Chapter 109 - Chapter 109: The Shadows of Moonfort

Essos, The Disputed Lands

The Disputed Lands sat like a rich, blood-soaked prize at the southwestern heel of Essos. Bound by the Sea of Myr to the north and the infinite expanse of the Summer Sea to the south, its fertile soil and deep veins of ore had made it a charnel house for the Free Cities for centuries.

Tyrosh, Myr, and Lys had spent generations tearing at each other for every acre. Because the borders shifted with the seasons, no one had built permanent stone fortresses. Instead, the landscape was dotted with massive timber keeps and fortified towns. Tyrosh had held the lion's share of these outposts, but with the capital's fall and the Magisters delivered in chains to Aegon, the commanders in the field were now fractured, leaderless, and ripe for the harvest.

As the first light of dawn touched the horizon, a legion of Chainbreakers moved in perfect, rhythmic silence toward the massive gates of Moonfort. The morning mist clung to their armor, making them look like golden ghosts emerging from the earth.

The Strategy of the Sand Table

"Bronn, are you certain your men can breach the inner sanctum?"

Tyrion Lannister stood in the command tent, his mismatched eyes fixed on the Moonfort entrance. He looked pale, the weight of his first true command pressing down on his small shoulders. He hadn't slept in thirty hours; he had spent every minute hunched over the sand-table models Jon had provided, running a thousand iterations of the assault.

"Relax, Halfman," Bronn grunted, sharpening a dagger with practiced ease. "Your front line will draw their eyes. My boys are God-Warriors now—Jon's 'blessing' makes them move like smoke. I'm just jealous I didn't get the treatment myself. Maybe after we hand you this castle, the Prince will see fit to give me a little glow-up too."

Tyrion didn't smile. He watched as the first infantry square reached the killing zone.

"Fire!" a Tyroshi herald screamed from the wooden battlements.

A swarm of arrows hissed through the air, dark against the morning sky. But the Chainbreakers didn't break. They locked their heavy shields into a seamless "turtle" shell, the shafts clattering harmlessly away.

"Mages, open the way!"

The shield wall parted just enough for a dozen pairs of glowing palms to emerge.

BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!

Concentrated fire-magic slammed into the massive oak gates. Each blast punched holes the size of a man's head through the reinforced timber. Before the Tyroshi defenders could even register the magical breach, a wedge of Heavy Armored Knights slammed into the weakened gate, shattering it into splinters.

The Fall of the Fourth Legion

Inside the keep, Walter Zemann, commander of the Tyroshi Fourth Legion, was struggling to wake. He was a man who had grown fat on the labor of thirty thousand slaves and the luxuries of four surrounding plantations. When news of the capital's fall reached him, he simply murdered his superior and declared himself lord of the Moonfort.

He lay amidst a tangle of bed-slaves, the smell of wine and expensive oils heavy in the air.

"Up! Get me my plate!" Zemann roared as the sound of the alarm bells finally pierced his haze. "If those rebels think they can take my keep, they'll find their heads on pikes by noon!"

A frantic pounding came at his door. "Enter!" Zemann shouted, stepping toward the entrance as he buckled his jeweled sword-belt.

The door swung open, but it wasn't a panicked messenger. A wave of iron-scent and fresh blood hit his nostrils.

"The Chainbreakers send their regards," a voice whispered.

Zemann lunged for his blade, but he was underwater. Four men in Fourth Legion uniforms—infiltrators who had scaled the walls in the chaos—swarmed him. One hand clamped over his mouth while the others seized his limbs with the strength of giants.

Thwack. Squelch. Squelch.

The daggers found the gaps in his "masterpiece" Tyroshi armor with surgical precision. Zemann felt the cold steel bloom in his chest, again and again. He tried to scream, but the hand over his mouth was like a vise of stone. He died wondering how his legendary plate had been bypassed so easily, his blood staining the fine Myrish rugs of his bedchamber.

"Target neutralized," the leader whispered. "Burn the armory. Signal the breach. Tell the garrison their commander is feed for the crows."

The Three-Fold Map

Ten minutes later, Tyrion watched as a column of black smoke rose from the rear of Moonfort. The purple flag of the Fourth Legion was hauled down, replaced by the red-and-black of the Dragon.

"The city is ours," Tyrion exhaled, the tension leaving his body in a shuddering wave.

"Move the reserves in!" he commanded the heralds. "I want the weapon caches secured before the mercenaries start looting."

As the town fell into order, Tyrion spread a massive parchment across a low table. It was the Map of the Disputed Lands, now covered in thousands of tiny, precise notes in the Common Tongue.

"You're already planning the next one, aren't you?" Bronn asked, looking at the map with a mixture of awe and fear.

"I have three scenarios for every fortress in this peninsula," Tyrion replied, his quill already moving. "Aegon didn't give me this command to stop at one wooden keep. He gave me this command to give him an empire. Myr is next, Bronn. And I intend to take it before they even realize the Moonfort has fallen."

Bronn looked at the small man and saw, for the first time, a giant. Tyrion wasn't just a Lannister anymore; he was the architect of a new world, and he was writing its history in Tyroshi blood.
