Chapter 6 - Chapter 6 — The First Judgment

Thursday—the day Aurelia had been waiting for.

The day she would prove herself.

Standing outside the towering glass building, Aurelia looked up at the bold letters engraved across it:

The Montclair Group.

The place that could either open doors… or close them completely.

She adjusted her blazer, inhaled deeply, and whispered,

"Calm down. You can do this."

Then she stepped inside.

The lobby was vast, polished, and intimidatingly quiet. People moved with purpose, each step echoing professionalism.

Near the entrance stood a girl wearing a volunteer ID badge.

Aurelia approached her.

"Hello, I'm here for the interview."

The girl smiled politely.

"Good morning. Your name, please?"

"Aurelia Vale."

After verifying her details and confirmation mail, the girl nodded.

"You're on time. Please follow me."

They headed toward the elevator and reached the second floor, where the interviews were being conducted.

Aurelia had arrived early—almost twenty minutes before time.

Better early than uncertain.

She sat quietly, her hands resting on her file, her eyes occasionally glancing at the closed door.

At exactly 10:00 a.m.

The door opened.

"Miss Aurelia Vale."

She stood immediately.

"Yes, I'm here."

"You may enter."

Aurelia walked in—calm on the outside, focused on the inside.

Three interviewers sat across the table:

Mr. Flores

Miss Perez

Mrs. Gracia

Their names were engraved on sleek golden plates.

"Good morning," Aurelia greeted.

"Good morning. Please have a seat."

She sat down, back straight, hands composed—but not stiff.

Round 1 — The Interview

Mr. Flores leaned forward slightly.

"Tell us about yourself."

Aurelia nodded once, steady.

"I recently passed the California Bar Exam, with a primary focus on corporate and civil law. What drives me is not just learning the law, but understanding how it works in real situations—how arguments are built, challenged, and defended. I may be at the beginning of my career, but I'm someone who adapts quickly and learns with intention."

Miss Perez glanced at her resume, then looked up.

"Why the Montclair Group?"

Aurelia paused for a fraction of a second—just enough to choose clarity over haste.

"Because of the way your firm approaches complexity. It's not just about winning cases, it's about how strategically they're handled. That level of precision is something I want to learn from—and contribute to over time."

Mrs. Gracia observed her carefully.

"How do you handle pressure?"

Aurelia's fingers lightly interlocked.

"I acknowledge it first. Then I simplify the situation—facts, priorities, and possible outcomes. Once I have clarity, I focus on execution. That helps me stay controlled even under pressure."

Mr. Flores exchanged a quick glance with the others before sliding a file slightly forward.

"Let's say you're handling a case, and midway you discover a detail that weakens your argument. What would you do?"

Aurelia leaned forward slightly, eyes focused—not rushed.

She took a brief pause.

"I would reassess immediately. If a point weakens, I don't defend it out of ego—I shift to stronger arguments and prepare for how the opposition might use that gap. Adaptability matters more than rigidity in a case."

There was a subtle shift in the room.

Miss Perez tilted her head.

"And if your client insists on continuing with the weaker argument?"

Aurelia met her gaze.

"I would advise against it clearly and professionally. But if they still insist, I would ensure they fully understand the risks before proceeding. My responsibility is to guide them with clarity, not just agree."

Mrs. Gracia leaned back slightly.

"Where do you see yourself in five years?"

Aurelia allowed a small, confident smile.

"In a position where I've earned responsibility through performance. I want to be trusted with decisions that matter—not because of time spent, but because of the value I bring."

A brief silence followed.

Not uncomfortable.

Measured.

Professional.

After approximately 30 minutes, the interview came to an end.

"Miss Vale," Mrs. Gracia said, closing the file, "thank you for your cooperation."

Mr. Flores added,

"We will inform you if you are selected. All the best."

"Thank you," Aurelia replied.

At 11:00 a.m., Aurelia stepped out of the room.

The moment the door closed—

she exhaled.

A slow, satisfied smile formed.

She had given it her best—not perfection, but honesty and clarity.

As she walked out of the building, two things now awaited her:

The Blackwood JLE interview.

And the Montclair Group's decision.

At this moment…

her life stood at the edge of change.

Waiting.

For its next verdict.
