Chapter 8 - Chapter 8: First Mission

Yami Sukehiro lazily dug some earwax and flicked it onto the ground before saying, "Asta, Noelle, Magna, you three are going to Sosshi Village because there's a mission."

Asta's eyes immediately lit up as he shouted excitedly that he was finally going on a mission.

Yami waved his hand casually and replied that he had lost a card game to an old man, so they were being sent to deal with some wild boars.

Noelle frowned and asked why he didn't go himself.

Magna quickly answered for him by saying that bosses never clean up their own mistakes and that it was always the underlings who had to deal with the consequences.

Yami nodded approvingly and told them to get moving.

Just after leaving the Black Bulls' base, the group encountered Cedric.

Asta immediately ran toward him and shouted happily that he was going on a mission and would soon learn powerful magic.

Noelle nervously fiddled with the hem of her skirt and asked Cedric whether he wanted to come along if he wasn't busy.

Magna secretly hoped Cedric would agree so he could slack off during the mission.

Cedric shook his head and replied that they should go ahead because he had other things to do, but he wished them good luck.

Magna then said that Asta would ride on his Crazy Cyclone with him while asking Noelle whether she could fly on her broom.

Asta stared at the motorcycle-shaped broom with sparkling eyes and shouted that it looked incredibly cool.

Magna laughed proudly and said he was starting to like the kid more and more.

Noelle silently thought that the broom looked hideous and wondered why Cedric wasn't the one going on the mission with her.

Magna flew ahead while holding Asta by the waist, and Noelle followed behind them on her broom.

Soon they arrived at Sosshi Village.

Magna pointed at the surrounding forest and explained that their mission was to clear out the wild boars before telling Asta to start.

Asta immediately drew his anti-magic sword and charged toward a wild boar, only to discover that the creature could breathe fire.

He shouted in frustration that even wild boars could use magic while he couldn't.

With a loud cry, Asta swung his sword and defeated the beast.

Magna cheered loudly while telling Noelle to cheer for Asta as well.

Noelle rolled her eyes and mocked them for taking so long to deal with a single beast.

Magna angrily explained that the creature was a Flame-Tusked Magic Boar and that it was actually quite strong.

Noelle found the entire situation boring and opened her grimoire before launching hundreds of water spears toward the boar herd.

Magna panicked and shouted that she would only enrage them.

Magna immediately cast Fire Magic: Blast Scatter Magic Sphere.

The water spears struck the herd and knocked most of the boars unconscious, while Magna's magic spheres mostly hit empty air.

Magna awkwardly praised Noelle and told Asta to tie up the unconscious boars so they could report the mission as complete.

Asta suddenly noticed the surrounding fog and asked why it was so thick.

Magna casually guessed that it was probably just moisture in the air.

Noelle trembled with anger and shouted that the fog clearly contained abnormal magical power and was obviously a spell.

Magna found that hard to believe and replied that such a large fog spell would require the power of at least a Magic Knight, which was unlikely in a poor village located in the Outer Commoner Realm.

The Clover Kingdom was divided into the Royal Realm, the Noble Realm, the Common Realm, and the Outer Commoner Realm according to magical power levels, and people living in the Outer Commoner Realm rarely possessed any significant magic.

Magna ordered Asta to cut through the fog.

Asta obediently swung his anti-magic sword repeatedly, dispersing the magical fog as if he were a fog-clearing machine.

Magna clenched his fist nervously while thinking that he hoped the old man was safe.

Old Man Saifi had been his first mentor, and without him Magna might have remained a street thug forever.

Magna guided Asta toward the village square.

When they arrived at the square, they saw villagers kneeling on the ground while several bodies lay nearby.

Magna immediately recognized Old Man Saifi among them and became furious.

Meanwhile, several enemies stood nearby.

A white-haired man with a hexagonal scar on his forehead held an ice blade while discussing whether the newcomers might be villagers who had escaped capture.

One of the underlings replied that one of the newcomers had considerable magical power and might be a Magic Knight.

The leader shrugged and said it didn't matter before announcing that it was time to begin the execution.

He launched the ice blade and killed another villager.

He then declared that if they didn't reveal the location of the magic stone within ten minutes, another villager would die.

Asta suddenly burst into the square while shouting that they had finally arrived and asking why everyone was kneeling.

Seeing the dead villagers and the old man's body, Magna erupted with rage.

Magna launched Fire Magic: Prison Blast Scatter Magic Sphere toward the enemies.

The underlings responded with Fog Magic: Illusory Mist Vortex, swallowing the fire spheres within the fog.

Magna shouted angrily and launched Soul-Piercing Sphere, striking the glowing magic sphere with two flaming baseball bats and sending it flying through the fog toward the leader.

The leader blocked it with an ice shield, but the intense heat began melting the shield.

He quickly used Ice–Fog Composite Magic: Infinite Ice Shield, using the surrounding moisture to continuously repair the barrier until the sphere's energy was exhausted.

The leader mocked Magna for becoming angry over commoners, claiming that people born in the Outer Commoner Realm were nothing more than livestock.

He further mocked the Magic Knights as nothing more than guards serving the royal nobles.

Declaring that the time limit had expired, he prepared to execute another villager.

Asta immediately jumped forward and knocked the ice spike away with his sword while shouting that even if their magic was weak, the villagers were still human beings and that he would become the Wizard King and correct such injustice.

Noelle stepped forward with determination and declared that although the royal family might see them as inferior, they were still citizens of the Clover Kingdom who deserved protection.

Her grimoire suddenly glowed as a new spell appeared.

Noelle cast Water Creation Magic: Sea Dragon's Cradle, forming a massive water barrier that covered the square and protected all the villagers.

The enemy attempted to break the barrier but failed.

The leader mocked Noelle and asked how long her magic could last while protecting so many people.

He then cast Ice–Fog Composite Magic: Infinite Ice Gravel Cage, creating endless ice spikes from the fog that continuously bombarded the barrier.

Noelle quickly explained a plan to Asta and Magna.

Magna launched Fire Magic: Prison Blast Scatter Magic Sphere while Noelle activated Water Creation Magic: Waltz on the Mirrored Lake, increasing their movement speed.

The scattered fire spheres rushed toward the enemy.

The leader confidently activated Infinite Ice Shield again.

At that moment Noelle shouted for Asta to attack.

Asta suddenly appeared behind the enemy and knocked out the underlings with his sword.

The leader attempted to retaliate with an ice spike, but Noelle protected Asta with Sea Dragon's Cradle.

Magna seized the opportunity and struck the enemy with Prison Blast Explosive Flame Sphere.

With Asta attacking from behind and Magna attacking from the front, the leader was finally defeated and collapsed unconscious.

Magna then used Fire Restraint Magic: Flame Rope Binding Array to restrain the enemies.

Noelle sarcastically praised Magna for being able to use such delicate magic despite being a rough delinquent.

Magna angrily demanded that she call him Senior Magna.

The group discussed interrogating the enemies once they woke up.

However, when the leader regained consciousness, he spoke cryptically about their inevitable return and the coming reckoning.

Suddenly he cast Ice Magic: Ice Burial, freezing himself and his companions before shattering into countless ice crystals.

Magna could not understand their true objective.

Later, Magna stood silently before Old Man Saifi's grave and said that he had heard from the villagers that the old man had stood up to protect them when the attackers arrived.

Magna wiped his tears and promised that he would become a real man just like his mentor.

The wind carried his tears across the earth as he stood quietly before the grave.
