Chapter 15 – The Moment We Lost Her
The OR doors opened slowly, almost silently.
The lead surgeon stepped out first. His face was grave, lips pressed into a thin line. Every person in the waiting room froze mid-breath.
He held up his hand gently. "I'm… I'm so sorry," he said, voice low but carrying the weight of finality. "We did everything we could… but… Care did not survive the surgery."
Time stopped.
Cole's POV
I didn't hear anything else. My knees buckled. I stumbled backward, hitting the wall.
"No… no, no, no!" I screamed, voice cracking. My hands clawed at my hair. I couldn't breathe.
Everything—her laughter, her smile, the way she had held my hand in the car, the last kiss—everything flashed like a cruel film. I felt the world shatter inside me.
I collapsed onto the floor, hands trembling, face buried. "Care… my Care… you promised… you promised me…"
I couldn't stop sobbing. Each breath was a knife. My soul was torn into a million pieces, screaming silently into the sterile air.
Ash's POV
I ran forward, trying to grab him, but I couldn't. My heart was breaking in ways I didn't know were possible.
"No… no… this can't be real," I whispered, my voice cracking as I sank to my knees beside Cole. "She can't… she was supposed to fight. She was supposed to be here. She… my soul sister… she can't…"
My hands trembled violently. I screamed, a raw, guttural sound that seemed to echo through the hospital walls. "Care! CARE! I am here! I am here!"
Tears blurred my vision. I felt empty, hollow, shattered. The girl who had been my anchor, my other half, my constant… gone. And I couldn't hold her. I couldn't save her.
Lyra's POV
I was frozen, staring at the floor, unable to comprehend. The words… the words "Care did not survive"—it didn't compute. My lungs burned. My vision swam with tears.
"She… she was supposed to live. She… she can't… she can't be gone…" I whispered, voice trembling into nothingness.
I sank into a chair, hugging my knees, rocking back and forth. Every memory of Care—the calls, the letters, the laughter, the hugs—were now sharp, like shards of glass piercing my chest.
I couldn't move, couldn't speak. I only cried, unrelenting, letting the grief swallow me whole.
Nova's POV
I felt my stomach drop. The air seemed to vanish. I couldn't breathe. My hands were frozen, my body rigid. I had kept her safe all these months, protected her from stress… and now she was gone.
"No…" I whispered, shaking my head violently. "No, Care… no… you were supposed to fight. You promised me. You… you can't leave me like this…"
My knees gave out. I collapsed forward onto the chair, curling in on myself. The world had no color. No sound. Just the empty, crushing weight of loss.
All those nights we had spent together, all the battles we had fought… gone.
Ben's POV
I couldn't even process the words. My little sister… gone. My heart stopped, then shattered.
I fell to the ground, face pressed into the cold hospital floor, screaming silently. "No! NO! Care… don't leave me! I can't… I can't live without you…"
I could feel the hollowness spreading through me, the unbearable emptiness. The girl I had always promised to protect, the one I had called my little sister… she was gone.
I couldn't stand, couldn't think. Only one thought repeated: she's gone. She's gone. She's gone.
Daisy's POV
I felt my knees buckle, hands shaking uncontrollably. My throat ached, and I couldn't speak. She… she was strong… invincible in our eyes… and now… nothing.
I sank to the floor, tears streaming. "Care… my friend…my… my sister…"
I thought of all the times I had doubted her, envied her, underestimated her. And now, I wished I had told her more, hugged her more, laughed with her more. I had missed my chance.
And now she was gone.
Author's POV
The room was suffocating. Six people broken, shattered, their lives splintered. Grief hung like a thick fog, every heartbeat echoing loss. Nurses whispered quietly, unsure how to console the wreckage of souls before them. The lead surgeon stood silently, noting the shattered faces, the agony in their eyes.
Inside the OR, the clipboard still held the precise time of death. It was recorded, factual, cold—but outside, the world of friends and family only felt the raw, burning pain. The air was filled with sobs, wails, and quiet, haunted whispers of disbelief.
Time moved slowly. Moments stretched into eternity. Six people sat or collapsed, consumed by grief, unable to comprehend that the girl they had loved, fought with, laughed with, and relied upon… was gone.
