Chapter 60 - The Edge of Intimacy

The moment felt longer than it should have.

Lian Hua stood near the edge of the ballroom, her fingers lightly clasped together, her thoughts still echoing with everything that had just been said.

You either belong… or you don't.

"Lian Hua."

She turned.

Zhen Wei was back.

Relief washed over her instantly.

But before she could say anything—

He was already studying her face.

"You're not fine," he said quietly.

She tried to smile.

"I said I would be."

"That doesn't mean you are."

He stepped closer.

Too close for anyone else to interrupt.

Too close for her to hide anything.

"What happened?" he asked.

She hesitated.

Then answered honestly.

"Your world happened."

His expression hardened slightly.

"Someone said something."

"It's not just one person," she said softly.

"It's everything."

Silence.

Zhen Wei reached out, gently lifting her chin so she would look at him.

"You're still here," he said.

Her breath caught slightly.

"Yes."

"Then that's all that matters."

She searched his eyes.

"But it matters to me too," she whispered.

"How I feel… where I stand…"

His gaze softened.

"I don't want you to feel small here," she added.

Zhen Wei's hand remained steady.

"You're not small."

"That's not how it feels."

A quiet pause.

Then—

"Come with me."

Before she could ask where—

He took her hand and led her away.

Out of the ballroom.

Down a quiet hallway.

Away from the noise.

The lights.

The people.

Until they reached a private balcony.

The night air was cool.

Calm.

A complete contrast to everything inside.

Lian Hua exhaled slowly.

"I needed this," she admitted.

Zhen Wei stood beside her.

Watching her.

Not the city.

Not the view.

Her.

"You don't have to prove anything to them," he said.

"I know."

"Then why are you letting them affect you?"

She looked out at the city lights.

"Because this is your world."

"And?"

"And I don't want to be the one who doesn't belong in it."

Silence.

Zhen Wei stepped closer.

"You belong wherever I am," he said quietly.

Her heart tightened.

"You say that like it's simple."

"It is."

She turned to him.

"It's not for me."

For a moment—

Neither of them spoke.

Then—

Zhen Wei reached out again.

But this time—

His touch was different.

Softer.

Slower.

His fingers brushed gently against her cheek.

"You're overthinking," he murmured.

"Maybe," she whispered.

"But I'm not."

His voice dropped.

"I chose you knowing exactly what my world is."

Her heart skipped.

"And I'm still choosing you."

The words settled deep.

The distance between them disappeared again.

Lian Hua felt it.

That same pull.

That same tension.

That same closeness from before—

But stronger now.

"Zhen Wei…"

"Yes?"

"This is dangerous."

"I know."

"Then why do you keep doing it?"

He leaned closer.

"Because you don't stop me."

Her breath caught.

And just like before—

He paused.

Giving her a choice.

She didn't move.

Didn't step back.

Didn't look away.

So he closed the distance.

This time—

The kiss wasn't hesitant.

It was deeper.

More certain.

More real.

Lian Hua felt her heart race as everything around her faded again.

The pressure.

The doubts.

The voices.

All gone.

There was only him.

And the moment.

When they finally pulled apart—

The air between them felt warmer.

Heavier.

Charged.

"You see?" he said softly.

She looked at him, her cheeks flushed.

"…I do."

And for the first time that night—

She didn't feel out of place.
