Chapter 16 - Acting like nothing happened

POV Josiane...

Morning felt… unreal.

I stood in front of the mirror, staring at myself.

Same face.

Same eyes.

But everything inside—

Different.

I am the target.

Cain is watching me .

Act normal.

She exhaled slowly.

"…Normal," she whispered.

The campus was loud again.

Students laughing.

Talking.

Living like nothing was wrong.

Josie walked in.

And saw him.

Cain.

He leaned casually against the corridor wall, talking to someone.

Relaxed.

Unbothered.

Like he wasn't—

Watching me .

Her steps slowed for just a second.

Then—

She remembered.

Act normal.

She walked toward him.

Cain noticed her instantly.

"Hey," he said, easy as always. "You disappeared yesterday."

Josie forced a small smile.

"Yeah… wasn't feeling well."

His eyes stayed on her a second longer than usual.

Observing.

Analyzing.

"Better now?" he asked.

She nodded.

"Yeah."

A pause.

"Good," he said.

But his tone was different.

Subtle.

Like he was checking something.

Josie's heart raced.

He's watching.

He knows everything I do.

"See you in class?"Cain asked.

"Yeah," she replied.

Normal.

Casual.

Like nothing had changed.

But everything had.

Later—

Josie sat in class, pretending to write notes.

But her eyes—

Kept drifting.

To Cain.

He wasn't even looking at her.

Talking. Writing. Normal.

But now she knew—

Even when he wasn't looking—

He was watching.

Her phone vibrated slightly.

She froze.

A message.

From Linux.

"Stay calm. Don't react differently."

She swallowed.

Typed back quickly—

" He's acting normal."

Reply came instantly.

"That means we're doing it right."

Her fingers paused.

Then

I don't like this.

A few seconds.

Then—

I know.

But I'm here.

My chest tightened slightly.

Not fear this time.

Something softer.

After classes—

Half the campus started leaving.

Groups forming.

Noise rising.

Josie walked alone.

Slowly.

Thinking.

Until—

She felt it.

That feeling again.

Being watched.

She stopped.

Turned

No one obvious.

Just people passing.

Talking.

Laughing.

But then

Her eyes caught something.

Someone.

Standing a little far.

Watching.

Not Cain.

Not Linux.

Not Kaela.

Someone else.

And the moment their eyes met—

They walked away.

Fast.

Josie's heart started racing.

Her phone buzzed.

Good progress.

Her breath stopped.

Another message.

"Let's see how long you can pretend.

Her hands went cold."

"No…" she whispered.

This wasn't just Cain anymore.

Someone else—

Was watching too.
