Chapter 33 - Chapter 33: The Ancestral Tomb

The deeper one went into the Dragon Bones, the less the dungeon resembled a natural formation. It became a womb of stone and fire, a place where the laws of physics bowed to the ancient, sleeping will of the dead god.

Kael dragged himself through a tunnel of jagged obsidian, his nails cracking against the glass-like floor. His left arm hung uselessly at his side, the bone shattered from Sarae's slap. His chest heaved with wet, rattling breaths.

He hadn't just lost. He had been discarded.

The memory of Sarae's face—bored, indifferent, looking at Kael as if he were a stain on a shirt—burned hotter than the lava rivers nearby.

He didn't even kill me personally, Kael thought, a twisted laugh bubbling in his throat. He just left me to die. Like a rat.

SYSTEM NOTIFICATION

HOST CONDITION: CRITICAL.

REGENERATION SPEED: 2% PER HOUR.

DIAGNOSIS: INTERNAL HEMORRHAGING. MANA EXHAUSTION.

SUGGESTION: IMMEDIATE CONSUMPTION REQUIRED.

Kael collapsed behind a formation of cooling basalt. He needed food. He needed mana. But more than that, he needed to understand.

"System," Kael rasped, his voice echoing in the empty tunnel. "The gap... why is it so big?"

ANALYSIS: TARGET [SARAE HART] POSSESSES THE [AGELESS PHYSIQUE].THE PHYSIQUE IS NOT MERELY REGENERATION. IT IS A CONCEPT OF "PERFECTION."HIS MANA IS DENSER. HIS CELLS ARE EFFICIENT. HIS SOUL IS SYNCHRONIZED WITH THE WORLD LAWS.HOST IS CURRENTLY A "MONGREL." A MIXTURE OF CONFLICTING ENERGIES.

"Mongrel," Kael repeated. The word tasted like ash.

He thought of his family. The trio of brothers.

Michael, the responsible one, who grabbed his siblings and ran, only to fail. Sarae, the golden child, taken and forged into a god, cold and distant. And Kael. The one left behind. The broken tool.

They were a fractured triad. Bound by blood, severed by fate. If they ever stood in a room together again, it wouldn't be a reunion. It would be a collision of incompatible forces.

"If I am the Hybrid," Kael whispered, his eyes glowing gold in the dark, "then I need to stop trying to be a warrior. I need to be a predator."

SYSTEM UPDATEMENTAL STATE: RESOLVED.

CLASS TRAIT [DEVOURER] EVOLVING...

NEW PASSIVE UNLOCKED: [PREDATORY ADAPTATION]

EFFECT: THE MORE CRITICAL THE HOST'S CONDITION, THE FASTER THE ABSORPTION RATE OF SURROUNDING MANA.

Kael felt the air thicken. The ambient heat of the dungeon, which had been agonizing before, now felt like a warm soup. He opened his mouth and inhaled.

Whoosh.

The mana in the air rushed into him. It wasn't enough to heal him instantly, but it numbed the pain. It sharpened his senses.

He wasn't alone.

Skritch. Skritch.

The sound came from the ceiling above.

Kael didn't look up. He played dead. He slowed his heart rate, dimmed his mana signature, and lay perfectly still in the shadows.

SYSTEM SCANENTITY: [ABYSSAL STALKER]

LEVEL: 60 (B-RANK)

A creature dropped from the ceiling. It looked like a cross between a spider and a skeletal dragon, with eight legs tipped with obsidian blades. It moved silently, circling Kael, sensing the vulnerability of the wounded prey.

It lunged.

SHING!

Its leg-blade stabbed down, aiming for Kael's neck.

At the last millisecond, Kael's hand snapped up.

[TELEKINESIS: CATCH]

He caught the blade in his palm. The sharp edge sliced his skin, but he didn't let go.

"Got you."

Kael's eyes snapped open. They were no longer human. The left was the blue of lightning; the right was the gold of a dragon.

DEVOUR INITIATED: CONTACT DRAIN.

He didn't eat the whole creature at once. He drained it through the point of contact.

The Stalker shrieked, trying to pull back, but Kael held it in an iron grip.

"GIVE... ME... YOUR... STRENGTH."

MANA ABSORBED: 400.VITALITY ABSORBED: 200.

Kael's shattered arm crunched audibly as the bones knitted together. His lungs re-inflated.

With a roar, Kael yanked the creature down, flipping it onto its back. He plunged his hand into its chest.

DEVOUR COMPLETE.

The creature turned to dust.

LEVEL UP!

LEVEL 51 → 52.

ABILITY ROLL: SUCCESS.

ABILITY ACQUIRED: [CEILING WALK] (GRADE: C).

Kael stood up. The pain was gone, replaced by a cold, thrumming power. He cracked his neck.

"One down," he muttered. "Infinite to go."

Three Days Later.

Kael stood at the edge of a massive underground chasm. He had spent seventy-two hours hunting.

He hadn't slept. He hadn't rested. He had become a ghost in the deep levels, ambushing B-Rank monsters, devouring them, and moving on.

He was no longer just healing. He was evolving.

HOST STATUS:LEVEL: 58 (C-RANK PEAK)

MANA: 5000/5000

NEW ABILITIES ACQUIRED:

[INFRARED VISION] (D)[SONIC SCREECH] (C)[CHITIN ARMOR] (C) - Temporary skin hardening.

But he was lost. The dungeon was infinite. He needed a way out, or he needed to find a place of power.

He looked across the chasm. On the other side, carved into the living rock, was a structure.

It wasn't a natural cave. It was a gate. A massive, stone archway covered in runes that glowed with a faint, sickly green light.

SYSTEM ALERT

SPECIAL LOCATION DETECTED: [THE FORGOTTEN LABYRINTH]

DESCRIPTION: A SUB-DUNGEON. A PRISON FOR AN ANCIENT ENTITY.

DIFFICULTY: A-RANK.

A Sub-Dungeon.

Kael grinned. A prison meant a prisoner. And a prisoner meant power.

He leaped across the chasm, landing softly on the other side. As he approached the gate, the runes flared.

WARNING: ENTRY REQUIRES [KEY] OR [BLOOD SACRIFICE].

"Blood it is."

Kael bit his thumb, smearing his hybrid blood—Dhampir mixed with Dragon—onto the stone.

The gate shuddered. The ancient stone ground open, revealing a spiral staircase descending into pure darkness.

A cold wind blew up from the depths, carrying the scent of... decay? No. Preservation.

"System," Kael thought. "Map this place."

MAPPING INITIATED...

WARNING: SPATIAL DISTORTION DETECTED. MAP UNRELIABLE.

Kael descended. The air grew colder. The draconic heat of the main dungeon faded, replaced by an oppressive silence.

He reached the bottom. The room was a vast, circular hall. Pillars of white marble lined the sides. In the center, suspended by chains of glowing blue light, was a coffin.

It wasn't a stone coffin. It was made of glass and metal, filled with a viscous, blue liquid.

Inside floated a figure.

It was a woman.

She had pale skin, long white hair that floated in the liquid, and a beauty that seemed unnatural—too perfect, too sharp. She wore ancient armor that looked like it belonged in a museum.

But what caught Kael's attention were the two things floating near her hands.

A sword. And a grail.

SYSTEM SCAN

TARGET: UNKNOWN

STATUS: SEALED / SLEEPING.

RACE: PUREBLOOD VAMPIRE (ANCESTOR).

THREAT: S-RANK (SEALED).

Pureblood.

Not a Dhampir. Not a turned vampire. An Ancestor.

Kael stepped closer. He could feel the System vibrating with hunger. This was a meal beyond anything he had ever seen.

But he also felt a strange resonance. The Dhampir blood in him recognized the source.

"Mother always said our lineage was special," Kael murmured. "I guess this is the family tree."

He walked to the control console near the coffin. It was old tech, mixed with magic.

SYSTEM QUERY: ATTEMPT TO UNSEAL?

Kael paused. Unsealing an S-Rank Ancestor was suicide. She would wake up hungry. And he was the only blood bag in the room.

Unless...

Unless I make a deal.

Kael placed his hand on the glass.

"Hello, Grandmother," he whispered. "I'm Kael. And I think we can help each other."

He didn't unseal her yet. He needed leverage. He needed to understand the seal.

He closed his eyes and activated [Devour].

But he didn't devour her. That was impossible.

He devoured the knowledge of the seal from the runes on the glass.

SYSTEM NOTIFICATIONCONSUMING RUNIC DATA...

ABILITY ACQUIRED: [RUNE READING: VAMPIRIC] (GRADE: B).

SEAL ANALYSIS: [BLOOD KEY]. THE SEAL REQUIRES THE BLOOD OF A LINEAGE DESCENDANT TO OPEN.

Kael smiled.

I am the key.

He looked at the sleeping woman.

"I'll let you out," he told the unconscious form. "Eventually. But first... I need you to teach me how to be a proper monster."

He sat down cross-legged in front of the coffin.

"System, initiate [Soul Binding] preparation. Not on her... but on the seal."

If he couldn't eat her, he would eat the magic holding her. He would turn this prison into his own personal charging station.

PROCESS INITIATED.

As Kael began to drain the ancient mana from the sealing runes, the woman's eyes snapped open inside the liquid.

They were red. Blood red.

And they were staring directly at him.
