The gold light rising from beneath the nexus did not calm the battlefield.
It shattered it.
The moment the second authority pulse hit the basin, the Nexus Arbiter's red and blue route lines flickered violently across every level of the broken structure. Hard-light lanes bent out of alignment. Execution zones snapped open and shut. Support bridges screamed as old command logic collided with something deeper and older below.
Then the hunters panicked.
Good.
Kai Ren saw it instantly.
The ones who had still held discipline through the Arbiter's judgments finally broke. Some turned their weapons toward the basin heart. Some toward the nearest blue lane. Some toward the route defenders they had been trying to kill only seconds earlier. Fear spread through them faster than orders could.
The system responded at once.
Battlefield instability increasing
Hostile formation integrity: collapsing
Kai smiled.
This was the kind of chaos he could use.
Veya shouted something sharp from the east bridge, but this time Kai didn't wait to hear the full command. He had already seen the shape of the fight. The hunters weren't one force anymore. They were scattered targets standing inside a machine-war between dead route authority and rising gold law.
Perfect hunting ground.
A hunter in white-gray armor tried to sprint across a flickering transfer lane toward the outer spur. The blue line beneath his feet died halfway through the run.
He fell.
The red lattice below rose like teeth.
Kai moved before the machine finished him.
He launched off a broken support rib, hit the falling man in midair, and drove both of them sideways into a lower maintenance platform just outside the red kill zone. The impact knocked the breath out of the hunter and sent his weapon skidding into the fog.
Kai didn't give him a second chance.
He grabbed the front of the man's armor and smashed his head into the platform once. Twice. On the third strike, the visor cracked and blood spread across the inside.
The system flashed.

Gene energy detected
There it was.
Finally.
Kai put one hand over the dying hunter's chest.
"Devour."
The body convulsed once, then dissolved into threads of pale energy that flowed into Kai's arm and vanished beneath his skin. The sensation was weaker than devouring Rift beasts, but cleaner than expected. Adapted gene traces. Combat enhancement. Environmental tolerance. Thin, but useful.
The system updated immediately.

Good.
Not enough.
He looked up.
There were still targets everywhere.
A route defender on an upper platform got hit in the thigh and dropped behind cover, while two hunters tried to push through a wavering side lane toward the central ring. One carried a compact heavy pistol. The other had a crystal-edged short spear and moved like a trained close-range killer.
Kai ran toward them.
The spear-user saw him first and reacted correctly. Instead of charging, he shifted aside to flank while the pistol user fired center mass.
Kai twisted through the first shot.
The second clipped his shoulder.
The third would have hit his throat if he had still been the Kai from Helios.
He wasn't.
The new node-sense and sharpened reflexes caught the movement a fraction early. He stepped inside the firing rhythm and slammed the route shard straight through the pistol's slide and the shooter's hand at the same time.
The man screamed.
Kai tore the weapon down, twisted, and used the trapped arm to drag the hunter into the path of the spear-user's thrust.
The crystal-edged point punched through his ally's side.
Bad team coordination.
Worse luck.
Kai moved in.
He caught the spear shaft with both hands, drove Titan Strength through his arms, and snapped the weapon in half. The second hunter let go instantly and reached for a blade under his coat.
Good instinct.
Too slow.
Kai drove his forehead into the man's nose hard enough to flatten it, then buried the broken spear point under the jaw and shoved upward.
The body jerked once and fell.
The wounded pistol user tried to crawl away.
Kai stepped on his back.
"Who sent you?"
The man coughed blood and laughed once. "You're worth more alive."
That answered enough.
Helix.
Or someone paying Helix-grade money.
Kai put a hand between the man's shoulder blades.
"Devour."
The hunter's body dissolved.
The system responded fast.

Better.
A lot better.
And around the basin, people were starting to notice.
One of the route fighters on the bridge above actually stopped staring at the gold light below and looked directly at him as the second body dissolved into his hand. Another shouted something to Veya. This time the system caught enough.
Approximate meaning:
"He eats them!"
Good.
Let them talk.
Fear and rumor were faster than introductions.
A new system prompt appeared.
Temporary Battlefield Reputation Shift Detected
Local status: Unknown Hunter / Red-Zone Feeder
Kai almost laughed.
That was ugly.
He liked it.
Then the real threat arrived.
Three hunters in heavier armor dropped from the west gantry together, using rappel lines to bypass the unstable route lanes. Not panicked. Not broken. Command squad. One carried a folding shield emitter. One had a long rifle with a crystal rail mounted beneath the barrel. The last one wore no obvious heavy weapon at all, but the way he moved told Kai enough.
Close-combat specialist.
The system immediately tagged them.

There.
That was what he wanted.
Real prey.
The Enforcer looked straight at him, then at the two dissolved blood-smears on the lower platform, and the man's posture changed.
Recognition.
Not of who Kai was.
Of what he was doing.
The Enforcer raised one hand and signaled something sharp to the other two.
Containment formation.
They weren't trying to kill him first.
They were trying to box him.
Helix definitely.
Kai stepped off the lower platform and into a half-lit route lane as the marksman took the first shot. The crystal round hit the old floor beside his foot and blew a crater into the metal. The breacher advanced behind the folding shield emitter, creating moving cover while the Enforcer cut wide right to trap him against the red sectors still flickering around the central basin.
Good plan.
Kai ruined it.
He sprinted left instead of back, using the unstable route lines as bait. The marksman adjusted and fired again. Kai dropped low and let the shot pass overhead into a damaged support panel.
The panel collapsed.
A whole section of old signal conduit crashed down between him and the breacher, forcing the shield carrier to slow.
The Enforcer came faster.
The man moved like he belonged in close kills. No wasted steps. No flashy angles. One short blade in each hand, both black and matte except for the faint crystal edge hidden along the inside curve.
Kai grinned.
Now they were speaking the same language.
The Enforcer struck first.
Left blade low.
Right blade for the throat.
Kai caught the rhythm and met it head-on. He twisted past the low cut, trapped the right wrist, and drove his elbow into the man's chest hard enough to crack armor.
The Enforcer didn't stagger.
Good.
Instead he rotated with the impact and cut backward at Kai's ribs.
Kai barely pulled away in time. The blade still sliced cloth and skin.
Pain flashed.
The system responded instantly.
Host damage detected
Bleeding: moderate
The Enforcer smiled behind his half-mask.
Wrong move.
Kai lunged in before the man could capitalize. No weapons. No tricks. Just raw close violence. Palm strike to the jaw. Knee to the thigh joint. Titan Strength through the shoulder into the sternum. The Enforcer blocked two, absorbed one, slipped the fourth, and answered with a blade-line that would have opened Kai from hip to chest if the recovered third had not warned him a split second early.
Kai pivoted inside the cut and drove both hands into the Enforcer's knife arm.
Bone cracked.
The blade dropped.
The marksman fired.
Kai dragged the Enforcer into the shot.
The crystal round tore through the man's side and blasted out in a spray of blood and armor fragments.
The Enforcer made one raw animal sound.
Then Kai drove the route shard through the man's exposed throat.
The body dropped.
The system flashed hard.

Devour recommended
Kai put a hand on the dying man's chest immediately.
"Devour."
This time the energy surge hit harder.
Much harder.
The Enforcer's body dissolved into a thicker stream of force that rushed into Kai's arm and spread through his chest, spine, and limbs in hot snapping lines. His muscles tightened. His senses sharpened. A harder, cleaner combat instinct slotted into place beneath the existing structure.
The system exploded into updates.

Yes.
Now they were getting somewhere.
The breacher saw it happen.
He actually stopped for half a heartbeat behind the shield, watching the body dissolve into Kai.
Good.
Fear.
That was useful too.
The marksman did not stop. Professional. He shifted angle and fired through the gap between support ribs.
Kai caught the line, stepped aside, and threw the dead Enforcer's dropped blade.
The marksman flinched.
Not enough.
The blade punched through the rifle's crystal rail and detonated it in the shooter's hands.
The man screamed and dropped the weapon.
Kai was already moving.
The breacher tried to cut him off with the shield emitter, angling the field to trap him against a re-forming red zone. Smart.
Kai slammed Sovereign Pressure into the shield.
The field rippled.
He hit it again.
Not to break it.
To misalign it.
The old route lines around them reacted violently to the interference. The shield field twisted just enough that one edge drifted into the red execution sector.
The route judged first.
A clean white line dropped through the shield emitter, the breacher's arm, and half the platform under him.
He vanished in three pieces before he understood the mistake.
The system updated.
Level 3 Surface Breacher eliminated
The marksman tried to run.
Kai sprinted him down in six steps.
The man made it as far as the broken signal rib before Kai hit him from behind and drove him face-first into the old route wall. The marksman bounced once, weakly, then reached for a sidearm with shaking fingers.
Kai grabbed the back of his armor and hauled him upright.
"Who has the contract?"
The marksman spat blood. "You think Helix is the only buyer?"
Interesting.
Important.
Later.
Kai put one hand over the man's chest.
"Devour."
The body dissolved.
The system answered with satisfying brutality.

And there it was.
The whole local battlefield shifted.
The remaining hunters saw three of their best go down in under a minute.
The route defenders saw Kai rip through a Helix-style command squad and devour them in the middle of the fight.
Whatever uncertainty had existed around him in the nexus turned into something sharper now. Not trust. Not yet.
But fear.
Respect.
The useful kind.
The system marked it clearly.
Local battlefield reputation increased
Surface hunter morale dropping
Nexus defender threat assessment changing
Good.
Very good.
Then the basin floor beneath the central ring split wider and the gold light below surged high enough to wash every route line pale.
The Nexus Arbiter's white core flickered.
The old machine turned, slowly, toward the rising gold beneath the basin heart.
And for the first time since it had awakened, it looked uncertain.
Kai stood in the middle of the half-destroyed lane, blood on his hands, fresh gene fragments burning through his body, and looked toward the center.
The battle wasn't over.
But now it finally felt like his kind of chapter again.
