact cracked the surface.

Yet the assassin stood again almost instantly.

Selena stared.

"Okay…"

"That's not normal."

Adrian's voice was cold.

"They're enhanced."

"By what?"

"I don't know."

The assassin suddenly reached into their cloak and threw something onto the floor.

A cloud of black smoke exploded through the chamber.

Selena coughed as the smoke burned her lungs.

"Poison!"

"Hold your breath," Adrian warned.

Through the haze, the assassin moved again.

This time their target was Selena.

The blade flashed toward her heart.

She twisted aside just in time, the weapon grazing her arm.

Pain burned through her skin.

Selena growled.

"Bad move."

Her wolf instincts surged forward.

Her strength exploded.

She grabbed the assassin's wrist and slammed them against the wall.

The stone cracked again under the force.

"Who sent you?" she demanded.

The masked figure remained silent.

Adrian stepped closer, his eyes glowing crimson.

"That symbol on your mask…"

His voice dropped dangerously low.

"Who do you serve?"

The assassin suddenly laughed.

The sound was distorted behind the mask.

Then their body began to shake.

Selena frowned.

"What are they doing?"

Adrian's eyes widened slightly.

"Move!"

He grabbed Selena and pulled her backward just as the assassin's body exploded in a burst of dark energy.

The shockwave shattered the windows and threw both of them across the chamber.

Selena slammed into the floor, sliding several feet before stopping.

Debris rained down from the ceiling.

For a moment the room was completely silent.

Then Selena groaned and pushed herself upright.

"What the—"

She looked toward where the assassin had stood.

Nothing remained.

No body.

No weapon.

Only scorch marks on the floor.

Adrian stood slowly nearby.

His expression had turned completely serious.

Selena wiped dust from her face.

"Well…"

"That was dramatic."

Adrian didn't respond.

He walked toward the scorch marks and studied them carefully.

Selena joined him.

"So?"

"Recognize your mystery cult?"

Adrian nodded slowly.

"Yes."

Her eyes narrowed.

"Who are they?"

Adrian's voice was grim.

"The Blood Moon cult."

Selena froze.

"The same cult you mentioned before?"

"Yes."

She looked at the destroyed section of the chamber again.

"They just tried to kill us."

"Yes."

Selena exhaled slowly.

"So your hidden enemy finally made a move."

Adrian's crimson eyes darkened.

"And now we know they're already inside the kingdom."

Selena glanced toward the broken balcony doors.

The wind howled through the ruined chamber.

"Well…"

She cracked her knuckles.

"Looks like your mysterious war just got personal."

Adrian met her gaze.

"It always was."

For the first time since arriving in the vampire kingdom, Selena felt something different growing inside her.

Not hatred.

Not revenge.

Something sharper.

War.

And somewhere in the shadows beyond the castle walls…

The Blood Moon cult was already preparing their next attack.
