Chapter 28 - Chapter 27: After The Sky Fell

The storm ended too cleanly.

That was what unsettled everyone.

Not the destruction, Opundi City had seen chaos before, fires could be put out, broken wood could be replaced, flooded streets would drain.

But this?

This felt like something had tested the city,

Measured it,

And left… disappointed.

For a long time, no one spoke.

People stood in the streets, soaked, shaken, staring at a sky that looked too normal—as if it hadn't just torn open.

Vendors clutched broken stalls.

Boatmen checked ropes that had snapped under invisible pressure.

Even the gangs,

The ones who thrived on disorder,

Stayed quiet, because they all felt it.

Something had looked at them.

And decided they weren't important enough.

The Current's base survived, barely.

Half the upper structure had collapsed, one wall leaned dangerously, the roof had a jagged hole where rain still dripped steadily onto the floor.

Timi stood in the middle of it, hands on his head, we just fixed this place.

Nimi walked past him without sympathy.

"It builds character."

Timi stared at her, "I don't want character, I want a roof."

Preye didn't respond.

She stood near the open wall, looking out at the city.

Still,

Silent,

Processing.

Kuro approached her, that was not an attack.

Preye nodded slowly.

"No."

Her voice was quieter than usual, it was a message.

Sotonye leaned against a broken beam, arms crossed, then we need to decide something."

Everyone turned.

"Are we still playing in Opundi City, his eyes flicked toward Preye,

"…or has the game changed?"

The question lingered.

Heavy.

Because the answer would decide everything.

Preye turned,

Not slowly,

Not hesitantly,

But with clarity.

"We finish what we started."

Her voice was stronger and certain.

Timi blinked, even after… all that?"

Preye met his gaze

"Especially after that."

She walked back to the table—what was left of it—and placed both hands on it.

"We broke their structure."

She looked at Nimi,

"The collectors."

Nimi nodded,

"Gone."

To Boma,

"The docks."

Boma smirked slightly,

"Half of them are already working with us the other half… will soon."

"And the Ledger?"

Sotonye answered this time,

"Chaos."

A pause,

"No one trusts it anymore."

Preye straightened, then we don't wait.

Timi raised his hand, I'm scared to ask, but what now?"

Preye's eyes sharpened, we take the center.

Silence.

Nimi frowned,

"…The Council?"

Preye nodded.

Timi choked,

"Oh, that's—no—that's not small."

Boma let out a low whistle, that's direct.

Sotonye smiled faintly, that's dangerous.

Preye didn't flinch, that's necessary.

The Council of Opundi...

At the heart of the city,

Above the noise,

Above the chaos,

Sat the Council.

They didn't control everything,

But they allowed everything.

They approved routes.

Sanctioned trade,

Protected certain powers,

While pretending neutrality.

And now,

They were exposed.

The Council Chamber....

The room was large,

Quiet,

Polished,

Untouched by the storm,

Which made it worse.

Six figures sat around a long table.

Each one powerful,

Each one careful.

"…This cannot continue," one said.

"The Current has destabilized too much."

Another leaned forward.

"And the storm?"

Silence.

"…We do not speak of that," a third said quietly.

The doors opened,

Madam Ado Enters,

Without announcement.

Without permission.

She walks in calmly,

Composed,

Unbothered.,

The council members stiffened.

"You don't have the authority—"

"I have influence," she replied smoothly.

"And right now, that matters more."

She walked to the center.

Looked at each of them,

"You're losing control."

No one denied it.

"The Current is not your problem," she continued.

"The storm is."

One of them scoffed, they are the same."

Madam Ado's smile was thin,

"No."

A pause.

They are about to become something worse.

Back at the Base, Preye pointed to the center of the map.

"The Council doesn't fight."

Nimi nodded, they manipulate.

"Then we remove their leverage."

Sotonye leaned forward, and how do you plan to do that?

Preye smiled, by exposing them.

"Not secrets," she continued, they expect that.

She tapped the table we expose their dependence.

Boma frowned, explain.

Preye's voice dropped slightly, they rely on controlled chaos.

Smugglers,

Collectors,

Enforcers.

She looked at them, we already broke that.

Nimi's eyes widened slightly, so they have nothing left to stabilize the city.

Sotonye smiled, which means they'll have to act."

Preye nodded, and when they do…"

Her eyes hardened,

…we control how they fall.....

They didn't attack,

They revealed.

Information spread through the city.

Not rumors,

Not whispers,

Facts.....

"The Council approved illegal routes."

"They protected debt enforcers."

"They benefited from the Ledger."

People began to connect the dots.

Anger followed.

Crowds gathered,

Voices rose,

Questions turned into accusations.

"Where were they during the storm?"

"Why didn't they protect us?"

"Who do they actually serve?"

The Council.....

For the first time,

Lost control of perception.

Timi's Comments,

"…So let me get this straight," he said, watching the chaos unfold, we didn't fight them?

"No."

We just made everyone else hate them.?

Preye nodded, yes.

Timi blinked,

"…That's actually terrifying."

Inside the Council chamber,

Voices raised,

Arguments broke out,

Blame shifted,

"They've turned the people—"

"You allowed this—"

"No, you did—"

Control fractured.

Authority weakened.

Back at the base....

People started arriving,

Not fighters,

Not criminals,

But citizens,

Merchants,

Workers,

Boatmen.

They didn't come to fight,

They came to ask,

To join,

To align.

Boma looked at the growing crowd, this is new.

Nimi smirked, they're choosing.

Sotonye added quietly,

"Just like you said they would."

Preye Steps Forward,

She walked out to meet them.

No fear,

No hesitation.

The crowd quieted.

"Are you Stormborne?" someone asked.

Preye didn't hide.

Didn't deflect.

"Yes."

A pause,

Then,

"What happens now?"

Preye looked at them, at the city behind them, and at the broken systems.

The shifting power.

Her voice was clear and strong.

"We rebuild."

But as the crowd began to grow,

As influence shifted,

As the Current became more than just a name,

Sotonye stepped closer to Preye.

His voice low, urgent.

"…We have a problem."

Preye didn't look at him.

"What kind?"

Sotonye's eyes darkened.

"The kind that doesn't belong to this city."

A pause.

"He's not gone.

Lightning flickered faintly in Preye's hand.

"…Good.

Her voice dropped slightly, because next time…"

Her eyes sharpened.

"I won't be reacting."

And somewhere beyond the sky that had already broken once—

Something stirred again,

Because the storm had survived the test.

And now,

It was about to be pushed further. 🌟
