Chapter 23 - Chapter 23: The Advanced Unit

The silence did not last long.

A heavy, rhythmic sound echoed from beyond the broken walls—slow, deliberate, and impossibly steady. Each step felt like a hammer striking the ground, sending subtle vibrations through the floor beneath them.

Nate tightened his grip on the piece of metal in his hand.

"That's not normal," he said.

Lia shook her head slightly, her expression tense. "No… that's not a drone, and it's not a standard unit either."

Jana didn't speak at first.

Her eyes were fixed on the entrance, her breathing uneven again—but this time, it wasn't just fear.

It was recognition.

"It's here," she whispered.

The Arrival

A shadow filled the doorway.

Then—

It stepped inside.

The Advanced Unit was unlike anything they had seen before.

Taller than any guard, its body was reinforced with dark metallic plating that absorbed light instead of reflecting it. Its movements were slow, precise, almost… calculated. A faint glow pulsed beneath the armor, like energy circulating through something that was not entirely mechanical.

Its eyes—or whatever replaced them—burned with a dim, cold light.

It didn't rush.

It didn't react.

It simply observed.

"Target confirmed," it said in a low, distorted voice.

Nate felt a chill run down his spine.

"That thing… talks."

Lia stepped slightly to the side, analyzing its stance. "It's not just a machine. It's adaptive."

Jana's voice came out barely above a whisper.

"They were the final stage… the ones who don't lose control."

No Weakness

The unit raised one arm slowly.

A pulse of energy formed along its forearm, humming louder with each passing second.

"Move!" Lia shouted.

The blast came instantly.

A wave of force tore through the room, shattering what remained of the walls and sending debris flying in every direction.

Nate grabbed Jana and pulled her down just in time as the shockwave passed over them.

Dust filled the air.

Silence followed.

Then—

The sound of footsteps again.

Steady.

Unstoppable.

"It didn't even hesitate," Nate muttered.

Lia coughed lightly, pushing herself up. "That attack… it wasn't random. It calculated our positions."

Jana stood slowly, her eyes locked on the unit.

"It learns," she said.

The First Clash

Nate didn't wait.

He charged forward.

"Stay behind me!" he shouted.

The unit didn't move until the last second.

Then—

It reacted.

Faster than anything they had faced before.

Its arm intercepted Nate's strike mid-motion, stopping him completely. The force behind the block sent a shock through Nate's entire body.

"What…?" Nate gritted his teeth.

The unit tilted its head slightly.

"Insufficient strength."

Then it pushed.

Nate was thrown backward, crashing into the wall behind him.

"Nate!" Jana shouted.

The Breaking Point

Lia moved quickly, throwing a sharp piece of metal toward the unit's head.

The unit caught it mid-air.

Without even looking.

Then crushed it.

"…Okay," Lia said under her breath. "That's a problem."

Jana stepped forward.

"No," she said. "There has to be a weakness."

The unit turned toward her.

"Secondary subject identified."

Jana froze.

Her breath caught.

Then—

Her body tensed again.

The trigger.

Control Takes Over Again

Her eyes flickered.

The same cold emptiness returned.

"Command accepted," she said.

Nate forced himself up.

"No… not again…"

Jana turned.

But this time—

She didn't hesitate.

She attacked.

Nate vs Jana

Her speed was faster than before.

Sharper.

More precise.

Nate barely had time to react as her blade cut through the air toward him.

He blocked, but the force pushed him back.

"Jana, stop!" he shouted.

No response.

Her movements were flawless—like a machine executing perfect commands.

Lia tried to intervene, but the Advanced Unit stepped in her path, blocking her completely.

"You will not interfere," it said.

A Desperate Fight

Nate dodged another strike, his breathing heavy.

He didn't want to fight her.

But he had no choice.

"Jana… please…"

For a moment—

Just a moment—

Her hand slowed.

But then the control surged again.

She attacked even harder.

Something Awakens

Nate closed his eyes for a split second.

Not in defeat.

But in focus.

Everything slowed.

The sounds around him faded.

The movement.

The fear.

The chaos.

All of it—

Quiet.

And then—

Something inside him shifted.

A New Strength

When he opened his eyes again—

Everything was clearer.

Sharper.

He moved.

This time—

Faster.

He caught Jana's wrist mid-strike.

Her eyes widened slightly.

For the first time—

She was surprised.

"Nate…" she whispered.

Breaking Through

He didn't let go.

"You're still here," he said. "I know you are."

Her hand trembled.

The blade slipped slightly.

The control—

Was cracking.

Lia vs The Unit

Behind them, Lia was still fighting.

But she was losing ground.

The Advanced Unit adapted to every move she made.

"You're learning too fast…" she muttered.

The unit stepped forward.

"Adaptation complete."

The Turning Point

Nate pulled Jana closer.

"You choose," he said. "Not them."

Her eyes shook.

Her breathing broke.

And then—

She screamed.

Freedom… for Now

The control shattered.

Jana collapsed into Nate's arms.

"I… I'm back…" she whispered weakly.

Nate held her tightly.

"I know."

The Real Enemy

But the fight wasn't over.

The Advanced Unit turned toward them again.

This time—

With full focus.

"Primary threats confirmed."

It raised its arm.

Energy surged again.

Stronger than before.

Lia looked at Nate.

"If that hits us… we're done."

The Cliffhanger

Nate stood.

Slowly.

His eyes steady.

His body ready.

"Then we don't let it fire," he said.

The unit released the attack—

And the world exploded into light.
