Chapter 15 - When Destiny Becomes a Threat

Victor Hale never rushed a discovery.

He preferred to watch a mystery unfold slowly, pulling at one thread at a time and observing how people reacted when they believed no one was paying attention. It was a method that had served him well in business and in life.

Tonight, the most interesting reaction in the ballroom had nothing to do with investments or alliances.

It was the tension between Kendrick Walker and an omega who was supposed to be invisible.

Victor stepped closer, his polished shoes quiet against the marble floor.

"Well," he said smoothly, glancing between them. "This is becoming a pattern."

Damian stiffened slightly.

Kendrick's expression hardened.

Neither man looked pleased to see him again.

Victor's smile returned, faint but satisfied.

"That makes twice now I've found the two of you standing alone together," he continued.

His gaze settled on Damian.

"For someone working in catering, you certainly have impressive connections."

Damian tightened his grip on the tray.

"I am just doing my job."

Victor let out a quiet laugh.

"Of course you are."

His eyes narrowed as he studied Damian more carefully. The suppressor patch remained in place, but Victor could tell it was working harder than before. A faint trace of scent lingered in the air, subtle yet distinct.

Unusual.

Victor leaned slightly closer. Not enough to touch, but close enough to observe the reaction.

Damian instinctively stepped back.

Victor noticed immediately.

"There it is again," he said softly.

Damian's pulse jumped.

"I do not know what you mean."

Victor's gaze sharpened.

"That scent."

The words landed with quiet force.

Before Damian could respond, Kendrick spoke.

"Victor."

The single word carried a clear warning.

Victor turned toward him slowly.

"Yes?"

Kendrick's voice remained calm.

"You are making my staff uncomfortable."

Victor raised an eyebrow.

"Your staff?"

The emphasis was deliberate.

Kendrick did not react.

"He is working at my event."

Victor chuckled softly.

"Ownership by proximity. Interesting."

He took a slow sip from the champagne glass in his hand.

"But I am only asking questions."

Damian finally spoke again.

"I am not sure what questions you think I can answer."

Victor turned back toward him.

"You would be surprised."

He shifted slightly, circling the conversation with measured patience.

"You are not from any omega family I recognize."

Damian remained silent.

Victor continued calmly.

"And yet your scent is different."

Kendrick's jaw tightened.

"Victor."

Victor lifted one hand in a casual gesture.

"I am curious. That is all."

His attention returned to Damian.

"Where are you from?"

Damian answered carefully.

"Here."

Victor smiled.

"That is not what I meant."

The tension thickened.

Nearby guests began to sense the change in atmosphere. Several people glanced toward the small group. Nothing dramatic had happened, yet the stillness carried a quiet intensity.

Across the ballroom, Alehandra Peters noticed the shift as well.

She had been speaking with a political donor when her attention drifted toward the tall windows. Her eyes narrowed slightly as she recognized the familiar pattern.

Kendrick.

Victor.

And the omega again.

Alehandra excused herself smoothly and began walking toward them.

Meanwhile, Victor continued his quiet interrogation.

"You are a male omega," he said thoughtfully.

Damian's shoulders stiffened.

"That is not illegal."

"Of course not," Victor replied.

His smile remained steady.

"But it is uncommon."

He leaned slightly closer again.

"And uncommon things attract attention."

Damian felt irritation begin to surface.

"I did not come here for attention."

Victor laughed softly.

"And yet you have it."

Kendrick stepped forward slightly, placing himself more directly between them.

The movement was subtle.

But unmistakable.

Victor noticed immediately.

His eyes flicked between the two men.

Then his smile deepened.

"Well. Now this is fascinating."

Kendrick's voice lowered.

"You have asked enough questions."

Victor tilted his head.

"Have I?"

His gaze shifted briefly toward Damian.

"I feel like I have only started."

Damian looked between the two alphas, unease tightening in his chest. The tension between them had grown sharper, and the worst part was that people nearby were beginning to notice.

If this turned into a scene, the event organizers would start asking questions.

And Damian could not afford that.

"I should get back to work," he said quietly.

He stepped to the side.

Victor did not stop him this time.

But his eyes followed Damian carefully as the omega moved back into the crowd.

After a moment, Victor turned toward Kendrick again.

"You are protective tonight."

Kendrick's expression remained unreadable.

"I do not enjoy watching you harass staff."

Victor laughed.

"Is that what you call it?"

He leaned slightly closer.

"Because it looked very much like you were protecting him."

Kendrick said nothing.

Victor studied him carefully.

Then his voice dropped.

"You smell it too."

The statement settled heavily between them.

Kendrick's gaze sharpened.

Victor smiled knowingly.

"I wondered."

Kendrick's tone remained flat.

"You are imagining things."

Victor shook his head slightly.

"No."

He glanced across the ballroom toward the omega moving between tables again.

"I am very good at recognizing instinct when I see it."

Kendrick's silence gave him confirmation.

Victor leaned back casually.

"Well," he said, almost cheerfully, "this evening just became far more interesting."

Alehandra arrived beside Kendrick at that moment.

Her gaze moved quickly between the two men.

"What did I miss?"

Victor greeted her politely.

"Only a fascinating conversation."

Alehandra's eyes flicked toward Damian in the distance, then returned to Kendrick.

Understanding settled instantly.

And she did not look pleased.

Victor placed his empty glass on a nearby table.

Then he turned toward Kendrick once more.

"You know," he said lightly, "if I did not know better…"

He paused.

His smile sharpened.

"I would think your instincts were reacting to him."

Alehandra's gaze snapped toward Kendrick.

The silence that followed felt heavy.

Victor gave them both an amused look.

"Do not worry," he added casually.

"I will not say anything."

He began walking away.

Then paused.

And looked back over his shoulder.

"Not yet."

Victor disappeared into the crowd.

Leaving Kendrick and Alehandra standing in tense silence.

After several seconds, Alehandra spoke quietly.

"Tell me he is wrong."

Kendrick looked across the ballroom again.

Toward the omega moving carefully between tables, trying to remain unnoticed.

For the first time that night, he could not answer immediately.

Because something deep within his instincts had already begun whispering a dangerous possibility.

If Victor Hale was right, then Damian Roberts was not simply an omega with an unusual scent.

He might be something far more disruptive.

Something capable of breaking the carefully controlled life Kendrick had spent years building.
