Chapter 4 - Chapter 4: Awakening of the Void Chronicle

The light faded slowly, like a fire learning to die gracefully.

Liu Yun found himself on his knees in front of the altar, his hands still pressed flat against the now-open book. The pages were blank, not empty-blank, not waiting-to-be-written blank, but the particular non-blank blankness of a surface that contains everything and chooses to show nothing yet. He could feel them against his skin: warm, faintly vibrating, like the cover of a speaker playing frequencies below hearing.

His vision had cleared but the world looked different. A thin layer of overlay information hung at the edges of his sight, not obtrusive, not blocking, but present in the way that peripheral vision is present. Status bars and numerical values that he could focus on or ignore at will. He focused.

[VOID CHRONICLE - STATUS INTERFACE]

[HOST: LIU YUN]

[TITLE: NONE]

[CLASS: VOID SOVEREIGN (UNAWAKENED)]

[LEVEL: 1]

[STRENGTH: 8 | AGILITY: 9 | ENDURANCE: 7 | PERCEPTION: 11 | VOID AFFINITY: 1,140]

He stared at the last value. Void Affinity: 1,140. Every other statistic was the modest number of an untrained E-rank human. But that last one was not modest. He had never seen an Affinity value above three hundred in any of the testing manuals he'd read. The Association's measuring equipment topped out at a thousand.

[EXPLANATION - VOID-TYPE MANA:]

[Standard mana operates on a positive polarity, generating measurable output signatures. Void-type mana operates on negative polarity, it absorbs rather than emits. Standard equipment reads it as near-zero because it is designed to detect output. Your mana has been consuming ambient energy since your Awakening three years ago, storing it in a Void Core that now contains reserves equivalent to a mid-tier A-rank Hunter. This energy is available for immediate use via System-granted abilities.]

Liu Yun sat back on his heels and read that message three times.

Three years. For three years he had been classified as an E-rank failure, scraping the bottom of the Hunter hierarchy, living on poverty wages and secondhand gear, while inside him something had been quietly drinking in the world's power and saving it up like a patient collector.

He had a complicated feeling about that.

[CORE ABILITIES - VOID SOVEREIGN:]

[1. SHADOW EXTRACTION - Draw the residual soul-shadow from a defeated creature and bind it as a permanent subordinate soldier under your command. The shadow retains the creature's abilities and physical strength. Strength is augmented by your Void Affinity. Cost: Void Energy. Limit: None. Loyalty: Absolute.]

[2. VOID ASSIMILATION - Consume a monster core to absorb one passive ability from the creature it belonged to. Requires contact with the core and ten seconds of focus. Cost: Void Energy.]

[3. SHADOW DOMAIN - Project a field of Void energy in a radius determined by your level. Within the Domain, your shadow soldiers gain enhanced strength and speed. Enemy creatures suffer reduced mobility. Cost: High. Duration: Sustained.]

[4. VOID STEP - Instant short-range teleportation through shadow material. Requires an existing shadow target. Cost: Low.]

[FIRST QUEST - AWAKENING TRIAL:]

[Objective: Extract the shadow of one creature before leaving this chamber.]

[Reward: +5 to all base stats. Shadow Soldier Slot +10. Title: 'Shadow Born.']

Liu Yun stood slowly. His ribs still hurt from last week's run. His neck bruises had faded to yellow. He looked around the chamber at the pillar creatures, frozen, chained, waiting.

The book had called them Void-Sealed. Creatures that had been captured by a previous Void-type entity, someone who had held this power before him, and preserved here specifically for this moment. A tutorial, in the most literal possible sense: a room full of practice subjects.

He looked at the nearest one. A Bone Sentinel, roughly humanoid, constructed from the fused remains of multiple skeletons, standing about two meters tall with a ribcage that had expanded into something like armor plating. Rank equivalent: D-minus. Strong enough to be a serious threat to an E-ranker in normal circumstances.

These were not normal circumstances.

He called up Shadow Extraction in his mind. It came naturally, like remembering a word in a language he'd forgotten he knew, and he felt the Void energy in his chest stir. It wasn't the hot surge of standard mana that other Hunters described, the burning-upward feeling of power rising through your core. It was the opposite: a cooling, a deepening, as if the air around him was being very gently pulled inward.

He aimed it at the sealed Bone Sentinel and said, simply, 'Extract.'

The chains on the pillar dissolved. The Bone Sentinel, still preserved-still, still frozen, came loose and dropped to the obsidian floor with a sound like a chandelier falling. It did not move, but at its base Liu Yun could now see it: the shadow.

Every creature casts a shadow. But the shadow of an Underworld creature is not merely the absence of light, it is a residual soul-substance, the echo of everything the creature was, compressed into a two-dimensional projection of itself. This one was sharp-edged and dark, darker than the already dark floor, twitching slightly at the edges like a living thing trying to remember it exists.

He reached for it with the Void Extraction and it came.

Not with resistance. With relief. That was the only word for it. The shadow rose from the floor like a hand being offered and flowed toward him, and where it touched his outstretched palm it did not stop. It passed through his skin and settled somewhere inside him that wasn't a physical location, a place inside the Void Core that his system called the Shadow Register. He felt it there, a new presence, loyal and ready and utterly without its own agenda.

[SHADOW EXTRACTED: BONE SENTINEL - UNIT DESIGNATION: SHADOW-01]

[COMMAND AVAILABLE: SUMMON / DISMISS / DIRECT]

He said, 'Summon.'

The shadow rose from the floor at his feet, not the floor-shadow of the original creature, but his floor-shadow, emerging from it upright and solid, the Bone Sentinel rebuilt from pure darkness, its eye sockets burning with faint violet light, its posture that of a soldier awaiting orders.

[FIRST SHADOW SOLDIER ACQUIRED]

[QUEST COMPLETE - AWAKENING TRIAL]

[ALL BASE STATS +5. SHADOW SOLDIER SLOTS: 10. TITLE ACQUIRED: 'SHADOW BORN']

Liu Yun looked at the shadow standing before him, his shadow, his soldier, waiting.

He had thirty more practice subjects in this room.

He got to work.
