Chapter 16 - Chapter 15: Currents of Greed

The storm did not belong to the shrine alone.

Far from the crashing thunder and rising waters of the Storm Shrine, the effects of Preye's awakening rippled outward—through the rivers, through the mangroves… and into the heart of Opundi City.

Opundi City – The High Council Chambers

The room was quiet.

Too quiet.

Tall carved pillars lined the circular chamber, each one etched with ancient river symbols that predated the city itself. Oil lamps flickered along the walls, casting long shadows over the gathered figures seated around a polished wooden table.

At the head sat Chief Omor, a man known for his calm voice and dangerous patience.

His fingers tapped lightly against the table as he listened to the report being delivered by a nervous messenger kneeling before him.

..the Storm Shrine has been activated, sir, the messenger said, his voice trembling, eyewitness accounts confirm… lightning Ori manifestation.

A murmur spread across the room.

One of the council members, a heavyset man draped in expensive coral beads, leaned forward.

"That is impossible," he snapped. Stormborne powers vanished generations ago.

Another councilor, older and quieter, shook his head.

Not vanished, he corrected, but "Suppressed."

Chief Omor raised a hand.

Silence returned instantly.

Who is the wielder? he asked calmly.

The messenger swallowed.

A former officer, sir, a woman named… Preye.

The name lingered in the air.

Some of the council members exchanged glances.

Others frowned.

But one man smiled.

That man was Chief Pereowei .

"Yes," Pereowei said softly, leaning back in his chair. I remember her.

Chief Omor's eyes shifted toward him.

"You know this girl?"

Pereowei 's smile did not reach his eyes, she was… troublesome.

He folded his hands calmly.

Too honest, too stubborn, the kind who believes rules actually mattered.

A few council members chuckled quietly.

Chief Omor remained expressionless, and now?"

Pereowei 's voice lowered slightly, now she is something else entirely.

The room grew tense.

The older councilor spoke again.

"If the Stormborne power has truly returned, then the balance will shift."

Another added quickly.

"And not in our favor."

Pereowei leaned forward.

Then we control it.

Chief Omor's gaze sharpened.

"Explain."

Pereowei smiled.

We either bring her under our authority…

He paused.

"…or we ensure she never becomes a threat."

Silence followed.

Heavy.

Deliberate.

Chief Omor tapped his fingers once more.

The Order of the Silent Tide has already been deployed.

Pereowei nodded.

"And yet the storm still rages."

That was the problem.

The room felt colder.

"Then we escalate," Pereowei continued, there are… other factions in Opundi City who would be very interested in a power like hers."

The older councilor frowned.

"You would invite chaos into the city?"

Pereowei 's smile returned, "Chaos is already here."

He leaned back again.

We might as well profit from it.

Chief Omor watched him carefully.

Then he spoke.

"Find her."

His voice carried quiet authority.

"And when you do…"

His eyes darkened.

"Make sure she understands who truly controls Opundi City."

The River Shadows' Camp – Deep Mangrove Territory

Unlike the structured order of the Tide Reapers, the River Shadows lived differently.

Their camp was hidden deep within the mangroves, built on wooden platforms suspended above dark, slow-moving water.

Torches burned low.

Voices whispered in the night.

Information flowed like currency.

At the center of the camp sat Lady Seimie, her posture relaxed as she sipped from a carved wooden cup.

Across from her stood one of her informants.

"The storm girl survived the encounter," he reported.

Seimie smiled faintly.

I expected as much.

And Barator?

The informant hesitated, still engaged in battle.

Seimie chuckled softly, that man never knows when to retreat.

She leaned back slightly.

"Tell me," she said, her voice thoughtful, what do you think happens when a storm meets a tide?

The informant remained silent.

Seimie's smile widened.

Exactly.

She stood.

Her cloak shifted slightly with the movement.

This city is about to become very interesting.

She began walking toward the edge of the platform.

Prepare the watchers, she added, I want eyes on that girl at all times."

The informant nodded.

And if we find her first?

Seimie paused.

Then glanced over her shoulder, we don't capture her, her eyes gleamed.

"We recruit her."

A Small Hut Near the Outer Riverbanks

Far from politics and power struggles, life continued in quieter corners of the city.

Inside a modest wooden hut, a young woman sat near the window, staring out at the restless river.

Her name was Denyefa.

Timi's younger sister.

She clutched a small pendant tightly in her hand.

The same one Timi had given her before leaving.

Her brow furrowed slightly.

"The river feels wrong tonight," she murmured.

The water outside rippled strangely.

Unnaturally.

Denyefa closed her eyes.

For a moment, she listened.

Not with her ears.

But with something deeper.

A faint glow flickered around her fingers.

Soft.

Barely visible.

Then It vanished.

Denyefa's eyes snapped open.

"Timi."

Something wasn't right.

Back at the Storm Shrine

The storm had grown worse.

The lagoon roared violently as water spiraled around the ruins.

At the center of it all stood Preye.

Lightning blazed around her body.

Wind whipped through the broken pillars.

Rain slashed sideways across the battlefield.

Across from her, Barator stood with his blade raised.

The whirlpool behind him had grown massive.

Water surged upward, threatening to swallow the shrine whole.

If I cannot control the storm, Barator said calmly, "then I will bury it."

Preye stared at the rising waters.

Then she smiled.

"You talk too much."

Lightning exploded beneath her feet.

She charged forward.

Barator moved at the same time.

Their powers collided once more.

Storm and tide.

Lightning and water.

Chaos and control.

The final clash had begun.

But far beyond the shrine, forces were already moving.

Watching.

Waiting.

Because this battle was no longer just about survival.

It was about power.

Control.

And the beginning of something far greater than any of them had imagined.

And in the heart of it all stood one girl…

Who had finally stopped asking for permission. 🌟
