Chapter 64 — Nine Hours Between Life and Death
The hospital corridors smelled sharply of antiseptic and cold steel.
Bright white lights reflected off the polished floors as the emergency doors burst open.
Two stretchers rushed through the entrance.
One carried Lyra.
The other carried Ash.
Everything moved at terrifying speed.
Doctors shouted instructions.
Nurses pushed equipment.
Monitors beeped loudly.
The entire hospital floor suddenly felt like a battlefield.
---
Emergency Hallway
Alex ran beside Lyra's stretcher, his hands still covered in her blood.
"Her pulse is dropping!" one nurse shouted.
"Get the surgical team ready immediately!"
Cole was already walking beside the stretcher, his voice sharp and controlled.
"Bullet wound left side, heavy blood loss. She's been bleeding for almost forty minutes."
Nova appeared beside him instantly.
"Blood pressure?"
"Dangerously low," Cin answered while checking the monitor.
Ben looked at the scan results appearing on the portable tablet.
"The bullet is still inside."
Nova's face hardened.
"Straight to surgery."
The stretcher disappeared behind the Operation Theater doors.
The red light above the door switched on.
SURGERY IN PROGRESS
The doors closed.
And suddenly the hallway went silent.
---
Waiting Room
The group stood frozen.
Twenty minutes ago they were fighting on a cliff.
Now they were standing in a hospital watching one of their own fight for her life.
Alex didn't sit.
He couldn't.
He stood staring at the operation theater doors as if he could force them to open.
His hands were shaking.
JJ quietly placed a hand on his shoulder.
"Lyra is strong," she said softly.
Alex didn't answer.
Because right now… strength didn't matter.
A bullet had torn through her body.
Across the room, Care sat beside Ash's hospital bed.
Ash was still unconscious.
Her face pale.
The drug still heavy in her bloodstream.
Daisy checked the IV line carefully.
"She's stable," Daisy said quietly.
"Her body is still flushing the drug out."
Ben had quickly examined her earlier before joining the surgery.
"She'll wake up soon."
Care gently brushed Ash's hair away from her face.
For the first time since the cliff…
Care looked exhausted.
Cole's jacket was still around her shoulders.
The asthma attack earlier had drained her.
But she refused to leave Ash's side.
Not now.
Not after everything.
Across the room…
Keifer stood near the window.
Silent.
Observing everyone.
Aries leaned against the wall beside him.
"She'll make it," Aries said quietly.
Keifer didn't respond immediately.
His eyes remained on the surgery light.
Nine hours could mean everything.
Or nothing.
Finally he said quietly,
"They're the best surgeons in this building."
Aries nodded slowly.
"Good thing four of them are inside that room."
---
Inside the Operation Theater
The room was filled with bright surgical lights.
Lyra lay motionless on the table.
Machines surrounded her.
Her heartbeat echoed through the room.
Weak.
Unstable.
Nova stood at the center of the table.
Her voice calm but firm.
"Scalpel."
Cole handed it to her immediately.
Cin monitored the vitals screen carefully.
"Blood pressure dropping again."
Ben inserted another transfusion line.
"Second blood unit going in."
Nova carefully made the incision.
The room was silent except for machines.
And breathing masks.
Sweat gathered at Cole's forehead.
He had treated hundreds of patients before.
But this was different.
Lyra wasn't just a patient.
She was family.
Nova carefully reached the bullet path.
Her expression darkened.
"It's worse than we thought."
Ben looked at the screen.
"The bullet fragmented."
Cin cursed quietly.
"Small pieces inside the artery."
Cole's voice sharpened.
"That explains the bleeding."
Nova didn't stop.
"Forceps."
Cole passed the instrument.
One fragment came out.
Then another.
But the bleeding didn't stop.
Cin looked at the monitor again.
"Her heart rate is crashing."
Ben tightened his jaw.
"Come on Lyra… stay with us."
Nova worked faster.
Her hands steady despite the pressure.
One wrong movement now…
And Lyra could die on that table.
Minutes passed.
Then hours.
Three hours.
Five hours.
Seven hours.
The room grew heavier with exhaustion.
Cole wiped sweat from his forehead.
Cin adjusted the monitors again.
"Bleeding slowing."
Nova finally removed the final fragment.
"Got it."
Ben immediately began sealing the artery.
"Stitching now."
Cole watched the monitor.
Heart rate slowly rising.
Nova stepped back slightly.
"Come on Lyra…"
The monitor beeped.
Then again.
Then stronger.
Cin exhaled slowly.
"She's stabilizing."
But Nova didn't relax yet.
"Finish the closure."
Two more hours passed.
Every stitch precise.
Every movement careful.
Finally…
Nine hours after the surgery began—
Nova removed her gloves.
"She's out of danger."
---
Waiting Room — Hour One
Ash's eyes slowly opened.
The ceiling above her was unfamiliar.
Hospital lights.
White walls.
The memory returned instantly.
Kevin.
The cliff.
Lyra falling.
Ash shot up suddenly.
Her head spun violently.
The IV line pulled tight.
"Care!"
Her voice cracked.
Care stood instantly.
"Ash, calm down—"
"Lyra!"
Ash tried to get out of the bed.
Daisy rushed over.
"You're still recovering—"
Ash shook her head desperately.
"No! Lyra— she got shot because of me!"
Her voice broke.
Tears spilled down her face.
Care caught her before she could fall.
"Ash, listen to me."
Ash's breathing became uneven.
"I trusted him… I brought him into the group…"
Her voice shook violently.
"If I hadn't loved him… none of this would have happened…"
Care pulled her into a tight hug.
"No."
Ash looked up at her.
Care's voice was calm.
But firm.
"This was Kevin's choice."
Ash's tears fell faster.
"I still loved him…"
Her voice cracked again.
"And he used me."
Care held her tighter.
"Love doesn't make you weak."
Ash whispered softly,
"But it made me blind."
Care didn't deny it.
Because sometimes…
Love did that.
Across the room…
Alex was still standing.
Still staring at the surgery doors.
Still waiting.
---
Nine Hours Later
The operation theater doors finally opened.
Nova stepped out first.
Her surgical cap still on.
Her face exhausted.
The entire waiting room stood instantly.
Alex walked forward slowly.
His voice barely above a whisper.
"Lyra…?"
Nova looked at him.
Then she smiled softly.
"She's alive."
The entire room exhaled.
Relief hit like a wave.
Alex's knees nearly gave out.
He grabbed the wall beside him.
Nova continued gently,
"The surgery was difficult… but we stopped the bleeding."
"She'll need time to recover."
"But she's going to live."
For the first time since the cliff…
The group finally allowed themselves to breathe.
Care closed her eyes in relief.
Ash began crying again.
But this time…
Those tears carried hope.
And somewhere far away…
Kevin Patel sat inside a prison cell.
Unaware that the people he tried to destroy…
Had survived.
Together.
Stronger than ever.
