Chapter 18 - Ch 18- Twin Sisters

Subaru stood before the mansion, gazing up at the magnificent building with awe filling her eyes. Her voice carried undisguised excitement.

"Wow! It's so big! It's like a palace, no... it should be called a mansion!" Her gaze moved over every detail of the architecture, from the carved window frames to the towering spires. Everything about it felt new and fascinating to her.

Emilia stood beside her with her head tilted slightly, a hint of confusion in her violet eyes. "...Subaru, why are you so surprised?"

Carlisle stood a little behind them with his arms crossed, a faint smile on his lips as he watched the girl's joyful reaction, but he said nothing.

Subaru heard Emilia's question and turned her head, her face still flushed with excitement.

"Because in my hometown, houses of this size are usually only found in big cities, and most of them are used as... well, formal venues, like large museums or exhibition centers."

Her voice was filled with emotion.

"Ordinary people could never live in a place like this, let alone own it."

Emilia blinked, seemingly puzzled by Subaru's explanation.

It was already noon the next day, and sunlight spread across the exterior walls of the mansion, casting a faint golden glow. After a night of travel, the group had finally reached their destination. That morning, Carlisle had briefly introduced Roswaal to Subaru. He was Emilia's supporter, the Chief Court Mage of the Kingdom of Lugunica, and also a Border Count. However, Subaru did not have much understanding of these titles.

"The guest's reaction is truly exaggerated. Could it be that she comes from some remote backwater?"

A cold voice suddenly came from the side. Subaru froze for a moment and then turned to look. Not far away stood a girl wearing a maid uniform. She had shoulder length pink hair, large pink eyes, and peach colored lips. Her slightly delicate facial features gave her an extremely cute appearance.

"That's a terrible thing to say... and who are you?"

"She has such a cute face, but her way of speaking is far too sharp," Subaru muttered softly while looking at the girl, feeling both confused and slightly displeased.

The girl, Ram, tilted her chin slightly, and a trace of condescension appeared in her eyes.

"Ram is merely stating the truth. After all, the guest looks like someone who has never seen the world. Truly idiotic."

Subaru was momentarily choked by those words, and a blush of embarrassment rose to her face. She opened her mouth, preparing to argue back, but Carlisle's voice interrupted her.

"Are you Roswaal's maid? If possible, could you please be a little more polite to Subaru?"

Ram shifted her gaze toward Carlisle. Her expression remained cold, but her tone softened slightly.

"Ram understands, Knight."

Seeing this, Subaru immediately ran to Carlisle's side and put on an aggrieved expression.

"Waaah... Carlisle, I knew you were the best! Exactly! For my impression of maids in another world to be ruined at first sight is just too much!"

Ram bowed her head slightly and spoke in a flat tone.

"I apologize, guest. Please forgive Ram."

However, even though she verbally apologized, there was not a trace of regret on her face. Instead, a faint and almost imperceptible smile appeared, an expression that seemed to say, "I know I was wrong, but I will probably do it again next time."

Carlisle shook his head helplessly. He gently patted Subaru's shoulder.

"Alright, please don't take it to heart."

Subaru pouted. Although she still felt a little unhappy, she did not say anything else. She secretly glanced at Ram and muttered to herself.

"What a strange person... but she is quite cute."

The three followed Ram into the mansion, and the spacious hall soon came into view. Exquisite crystal chandeliers hung from the tall ceiling, their light illuminating the delicate bas relief carvings embedded in the walls and reflecting a soft glow. The carpet beneath their feet was soft and thick. Subaru's gaze wandered everywhere, her heart filled with amazement. However, when she noticed Ram walking ahead of them, she forcibly swallowed the exclamation that had reached her lips and merely pursed her lips in silence.

At that moment, a blue figure slowly appeared from the other end of the corridor. Everyone's attention was drawn toward her. It was another girl wearing a maid uniform. Her hair and eyes, like Carlisle's, were sky blue. The girl's face was as delicate as a porcelain doll, with peach colored lips beneath large eyes. Her entire presence gave off a cool yet cute atmosphere. Her shoulder length hair neatly framed her cheeks, making her look obedient and tidy.

Subaru carefully observed her and was surprised to discover that this girl's face was almost ninety percent identical to Ram's, except their temperaments were completely different.

"Sister, Emilia-sama, welcome back." The girl bowed slightly, her voice cool yet respectful.

Then her gaze turned toward Carlisle, and she gave a slight nod.

"This must be Sir Carlisle, whom Roswaal-sama mentioned, correct? It is a pleasure to meet you. I am Rem, a maid of this mansion. Thank you for traveling all this way. If you have any needs, please feel free to give your orders."

Although her tone was polite, there was a faint sense of distance in it.

Next, Rem's gaze fell upon Subaru, and a trace of confusion appeared in her eyes.

"This guest is...?"

Emilia smiled and explained.

"Rem, this is Subaru. She is my benefactor. I wanted to bring her to see Roswaal-sama and ask if he could help her in any way."

Subaru looked at Rem curiously and thought to herself.

"Another classic maid image from another world. But is she really the sister of that rude pink haired maid? Her voice just feels so cold."

Carlisle smiled faintly and spoke in a humble tone.

"Hello, it is a pleasure to meet you. Just call me Carlisle."

Rem gently shook her head, her voice remaining calm.

"Rem is only a maid. Sir Carlisle does not need to be so polite."

Her attitude was respectful, but there was undeniable firmness in it, and her tone subtly reminded them of the difference in their social positions. Seeing this, Carlisle said nothing further and simply nodded in understanding.

"Um... you don't have to call me 'guest' either. Just call me Subaru." Subaru scratched her head in embarrassment. She was not used to being addressed as "guest." It always felt distant.

Ram stood to the side with her arms crossed and her chin slightly raised.

"So that is the case. Is that your request, guest? Ram understands."

Rem blinked and nodded without expression, her voice cool but with a faint hint of agreement.

"Is that so... Rem understands as well. Sister, Sister, is this silly looking person, who seems like a rich young lady, actually Emilia-sama's benefactor?"

"Rem, Rem, this silly looking person is indeed Emilia-sama's benefactor."

"I only said you didn't need to call me 'guest,' right? You two are far too rude."

"Although the guest is quite cute, that clueless expression truly does not inspire any sense of respect."

"Rem thinks so as well. The guest's inexperienced demeanor indeed appears rather foolish. Not even understanding basic etiquette. It is truly baffling."

"How mean..."

Subaru's voice was filled with grievance, and her face was full of frustration. She had only wanted to be friendly, but such an evaluation was very difficult for her to accept.

Carlisle stood nearby and watched the sisters' exchange, which resembled a comedy performance. He could not help but sigh softly. He felt somewhat helpless, but more than that he felt sympathy for Subaru. He also thought the sisters' sharp remarks were a little excessive.

"Please, that is enough."

"Subaru helped me greatly in the Royal Capital, and she is also Emilia's benefactor. Your rudeness is truly inappropriate."

Ram shrugged and returned to a professional expression.

"Ram understands, Sir Carlisle."

Rem lowered her head slightly, her tone calm.

"Rem understands as well, Sir Carlisle."

Subaru noticed that although their attitudes were still somewhat cold, they at least stopped verbally attacking her, and she felt slightly relieved. She muttered softly.

"Seriously, these sisters have such terrible personalities... even though they are so cute."

T/N- I was going to gender bender Roswaal too but nvm.
