Cherreads

Chapter 8 - Chapter 8 — Risk and Revelation

The night air in Jinlu was cooler than usual, carrying the faint scent of cherry blossoms from the mansion gardens. Meilin Huang moved quietly, her steps light and deliberate, glancing over her shoulder to ensure no one watched. The mansion was asleep, save for the occasional flicker of a lantern in the hallways.

The portal shimmered faintly behind the cherry trees, a golden veil pulsing with life. It had always called to her, responding to her desperation and desire to help her family in Qingshi. Tonight, the stakes felt higher — her father had fallen ill, her mother exhausted, and Huang Wei had scraped his knee while playing outside.

Meilin took a deep breath and stepped through. The world shifted instantly. The narrow cobblestones of Qingshi greeted her, and the familiar smells of cooking fires and laundry soot filled her senses. Relief washed over her, but it was short-lived.

She had only been back for a few minutes when a soft knock at her apartment door startled her. "Who's there?" she whispered.

Her mother opened the door, concern in her eyes. "Meilin, I didn't expect you back so soon. Are you all right?"

Meilin smiled faintly, hiding the exhaustion in her eyes. "I'm fine. Just… wanted to make sure you all were comfortable." She set down the small pouch of coins she had taken from the Liang mansion. Her heart tightened at the thought of taking from a family that wasn't hers — yet, every coin meant her real family would be safer tonight.

Back in Jinlu, Kael Liang was not idle. He had noticed subtle changes in Meilin: a faint weariness in her expression, a hint of distraction during lessons, and the small hesitations when she returned from walks.

During dinner at the mansion, Kael approached the subject indirectly.

"Meilin," he said, calm but firm, "you seem… tired lately. Your focus drifts at the most inconvenient times."

Meilin stiffened, carefully hiding the truth. "I… have much on my mind," she murmured. "Adjusting to university life is… different from the mansion."

Kael's gaze did not waver. "Perhaps. But distraction can be costly. One must always maintain composure."

She nodded silently, feeling both the weight of his scrutiny and the subtle thrill that came with his attention. Kael was testing her — but how far?

The next day, Meilin returned to campus for classes. Ren Kai spotted her in the JIU gardens, leaning against a cherry tree.

"Missed me?" he teased, grinning. "You look like you're carrying the world on your shoulders."

Meilin laughed softly, trying to mask the tension she felt from the previous night.

"It's… nothing," she said.

Ren Kai's eyes twinkled knowingly.

"Uh-huh. You're hiding something. But that's okay — secrets make life interesting." He stepped closer, lowering his voice. "Just don't forget, you've got friends here. You don't have to carry it all alone."

Meilin's pulse quickened. Ren Kai's charm was effortless and warm, a stark contrast to Kael's intense, cold presence. And yet, both men occupied her mind in ways she couldn't ignore.

That evening, she stood by the portal again, her hand brushing the shimmering golden light. She hesitated — the longer she traveled, the greater the risk of someone noticing, the greater the moral weight of taking what wasn't hers.

Her father's worried face flashed before her eyes. Her mother's quiet strength. Her brother's laughter. She could not stop. Not yet.

Stepping through, she felt the familiar rush of motion as the world shifted. Qingshi welcomed her, and for a few precious moments, her heart was at ease.

But deep in Jinlu, Kael's mind was sharp and calculating. He would wait. Observe. Test. And when the time came, he would confront Meilin — not just about her actions, but the truths she had been hiding from him, from everyone.

Two worlds. Two men. One girl navigating a life that demanded secrecy, courage, and careful choices.

And Meilin Huang realized: she was no longer just surviving. She was learning to live — balancing love, duty, and the impossible pull of two very different worlds.
