Chapter 67 - Chapter 66: Gradually Withered

"Analyze the Caged Bird Seal?"

Uzumaki Ashina repeated the phrase slowly, as though weighing the weight of the words themselves. He shook his head with a deep sigh. "If your goal is to completely eliminate the Caged Bird Seal, then… it is almost impossible."

"Almost impossible?" Uchiha Su's lips curled into a faint, confident smile. "Does that mean you can do it?"

"No," Ashina said flatly, shaking his head again. "It's genuinely difficult, far beyond what I can fully accomplish. The Caged Bird Seal is not just a mark—it involves the very essence of the soul itself."

Uchiha Su frowned, puzzled. "Then why… why place such a limit on it? Surely the Hyuga Branch House must despise being bound in this way. Why wouldn't they leave Konoha—or even their clan?"

Ashina's gaze sharpened. "Ahem… young man, you are judging the Hyuga Branch with the perspective of an Uchiha." His tone carried the weight of decades of history. "I am a Ninja who has lived through the Warring States Period. I have seen Uchiha Tajima, Senju Butsuma, Hyuga Ichizoku… I have witnessed countless events and clan intrigues. The Caged Bird Seal has existed for centuries, and throughout that time, the Branch House has never rebelled against the Main Branch. That proves one thing: this rule has endured because it is… acceptable to those under it."

Su slammed his palm onto the table, standing abruptly. "Acceptable? But this is slavery!"

Uzumaki Kotaro, standing quietly behind Ashina, shivered. Fear flickered in his eyes as he looked at Su, whose voice had risen with righteous indignation.

Ashina's expression remained calm, unruffled. "Slavery?" he asked softly. "I would call it protection. The Caged Bird Seal exists to prevent the loss of the Byakugan. It is the most critical safeguard of the Hyuga Clan's Kekkei Genkai. If the seal is breached or removed improperly, the Byakugan is destroyed, and the person marked would die instantly from brain death. This is not about oppression—it is a matter of survival."

Su's fists clenched. "But… slavery!" he repeated, his voice shaking with disbelief.

Ashina leaned forward slightly, his tone patient yet firm. "Even without the Caged Bird Seal, would an ordinary Hyuga clansman dare defy the Clan Head? Disobedience carries consequences even without seals. Discipline can be enforced through authority and respect, and most will comply voluntarily. The Branch House protects the Main Branch because it is logical and necessary, not merely because they are forced to do so."

He continued, his voice calm but unwavering. "Consider this: Uchiha Su, even though you are strong, you still take a dozen Anbu with you whenever you go out. Your strength alone is not sufficient to ensure your safety. The presence of loyal subordinates guarantees your security. Similarly, the Branch House, even without the Caged Bird Seal, would protect the Main Branch because it is in their interest to do so."

Uchiha Su opened his mouth to reply, but Ashina raised a hand, cutting him off.

"You are thinking from the perspective of an ambitious Uchiha, assuming that the Branch House hates the Main Branch and that the removal of the seal will automatically make them allies. That is an arrogant and dangerous assumption."

Ashina's eyes softened slightly. "Development in the world, in governance and leadership, can never fully satisfy everyone. Human hearts are complex, and their desires are not always aligned with what we perceive as 'just.'"

Su's jaw tightened. He had never been accustomed to hearing such logic, yet he found himself strangely intrigued. The disparity between expectation and reality was sharp, but he knew Ashina spoke from centuries of experience.

"Is that so?" Su finally said, his voice subdued, almost reflective. "Even so, I will keep my own thoughts. Perhaps the Hyuga Clan and I are not destined to unite… but it is not the end of the world. There are other Ninjas with exceptional sensory abilities in this world. We can adapt."

Ashina raised an eyebrow. "Other Ninjas?"

Su's smile widened faintly. "I think your Uzumaki Clan's sensory abilities are remarkable. You even know how many Anbu I brought here today."

Ashina's expression darkened slightly, his suspicion clear. "What are you implying?"

"I am only observing," Su replied smoothly, his gaze drifting toward Uzumaki Kotaro. "Kotaro is the next Clan Head of the Uzumaki Clan, correct?"

"That is correct," Ashina said, his voice low, but his eyes betrayed unease.

Su nodded faintly, smiling calmly. He said no more, letting the silence linger. The room seemed heavier as the tension between them grew, punctuated only by the faint hum of distant chakra.

Ashina's face grew darker with each passing moment, but he knew the time left to him was limited. He had called Kotaro in to serve tea not merely as courtesy—it was preparation. He needed Su to see his son, to know him, and, perhaps, to regard him with some respect once Ashina was gone.

"I estimate that I do not have much time left," Ashina said quietly, almost to himself. "Even if I wished to maintain the Village and guide its affairs, my body will no longer allow it. Kotaro… his abilities are limited. His heart is kind, but his personality is weak. In this harsh world, surviving, let alone thriving, will be a challenge. If he can preserve the Village… that alone would be a miracle."

Kotaro's eyes glistened. "Father…"

Ashina gave him a faint, weary smile. "This is also my fault. Being an old man and having a child so late, I could not bear to be strict with your upbringing. I indulged you where I should have been firm."

Su observed quietly, his expression softening. "Father… these are the sacrifices of the old era. The elders, even after long lifetimes, gradually wither. The young generation must step onto the stage of the new era. There is no longer a vessel to carry the old across the waters of time."

Ashina's eyes shimmered with a mix of pride and resignation. "Perhaps… yet here we are, preparing for the future as best we can."

He shifted in his chair, his energy waning. "Starting tomorrow, the Land of Whirlpools will abolish its schools. All students will be sent to the Hidden Mist to study. The clansmen who are proficient in Sealing Techniques will also go to teach. Are you satisfied with this arrangement?"

"I could not be more satisfied," Su said sincerely.

Ashina nodded, a faint, tired smile breaking through his weathered features. "Of course, I must also make a promise: no matter how the world changes, as long as the Uchiha exist for even a single day, the Uzumaki clansmen will never face hardship or misfortune."

Su inclined his head solemnly. "A promise is sacred. Once given, it must be honored."

"Then," Ashina said, leaning back and closing his eyes briefly, "I can rest easy."

The lines on Ashina's face deepened. Though his expression carried peace, the weight of age, illness, and responsibility bore down upon him. Su could sense the fragility of the man before him, and in that quiet moment, understood that the era of these old warriors was drawing to a close. A new era awaited—the one that he, Uchiha Su, was destined to shape.

Outside, the Hidden Mist Village pulsed with life. The wind carried the sound of construction, the chatter of students, and the faint shimmer of chakra. Inside the quiet chamber, Su and Ashina sat together—a meeting of past and future, of experience and ambition, of promises made and legacies yet to unfold.

And though Ashina's body gradually withered, his will remained unbroken, laying the foundation for a new generation to rise under the watchful eyes of the Hidden Mist.
