Chapter 17 - Chapter 17: Showing Her Prowess

As soon as those words were spoken, the way everyone looked at Jing Meng changed instantly. Jing Meng also shifted her gaze toward Jenny.

This was the second time!

Did she really think Jing Meng was a pushover who could be bullied at will? Since Jenny loved to show off so much, Jing Meng would give her the opportunity.

"Miss Jenny, have you perhaps seen through the mystery? Otherwise, why are you so certain that I'm just talking nonsense?" Jing Meng's eyes flickered. Her tone was steady and unhurried, and her ink-black eyes showed no emotion, yet her aura was so imposing that no one dared to look her in the eye.

This woman was not to be trifled with!

Everyone silently made that mental note.

"I..." Jenny was suddenly at a loss for words. Seeing everyone's attention shift toward her, her expression changed slightly. "I never said that."

"Oh, so Miss Jenny doesn't know either." Jing Meng slowly raised an eyebrow, replying indifferently, but anyone could hear the mockery in her voice.

"Alright, why don't you tell us about this drawing first, Miss Jing?" Seeing that everyone's attention had been diverted to Jenny, Old Madame Pei spoke up to draw their focus back to Jing Meng.

"You should tell us what you've discovered, shouldn't you, girl?" Old Master Pei smiled kindly, his eyes full of warmth.

Jing Meng gave a soft reply and, under the watchful eyes of the crowd, picked up the design drawing once more.

After staring at the drawing for a moment, she spoke again. "Give me a pair of scissors."

This time, no one questioned her. Since Old Master Pei had spoken up, indicating his trust in her, they weren't going to be so blind as to step forward and seek their own deaths.

A pair of scissors was quickly delivered to Jing Meng. Without even looking up, she took them and murmured a soft thanks.

"You're welcome!" The gentle male voice was extremely familiar to her, causing her to involuntarily look up from the drawing.

What met her eyes was Pei Shiyi's face, which carried a faint smile. Jing Meng's heart skipped a beat, and she cleared her throat uncomfortably.

"If you need anything, Mengmeng, just say the word." Pei Shiyi looked at her blushing face and thought she was absolutely adorable.

"Th—thank you." Jing Meng quickly lowered her head, forcing herself to focus on the blueprint.

Standing below the stage, Jenny watched as Pei Shiyi smiled at Jing Meng. Her eyes filled with venom as she glared at the girl, her fists clenching until her nails dug into her palms.

Meanwhile, Old Madame Pei narrowed her eyes as she watched the two of them.

Jing Meng held the scissors and studied the design for a moment before decisively cutting out the center of the drawing.

"?!"

No one expected her to be so bold. Questions were on the tips of everyone's tongues, but at a single glance at Old Master Pei's expression, they all fell silent again.

Jing Meng took the pieces she had cut out and rearranged them. The design drawing actually transformed into a completely different layout.

"This is..."

Old Master Pei couldn't help but stand up.

Seeing his reaction, everyone's hearts thudded. Could Jing Meng have actually gotten it right?

Jenny's expression became increasingly ugly.

Jing Meng displayed the newly assembled design to the crowd. "As you can see, the reason this design drawing couldn't be produced was because of its core."

Enlarging the drawing on the screen, Jing Meng pointed to the middle section. "This robot has more than one core!"

A wave of shock swept through the hall.

It was common knowledge that a robot had only one core.

Old Master Pei's eyes, which were usually as calm as a still well, finally rippled with emotion. "Miss Jing, are you certain?"

Jing Meng looked up and met his gaze firmly. "I am certain!"

She had seen this design drawing in her past life. Back then, it had taken her and her team an entire year of research to finally solve the riddle.

That had also been her own bold attempt the first time anyone had proposed that a robot could have more than one core.

"Pei Heng!" Old Master Pei called out in a low voice. Immediately, a member of the Pei family stepped forward to take the design from Jing Meng.

It seemed the Old Master intended to have it manufactured right then and there!

Pei Shiyi walked to Jing Meng's side and wrapped her slightly cold hand in his broad, warm palm. "Don't worry. Believe in yourself, and..."

He looked back at her with a slight smile that seemed to warm her very soul.

"Believe in me."

Jing Meng subconsciously squeezed Pei Shiyi's hand back. As they walked down the stairs side-by-side, she gave him a confident smile. "Pei Shiyi, in my professional field, no one can question me."

Watching her radiant smile, the curve of Pei Shiyi's lips deepened. "Jing Meng."

Jing Meng looked up at him in surprise. This was the first time in a long while that he had called her by her full name.

"Has anyone ever told you that you are very special?" It felt as if an electric current had surged through her entire body, making her heart pound uncontrollably. Jing Meng turned red from her neck to the tips of her ears.

Only when she turned to leave did she realize that their fingers were still interlaced. Her face grew even redder, and she shook off his hand, wanting to flee.

"Don't be in such a hurry to leave, girl. Wait here for the news first."

Old Master Pei had a fairly good impression of Jing Meng. In all these years, he had never been wrong about a person. A daughter-in-law of the Pei family needed to have courage and means someone who could suppress those petty people looking to climb the social ladder. However, a woman who was too aggressive or restless wouldn't suit the Pei family either.

Jing Meng was just right. She wasn't overly sharp, yet she conducted herself with such poise that no one would dare to look down on her.

His Little Sixth certainly knew how to pick them!

Jing Meng knew that the Old Master was giving her a way out of her embarrassment. Besides, since she had to wait for the results anyway, she followed the opening he gave her and stood obediently behind him.

Pei Shiyi watched her "fleeing" and found it quite amusing.

He hadn't expected that Jing Meng, who remained calm and unruffled before a crowd, would become so flustered and panicked because of a single sentence from him.

Watching the two of them flirt, Jenny's anger flared, and the resentment in her heart deepened.

Suddenly, a comment someone had made in passing flashed through her mind. Jenny's eyes lit up, and she shot Jing Meng a provocative look, a triumphant smile appearing on her face.

"Madame..." Jenny quietly leaned toward Old Madame Pei and whispered the information she had just remembered.

"What did you say?" Old Madame Pei's expression shifted. "Is there evidence?"

Seeing that Old Madame Pei believed her, Jenny felt a surge of joy. "Many people saw it at the time. Even Young Master Gong was present. If you don't believe me, Madame, why don't you ask Young Master Gong himself?"

Jenny was the daughter-in-law she favored, so the Madame knew that Jenny wouldn't speak so certainly without proof.

It seemed that this woman, Jing Meng, was completely unfit to be a daughter-in-law of the Pei family.

"Old Master!" Just as Old Madame Pei was about to stand up and walk toward Jing Meng, Pei Heng suddenly pushed the door open and rushed in.

Everyone's eyes immediately fell on him.

This was the first time they had seen a member of the Pei family lose their composure, and their hearts tightened in anticipation.

Old Master Pei had also never seen Pei Heng so agitated. He frowned, his aura suddenly becoming sharp. "Pei Heng!"

Pei Heng finally seemed to snap out of it and looked at the Old Master, but just as he was about to speak, he saw Jing Meng standing behind the old man.

"The blueprints..."

Pei Heng's simple words made the massive hall go so silent that one could hear a pin drop. Even Old Madame Pei turned her attention back to the blueprints.

If Jing Meng wasn't wrong...
