Harry looked at Raven after they stepped out of Gringotts and into the noisy bustle of Diagon Alley. "Raven, what are the Sacred 28?" he asked, eyebrows furrowed with curiosity.
Raven let out a soft sigh as she glanced down the cobbled street. "Harry, what I'm about to tell you, you can't let it go to your head. There's a lot of extreme prejudice between what the wizarding world considers pureblood magical families like the Potters and what they call normal human-born families that have magical abilities."
She gave him a pointed look. "They call them mudbloods. It's a derogatory term that you must never use to refer to other people. It basically means a Muggle-born wizard who can still use magic."
Harry's expression darkened. "You really do face prejudice everywhere you go, don't you?"
"It's everywhere, Harry," Raven said quietly. "That's just real life. Humans can't help but be inherently prejudiced against things they don't understand."
She continued, her tone steady, "Your mother was Muggle-born, and your father was a pureblood. That technically makes you a half-blood — even though the Potters are one of the Sacred 28 families of England."
Raven narrowed her eyes at a passing group of witches in elaborate robes. "Most of the Sacred 28 noble families in England are actually intermarried with Muggles. So most of them don't have any real pure lineage left. Their bloodlines have been diluted for generations."
Her voice tightened. "So no matter how high on their horse they are when they claim they are superior, the fact remains that most of them aren't."
Harry frowned. "So you're saying this Sacred 28 thing is just propaganda they use to treat themselves as superior to Muggle-born wizards?"
Claire, walking just behind them, joined in. "We deal with the same thing in the human world, Harry. Rich people and poor people."
She exhaled and glanced around the street. "You know how some of those wealthy parents come to Applewood's Home for Wayward Children to adopt children? The way they judge the kids is disgusting. They favor some children based on looks or behavior instead of circumstances or trauma."
Claire's voice became firm. "I don't let people like that adopt. I don't want the kids growing up under people who already look down on others."
Harry nodded, his voice low. "I know exactly what you mean, Claire. I've seen how some of those people look at the kids in the orphanage."
"It's the same everywhere, Harry," Raven said, her tone tinged with weariness. "Everyone looks down on somebody else. And the fundamental principle behind that is wrong."
"I didn't realize the wizarding world was full of so much prejudice," Harry muttered.
"You will meet plenty of people who think they are superior because they are purebloods," Raven said. "If they ever give you trouble, you can just tell them you come from the prestigious Potter family one of the Sacred 28."
Harry chuckled. "What about when they bring up my mom?"
Raven's fist rose slightly in front of his face. "That's what your fists are for, Harry."
Harry blinked and took a small step back. "You want me to punch my bullies?"
"Of course. If you beat up your bully, they will stop bothering you."
She looked him over. "You're not some scrawny kid anymore Harry. You've grown up. You won't be at a disadvantage against kids your own size."
Harry raised an eyebrow brow. "What if they bring backup?"
Raven let out a soft laugh. "That's what my fists are for."
Harry laughed with her, his shoulders loosening a little.
Claire exhaled and crossed her arms. "I can't believe I raised you two. I'm going to get letters from Hogwarts about how you're beating up other students."
"You will get letters delivered by owls, complaining about us beating up bullies," Raven said dryly.
Claire gave them both a tired look. "Just don't cause too much trouble. But I've got your back if anyone tries to bully you."
Harry turned to her and smiled. "You're so good to us Claire."
Claire gave him a warm look. "You two have made my life much more interesting. We have magic around our home now — and your snake, Medusa Raven. I haven't seen a mouse in the orphanage in months."
"That's because Medusa seems to be fed by my magical energy and a healthy diet of mice" Raven added, gently adjusting the green snake resting around her neck.
She looked at Harry again. "Anyway, that's enough about the Sacred 28. It was all propaganda created by pureblood wizards years ago."
Harry tilted his head. "How do you know so much about the wizarding world?"
Raven's voice lowered. "I was made to study it by an evil woman named Miranda."
Harry's eyes widened slightly. "You had to study all of this?"
"You have no idea how much I've had to learn."
Claire's gaze sharpened. "Is that why sometimes when I check on you at night, you're not in your room?"
Raven froze mid-step. "Oh, Miss Claire, I didn't realize you were standing there."
"I've been here the whole time," Claire said flatly.
Raven lowered her voice. "Please don't grab me."
Claire sighed, her tone softening. "I know you have your own responsibilities, Raven. Just make sure you stay safe and get enough sleep."
"I always do," Raven replied.
"That's all I ask," Claire said quietly.
