Chapter 43 - 43: The Nebula of Lost Souls and the Echo of a Mother

The violet streak of light that was Arthur and Aiden cut through the darkness of deep space, leaving the solar system behind. They were now in the interstellar void, a place where the light of the sun was nothing more than a distant, twinkling memory.

In front of them lay a massive cloud of swirling gas and starlight—the Nebula of Lost Souls. It wasn't beautiful like the nebulae Arthur had seen in science books back on Earth. This one was a bruised, sickly green, and it hummed with a sound that made Arthur's skin crawl. It sounded like a billion whispers, all crying out at once.

"Dad, the voices... they're so sad," Aiden said, his small hand gripping Arthur's cloak. Even with his 1000x multiplier, the boy looked pale. "They're asking for someone to hold them."

Arthur pulled Aiden closer. "Don't listen to them too closely, son. This place is the 'Trash Bin' of the Origin. When a planet is harvested or formatted, the souls that don't fit into the gods' energy cores are dumped here. They are the 'bugs' in the system."

But Arthur's own heart was hammering against his ribs. According to the data he had ripped from the Messenger, this was where the souls of the 'inefficient' were kept—the ones who had died before the harvest was complete.

"Somewhere in there," Arthur whispered to himself, "is the woman who gave me everything."

The Guardian of the Grave

As they entered the outer rim of the nebula, the green gas thickened, becoming as dense as soup. Arthur had to increase his aura to keep the toxic vapor from touching Aiden.

[Warning!]

[Entering High-Density Soul Zone!]

[Detection: The Keeper of the Forgotten.]

[Power Level: Level 4000 (Primordial Class).]

Suddenly, the green gas began to take shape. A figure emerged, standing hundreds of feet tall. It didn't have a body; it was a mass of tangled, glowing chains, each chain holding a flickering soul. In the center of the chains was a single, massive mask made of cold iron.

"You do not belong here, Sovereign," the Keeper's voice was like stones grinding together. "This is the end of the line. The souls here have been deleted from the Great Ledger. To touch them is to invite the wrath of the Origin."

"I've already invited the wrath of the Origin and slapped its Messenger," Arthur said, his 'Void-Render' blade glowing with a dangerous, dark violet light. "I'm not here for your ledger. I'm here for one soul. My mother."

The Keeper laughed, a sound that sent ripples through the nebula. "A mother? You think a single human soul matters in a graveyard of trillions? She is a pixel in a sea of data, Arthur. She has been processed. She is nothing."

The Resonance of Blood

Aiden looked up at the giant mask, his eyes turning a solid, fiery purple. "My grandma isn't 'nothing'! Dad, he's lying!"

Aiden's 1000x multiplier flared up, and the green nebula began to vibrate. The boy's rage was so pure that it started to melt the iron chains of the Keeper.

"Aiden, wait!" Arthur said, but it was too late.

The Keeper swung a massive fist of chains toward them. Arthur intercepted it, his blade clashing against the divine iron. The impact sent a shockwave that cleared the gas for miles.

[100x Multiplier Activated!]

[Skill 'Void Fracture' multiplied x100!]

"Aiden, give me your hand!" Arthur roared.

The father and son linked fingers, and the 100,000x Resonance returned. But this time, it wasn't just destructive power. Because they were thinking about a loved one, the energy turned into a soft, pulsating gold.

"100,000x Multiplier... Concept: The Heart's Call!"

The golden wave didn't destroy the Keeper; it passed through him, searching. It searched through the trillions of souls held in the chains, looking for a specific DNA match, a specific frequency of love.

The Keeper screamed as the golden light forced his chains to unlock. "Stop! You are disrupting the balance! The Source will format us all!"

"Let it try!" Arthur yelled, his voice breaking with emotion.

The Fragment of Memory

In the middle of the golden storm, a single, tiny soul-flicker began to grow brighter. It wasn't green or white; it was a warm, earthy brown—the color of the tea Arthur used to drink, the color of the dirt floor of their old home.

The flicker flew toward Arthur, hovering just inches away from his face.

Inside the light, Arthur saw a face. It was tired, covered in wrinkles, but the eyes were full of a kindness that no 'System' could ever code.

"Arthur?" the voice whispered. It was faint, like a memory of a memory. "Is that you, my little porter?"

Arthur's knees buckled. He wasn't a Sovereign anymore. He wasn't Level 2500. He was just a son.

"Mom..." Arthur reached out, his hand trembling. Tears he hadn't shed in years began to fall, turning into violet crystals as they hit the vacuum. "I'm so sorry. I couldn't save you then. I was too weak. I couldn't even buy the medicine..."

"You were never weak, Arthur," the soul whispered, touching his cheek with a ghostly hand. "You carried the weight of our whole world. I'm so proud of the man you've become."

She looked at Aiden, who was watching with wide, wet eyes. "And who is this little miracle?"

"This is Aiden, Mom," Arthur said, a sob escaping his chest. "Your grandson."

Aiden reached out and touched the light. "Hi, Grandma. Dad told me you were the strongest person he ever knew."

The Ultimate Choice

The Keeper of the Forgotten was recovering, his chains glowing with a dark, red light. The 'Origin' was sending a direct command to destroy the anomaly.

"System Overwrite: All Soul-Fragments in Sector 7 to be Erased Immediately."

The green nebula began to collapse in on itself, forming a massive black hole that was designed to swallow the entire zone.

"You have to go, Arthur," his mother's soul said, her light beginning to fade. "The Origin is afraid of you. As long as you and Aiden are alive, there is hope for the others. Don't let me be the weight that holds you back again."

"No!" Arthur roared, his 100x multiplier surging. "I am NOT leaving you here!"

[Ding!]

[Hidden Logic Found!]

[100x Multiplier + Soul Essence = Permanent Manifestation?]

Arthur looked at the system prompt. It was a gamble. He could use all his XP and his multiplier to 'Re-code' his mother's soul into a physical body, but it would leave him vulnerable to the next Devourer.

"Dad, do it!" Aiden yelled, his small hands glowing with 1000x power. "I'll protect you! I'm a porter too!"

Arthur looked at his son, then at his mother. He smiled—a real, dangerous, Sovereign smile.

"System," Arthur commanded. "Burn every single XP point I have. Multiply the 'Reconstruction' by a hundred. Bring... her... BACK."

[100x Multiplier Activated!]

[XP Consumed: 1,000,000,000!]

[Process: 1%... 50%... 100%!]

The white light of the reconstruction exploded, pushing back the green nebula and shattering the Keeper of the Forgotten into a million pieces. When the light faded, the 'Nebula of Lost Souls' was gone. In its place was a peaceful, quiet pocket of space.

And in Arthur's arms, breathing for the first time in years, was his mother.

The Sovereign's Family

Arthur's Level dropped from 2500 to 1000. He was weak, his armor was gone, and he felt every bit of the exhaustion he had been ignoring. But as he looked at his mother hugging Aiden, he had never felt more powerful.

"We did it, son," Arthur whispered, leaning against a floating rock.

"We're a team, Dad," Aiden said, his 1000x multiplier still pulsing steadily.

But Arthur knew the cost. By bringing back a 'Deleted' soul, he had officially declared war on the Prime Architect—the one who wrote the first line of code.

[Warning!]

[The Prime Architect is awakening.]

[Current Status: The Hunted.]

Arthur looked at the stars. "Let him come. I've got my mom, my son, and a hundred ways to kill a creator. This porter isn't done yet."
