Chapter 8 - That afternoon in Dhanmondi

The afternoon felt strangely heavy.

The sky was sunny, but there was an uneasiness mixed with that sunshine. As if even nature understood—something was going to happen today.

Mehreen was standing in front of the mirror.

Her hands were shaking.

She didn't know—where this path would take her today.

She asked herself this question many times whether she should go or not.

But one thing didn't let her stop—

the desire to know the truth.

Finally, she got out.

As she sat in the rickshaw heading towards Dhanmondi, her heart was pounding strangely.

The sounds of the street, the crowds of people—everything seemed blurry to her.

Only one thing was going through her mind—

"Today everything will change."

Reaching Dhanmondi Lake, she paid the fare and got out.

There were many people around.

Some were walking, some were taking pictures, some were sitting on benches and talking.

Everything was so natural.

But a storm was brewing inside her.

She looked around.

"Where is that woman?" she thought to herself.

Just then, a message came to her phone.

Unknown Number:

"Look to the right."

Mehreen slowly turned her head and looked to the right.

A bench a little further away.

A woman was sitting there.

A white sari, sunglasses on her eyes.

She slowly stood up.

Then, looking at Mehreen, she raised her hand and pointed.

Mehreen's chest heaved.

She slowly walked towards her.

As she stood in front of the woman, she took off her sunglasses.

Mehreen froze.

There was a strange look in the woman's eyes—cold, confident, and somewhere hidden pain.

"You?" Mehreen said slowly.

The woman smiled lightly.

"You've come… good."

"Who are you?" Mehreen's voice was trembling.

The woman didn't answer directly.

She just said—

"You want to know the truth, right?"

Mehreen nodded.

The woman remained silent for a while, looking at her.

Then she slowly said—

"So you have to see something today."

"What thing?" Mehreen asked.

The woman leaned towards her a little and said—

"The truth."

Then she raised her hand and pointed towards a cafe in the distance.

"Look over there."

Mehreen slowly looked in that direction.

Through the glass of the cafe, you could see—people were sitting.

Some were drinking coffee, some were talking.

At first, everything seemed normal.

But after a few seconds—

her eyes became fixed.

Her breathing started to catch.

Because at a table in a corner of that cafe—

Rashed was sitting.

Mehreen's eyes widened.

A woman was next to her.

No… not just sitting—

Rashed was holding the woman's hand.

The woman was smiling and saying something.

And Rashed…

She was smiling in a way that Mehreen had never seen for her.

Mehreen's head started to shake.

"No… this can't be…" she whispered.

Her eyes were blurring.

The woman was standing next to her.

She said slowly—

"That's true."

Mehreen said in a trembling voice—

"Who… is she?"

The woman looked directly at her now.

A strange look in her eyes.

"Do you really want to know?"

Mehreen couldn't say anything.

Her whole body was shaking.

The woman said slowly—

"She's not just some unknown girl…"

She paused for a moment.

Then she said in a very calm voice—

"She's Rashed's first wife."

Hearing this, Mehreen felt like the world had stopped.

Her ears were ringing.

All the sounds around her had stopped.

She looked back at the cafe.

Rashed was still smiling.

That smile of his—which he had never kept for Mehreen.

Tears rolled down Mehreen's eyes.

She felt—everything inside her was crumbling.

She said slowly—

"So… who am I?"

The woman didn't answer.

Just stared at him.

A strange truth was hidden in that gaze.

Mehreen suddenly felt—

The story of her life was taking a new turn today.

But where that turn would take her—

she didn't know yet.

Just then, Rashed suddenly raised his head inside the cafe and looked.

His eyes met Mehreen's eyes directly.

The two of them locked eyes for a moment.

Rashed's smile faded.

His eyes became clear—

Fear.

And at that moment, Mehreen understood—

The biggest storm in this story was about to begin now.
