Kael's Seat appeared first as light.
The valley it sat in caught the afternoon sun differently from the eastern terrain. After two weeks of highland and lowland rock, the warm gold of the settlement's stone walls looked almost like something Kai had imagined. He knew the street layouts. He knew which buildings were stone and which were wood and which had been rebuilt since he had first arrived here ten years ago.
He noticed, coming down the main road, that the plants along the verge were taller than he remembered. He noted this. Said nothing.
