Chapter 228 - Chapter 228: Kang the Monitor

The violently distorted, jagged state of Giant-Venom lasted for less than three minutes before the transformation broke.

Shrinking back down to his standard, three-meter-tall physique, Venom patted his massive chest in sheer disbelief. He looked down at the blood-red spider emblem that Knull's cosmic will had forcibly painted across his torso. With a low rumble of disgust, the symbiote willed the alien pigment to shift, turning the iconic jagged spider back to a brilliant, pure white.

Doctor Strange, still hovering nearby with the Cloak of Levitation, opened his mouth to ask a question, but Thor beat him to it.

"Is it finished?" the Thunder God asked, his grip tight on Mjolnir.

"Oh, yeah. Give us a minute," Venom's deep, booming voice echoed across the rooftop. "SPIDER-MAN REFUSED THE THRONE. HE EXTINGUISHED KNULL'S LOCALIZED CONSCIOUSNESS. THE KING IN BLACK CANNOT BE RESURRECTED NOW UNLESS EITHER PETER OR MYSELF PERISHES."

Venom rolled his massive shoulders. Suddenly, a pair of colossal, leathery black dragon wings erupted from his back. He didn't stop there—he proudly showcased his newly assimilated abilities. Having consumed Grendel's Codex, Venom had inherited the dragon's traits, along with the shape-shifting arsenal he'd stolen from Riot. His right arm rapidly morphed into a massive, jagged broadsword, then a heavy mace, and finally dissolved entirely into a puddle of liquid sludge that rapidly moved across the floor before reforming.

"I CAN FINALLY PROVIDE SPIDER-MAN WITH SOME ACTUAL FIREPOWER," Venom rumbled joyfully.

To demonstrate, the massive symbiote completely liquefied, burrowing seamlessly into the concrete rooftop. It moved invisibly through the building's infrastructure, passing entirely through a solid brick wall before "seeping" out the other side with a triumphant, monstrous shout.

Thor and Strange simply stared at the alien in total, bewildered silence.

Realizing he was aggressively showing off in front of two incredibly powerful magical beings, Venom sheepishly retracted his wings and weapons. The black sludge rapidly dissolved, receding into Spider-Man pores and leaving the teenager standing there in his brand-new, classic red-and-blue suit.

"Sorry about that, guys," Peter chuckled, rubbing the back of his neck. "He's getting a little excited with the new upgrades. But yeah... it should all be over now."

Right on cue, the apocalyptic tidal wave of black sludge flooding the streets of Manhattan froze.

Without Knull's consciousness directing the hive-mind, the parasitic biomass rapidly destabilized. The inky black slime turned a sickly, grayish-white, hardening from a viscous liquid into brittle, solid ash. A strong gust of wind swept through the city canyons, blowing the alien ash away like dust.

All across the city, the corrupted heroes collapsed. They all hit the pavement, gasping for air and looking around in absolute, horrified confusion. But as they looked up and saw Thor, Strange, and Spider-Man standing victorious on the skyline, the reality slowly washed over them.

The crisis was over.

From the evening of October 31st to the afternoon of November 1st, the symbiote frenzy triggered by the King in Black had finally ended. The Avengers had protected the Earth, exactly as they always did. They would clean up the battlefield, bury their dead, and return to their lives. And the cosmic forces monitoring this timeline would shift their attention elsewhere.

With one terrifying exception.

"Rewind the timeline to temporal marker 2012-11-01, 06:37 AM."

A man clad in advanced, gleaming purple and green chronal-armor sat upon a massive throne in the center of a sleek, futuristic warship floating outside the boundaries of normal space-time.

Before him, a massive holographic projection flared to life. It displayed the damp, subterranean sewer laboratory of Doctor Otto Octavius.

Kang the Conqueror watched quietly as the timeline played out.

On the projection, Otto was frantically studying a dormant symbiote sample he had collected from the streets. He was desperate.

Kang dragged a glowing progress bar floating in the air, fast-forwarding the hologram.

He watched as the exact moment Knull's consciousness was sealed by Peter Parker rippled across the timeline. The symbiote sample on Otto's desk began to turn to ash. In a panic, Otto reached out with his bare hand, grabbing the dying alien sludge.

Because Knull's hive-mind had just been eradicated, the symbiote was left a complete, mindless blank slate. Otto's surgically enhanced, hyper-advanced nervous system successfully established a perfect, dominant connection with the parasite. A sleek, biomechanical suit—unique to Otto Octavius and entirely devoid of an independent alien consciousness—bonded to his spine, repairing his damaged nerves.

For the first time in years, Doctor Octopus stood up and walked.

The birth of the Superior Octopus.

Kang's expression remained entirely flat behind his blue visor. This was an interesting localized variance, but it was not the anomaly he was searching for.

"Rewind the timeline to 2012-11-01, 09:11 AM."

The hologram shifted. Kang watched the street-level Defenders fighting through Hell's Kitchen. They were protecting a man named Martin Li. When Li activated his unique, negative-light abilities, the energy instantly obliterated the symbiote minions, freeing the trapped civilians inside. The Defenders, believing Mister Negative was the key to turning the tide, were desperately trying to escort him to the Sanctum.

Like Doctor Octopus, Martin Li's destiny was deeply intertwined with Spider-Man's. But Kang shook his head. Martin Li's timeline was remarkably stable. He wasn't the target.

Kang swiped his hand, jumping the timeline back to 4:00 AM.

The hologram showed a heavily fortified gang hideout belonging to Tombstone. Because the mobsters were all out on the streets acting as symbiote generals, the vault was completely unguarded. A lithe, highly skilled thief clad in black leather had broken into the finance office, casually stealing millions in untraceable cartel money and blackmail files.

The Black Cat was using the apocalypse to get rich.

"Irrelevant," Kang muttered, dismissing the hologram of Felicia Hardy.

Kang leaned back against his throne, the glowing blue circuitry of his ship humming in the absolute silence of the temporal void.

"Great Kang," a heavily armored chronal-centurion approached the throne, bowing deeply. "You have lingered extensively on this specific primitive cycle. Have you located the primary variance?"

Kang the Conqueror was the undisputed emperor of the 31st Century. He was the most powerful time traveler in existence, possessing the unique, terrifying ability to violently alter history without creating branching, splintered timelines. But recently, he had been deploying his most elite Chrono-Legions to repeatedly scour Earth's timeline immediately following the year 2012.

He was hunting a ghost.

"No," Kang replied, his voice a cold, synthesized baritone. "Spider-Man is not the anomaly responsible for the Multiversal Incursion Crisis. At least, not yet. He was bitten by the spdier three years earlier than the sacred continuity dictates, but his overall impact on the macro-timeline is not as volatile as Steve Rogers'."

Kang turned his wrist over. The heavy, gold-plated armor of his gauntlet opened, revealing the glowing, emerald-green brilliance of the Time Stone.

Kang stared into the swirling green depths of the Infinity Stone. "I have thoroughly investigated the anomalous temporal signatures surrounding both Captain America and Spider-Man. Their energy spectra do not match the catastrophic space-time distortion recorded in the year 2015."

In the year 2015, a terrifying, irreversible catastrophe was destined to strike Earth-616. The sacred continuity of the timeline would be violently torn apart. This localized destruction would destabilize the space-time structure of the entire Multiverse, triggering a chain reaction of planetary collisions—Incursions. Earths from different realities would smash into one another, wiping out entire universes until nothing was left.

Even more terrifying to the Conqueror? Due to the sheer, apocalyptic tearing of the space-time continuum during that event, no chronal-technology or time traveler could physically penetrate the year 2015. It was a temporal dead zone.

If this cascading collapse was not stopped, Kang's glorious, multiversal empire would be erased from existence. As an Emperor, Kang would not tolerate this. He was using the Time Stone to map the timeline, desperately searching for the root cause so he could prune it before the Incursions began.

"Where does the chronal-tracker predict the next major temporal anomaly will occur?" Kang demanded, looking down at his lieutenant.

"November 13th, 2012, Great Kang," the centurion reported.

Kang the Conqueror leaned back in his throne, his blue visor narrowing as he calculated his next move.
