One afternoon, Mwiya gathered his family outside the main hut.
"I must travel to the city," he said.
Nalubamba looked surprised.
"To **Lusaka?" she asked.
"Yes," Mwiya replied. "There is work waiting for me there. I may stay for several weeks."
Nalubamba nodded slowly.
Traveling for work was not unusual.
But something about leaving now made her uneasy.
Before leaving, Mwiya spoke to MaSimukonda.
"Mother, please make yourself comfortable here. My wife will continue taking care of you."
MaSimukonda smiled warmly.
"Do not worry, my son. Your home is safe."
Early the next morning, Mwiya left the village.
His footsteps disappeared along the dusty road.
Nalubamba watched him until he was gone.
She did not yet know that his absence would change everything.
