Chapter 39 - Chapter 42: The Traitor Escapes

The palace did not sleep that night.

Even after the traitor had been exposed and dragged away in chains, a restless tension clung to the air like smoke after a fire. Guards doubled their patrols, nobles whispered behind closed doors, and servants avoided eye contact as if fear itself had taken physical form.

Selena stood at the balcony of her chambers, her silver eyes fixed on the courtyard below. Torches flickered along the stone walls, casting long shadows that twisted and shifted like living things.

Her wolf was uneasy.

Not the kind of unease that came from lingering danger—this was sharper, more urgent.

Something was wrong.

Behind her, the door opened without a sound. She didn't turn. She didn't need to.

"Adrian," she said quietly.

"You felt it too," he replied.

His voice was calm, but there was an edge beneath it—something tight, controlled.

Selena turned slowly. His crimson eyes were darker than usual, alert and burning with instinct.

"The palace is too quiet," she said. "After something like this, there should be panic. Noise. Movement."

Adrian nodded. "Instead… it feels like something is waiting."

Her wolf snarled softly beneath her skin.

"Or escaping."

They moved at the same time.

No more words were needed.

Selena grabbed her dagger, strapping it to her thigh, while Adrian pushed the chamber doors open. They stepped into the corridor, their movements swift and silent, instincts guiding them.

The halls were dim, torches flickering weakly.

Too weakly.

Selena frowned. "The guards?"

"Gone from their posts," Adrian said sharply.

That was all the confirmation they needed.

They broke into a run.

The corridor leading to the holding wing was eerily empty. No guards. No servants. Just silence and the faint scent of iron—blood.

Selena's heart pounded.

Her wolf surged forward, claws scraping beneath her skin, demanding release.

When they reached the holding chamber, the doors were wide open.

Inside—

Chaos.

Two guards lay motionless on the floor, blood pooling beneath them. The enchanted chains that had bound the traitor were shattered, their magic flickering weakly like dying embers.

Selena stepped forward slowly, her breathing controlled but sharp.

"He's gone."

Adrian crouched beside one of the guards, his expression darkening. "Not just gone. Helped."

Selena's eyes snapped to him. "What do you mean?"

He lifted the guard's wrist, revealing a thin, precise wound. "This wasn't a struggle. This was clean. Calculated. Someone on the inside freed him."

Her stomach tightened.

Another traitor.

A faint sound echoed from down the corridor.

Footsteps. Running.

Selena didn't hesitate.

"He's not far."

They took off again, chasing the sound through winding hallways and narrow passages.

The palace had become a maze of shadows and secrets—and tonight, it was alive with betrayal.

They burst into the lower courtyard just in time to see a figure cloaked in black scaling the outer wall.

The traitor.

"Stop!" Selena shouted.

The figure turned briefly, just enough for her to see his face—and the twisted smile on his lips.

Then he jumped.

Adrian moved instantly.

Faster than the eye could follow, he leapt upward, grabbing the edge of the wall and pulling himself over. Selena followed, her wolf lending her strength as she climbed with speed and precision.

They landed on the other side—

—and stepped into a trap.

Three figures emerged from the shadows, their eyes glowing faintly red. Vampires.

Not palace guards.

Not nobles.

Something darker.

"The cult…" Selena whispered.

The escaped traitor stood behind them, breathing heavily but grinning. "You're too late."

Adrian stepped in front of Selena, his stance protective. "You won't leave this place alive."

The traitor laughed. "You still don't understand, Prince. This was never about escape. It was about sending a message."

The three vampires lunged.

The fight was immediate. Brutal.

Selena ducked under a strike, spinning and slashing her dagger across her opponent's arm. Her wolf surged forward, sharpening her reflexes, guiding every movement.

Adrian fought beside her, a blur of lethal precision. His strength was overwhelming, his movements controlled yet devastating.

They moved together—

Not planned. Not spoken.

But perfectly in sync.

Selena blocked a strike aimed at Adrian's side, and he countered with a blow that sent her attacker crashing into the stone wall.

Their eyes met for a split second.

Understanding. Trust.

Something more.

One by one, the attackers fell.

Until only the traitor remained.

He staggered backward, breathing hard, his confidence finally cracking.

"You don't get it," he said, voice shaking. "The cult… they're already inside. The palace is already lost."

Selena stepped forward, her dagger steady. "Then you'll tell us everything."

But the traitor only smiled.

A dark, knowing smile.

"You're too late."

Before either of them could react, he bit down hard—

—and collapsed.

"Poison," Adrian muttered, kneeling beside the body.

Selena's chest rose and fell rapidly. "He killed himself."

"No," Adrian said quietly. "He was silenced."

Her blood ran cold.

This wasn't just betrayal.

This was control.

Silence fell over the courtyard.

The bodies. The shadows. The faint glow of the Blood Moon above.

Selena's hands trembled slightly, adrenaline still coursing through her veins.

"He was right about one thing," she said. "This isn't over."

Adrian stood beside her, his presence steady and unyielding. "No. It's only beginning."

For a moment, neither of them moved.

The tension between them lingered—not just from the fight, but from something deeper. Something growing stronger with every battle, every shared danger.

Selena looked at him, really looked this time.

"You didn't hesitate," she said softly. "Back there… you protected me."

Adrian held her gaze. "So did you."

Her heart skipped.

The air between them shifted—charged, fragile, dangerous.

But neither stepped away.

Finally, Selena turned, looking back toward the towering palace walls.

"It's worse than we thought," she said. "The cult isn't just outside."

Adrian followed her gaze. "They're already inside."

The Blood Moon burned above them, brighter now, as if watching. Waiting.

And deep within Selena, her wolf whispered a truth she could no longer ignore—

The real enemy had not yet revealed itself.
