Chapter 36 - Chapter 36: The First Threat

The silence didn't last.

It never did.

Nate — The Ruins

Nate stood still in the broken landscape, eyes fixed on the sky above where those massive shapes moved slowly between layers of light. They hadn't attacked. They hadn't approached.

But they hadn't left either.

They were waiting.

Observing.

Measuring.

"…Then come closer," Nate muttered.

As if responding—

The hum around him deepened.

Low.

Heavy.

Alive.

The ground beneath his feet vibrated faintly, cracks spreading slowly outward like something beneath the surface had just awakened.

Nate's stance shifted instantly.

Ready.

The First Sign

A shadow passed over him.

Fast.

Too fast to track clearly.

He turned—

Nothing.

But the feeling was there now.

Closer.

Much closer.

Instinct

His body moved before thought.

He stepped back sharply—

And something tore through the space where he had just been standing.

Impact

The ground exploded.

Fragments of stone shot outward as a deep claw mark carved into the surface, precise and violent. Dust rose into the air, distorting visibility.

Nate narrowed his eyes.

"…So you do attack."

The Enemy Revealed

It emerged slowly from the distortion.

Not fully visible at first.

Like it was phasing between states.

Then—

It stabilized.

Not Human

Tall.

Lean.

Its body looked partially constructed—sections of solid form mixed with shifting, unstable energy. Its limbs were elongated, ending in blade-like extensions that shimmered between physical and intangible.

Its face—

Didn't exist.

Only a smooth surface with a faint glow where eyes should have been.

Classification

"Guardian Unit," a distorted voice echoed faintly through the air.

"Assigned to containment."

Nate exhaled slowly.

"…Great. A watchdog."

No Delay

It moved again.

Instant.

Violent.

Clash

Nate reacted just in time.

He blocked—

But the force pushed him back several meters, his boots dragging across the cracked ground as he absorbed the impact.

"…Stronger than the Core units," he muttered.

Adaptation Begins

The Guardian didn't pause.

Didn't hesitate.

It attacked again.

Faster this time.

Precision

Nate dodged left—

Countered—

Struck—

Partial Contact

His attack connected—

But passed through part of the Guardian's body like it wasn't fully there.

Realization

"…Phase shifting," Nate said.

That explained it.

Part solid.

Part untouchable.

The Pressure Builds

The Guardian's movements accelerated.

Each strike sharper.

More precise.

It was learning.

Adapting.

Meanwhile — Jana

The white corridor stretched endlessly.

Too clean.

Too perfect.

Too controlled.

Jana walked slowly, her steps echoing faintly as she scanned every detail. Nothing here felt natural. Every surface, every light, every angle—it all felt designed.

Not for comfort.

For control.

The Voice Returns

"You are adjusting quickly," the man's voice said.

Jana didn't stop walking.

"I don't have a choice."

The Test Revealed

"You always have a choice," he replied.

"Even now."

The Shift

The corridor changed.

Walls moved.

Space restructured.

Then—

Doors appeared.

Dozens of them.

Lining both sides.

The Challenge

"Each path leads to a different outcome," he said.

"Some lead forward."

"Some lead to failure."

Jana Stops

"…And the right one?"

"Does not exist."

Back to Nate — Escalation

The Guardian's blade sliced through the air—

Nate barely avoided it, the edge grazing his shoulder and tearing through fabric like it wasn't even there.

He stepped back, breathing steady but focused.

"…Alright," he said quietly.

"No more testing."

Power Awakens

Energy surged again.

Stronger.

More controlled than ever before.

Control Attempt

This time—

Nate didn't just react.

He pushed.

Space Distorts

The area around the Guardian flickered.

Its form destabilized.

For a split second—

It became fully solid.

Opportunity

Nate moved instantly.

Direct Hit

His strike landed clean.

Impact

The Guardian was thrown back violently, crashing into a distant structure and shattering it on impact.

Jana's Decision

She stood in front of the doors.

Dozens of choices.

No clear answer.

No correct path.

"…Then I'll make one," she said.

Breaking the Rules

Instead of choosing—

She stepped forward.

Directly into the wall.

Shock

The space glitched violently.

The system reacted.

"Invalid action detected."

Resistance

"I'm not choosing your options," Jana said.

"I'll make my own."

Back to Nate — Phase Two

The Guardian rose again.

Damaged.

But not defeated.

Its form shifted.

More stable now.

More dangerous.

Evolution

"Adaptive level increased," the distorted voice echoed.

Final Exchange

Nate stepped forward.

Calm.

Focused.

"Good," he said.

"Now it's a real fight."

Jana Breaks Through

The wall shattered.

Light burst through.

The Reaction

The man's voice paused.

For the first time—

He didn't respond immediately.

"…Unexpected."

Final Lines

Nate charged.

Jana stepped into the unknown.

And somewhere—

The system began to lose control.
