Chapter 23 - The Queen's Proposition

The Queen received her in a private audience chamber, smaller and more intimate than the grand throne room where Seraphina had first been presented. The black dragon was absent, which somehow made the space feel both more personal and more dangerous.

"Sit," the Queen commanded, gesturing to a chair across from her own. "You're still recovering."

Seraphina sat, though her new senses told her that recovery was a relative term. She would never be what she was before—the merger had seen to that. But she was strong. Stronger, perhaps, than she had ever been.

"Three weeks," the Queen said, studying her with those red eyes. "Twenty-one days of unconsciousness while your soul adjusted to its new form. The healers tell me they've never seen anything like it."

"I survived."

"You did more than survive. You thrived." The Queen leaned forward. "Do you understand what you've become, Seraphina Vale?"

"A guardian. A bridge between worlds."

"You are that, yes. But you are also something more." The Queen's voice dropped, becoming almost intimate. "You are the first of a new kind. The ultimate bond has been attempted before—always it ended in death, or worse. But you and Pyre succeeded. You merged your souls without losing yourselves."

"What does that mean? Practically, I mean."

"It means you have access to power that no Dragonbound has ever wielded. It means you could, if you chose to, reshape the barrier itself—strengthen it, modify it, perhaps even expand it." The Queen paused. "It means you are now the most powerful being in this kingdom. Perhaps in the world."

Seraphina absorbed this in silence. Power had never been what she wanted—she had simply wanted to survive, to protect, to do what was necessary. But power had been thrust upon her regardless.

"What do you want from me?" she asked finally.

The Queen smiled—a rare expression that transformed her stern features into something almost warm. "I want to offer you a position. A title. A place in the Court of Dragons."

"What kind of position?"

"Dragon Queen."

Seraphina blinked. "What?"

"The title has not been used in three hundred years—not since the last Dragonbound fell. It belongs to the guardian of the barrier, the protector of the covenant between humans and dragons." The Queen's eyes burned into hers. "You have earned that title. And I am offering it to you."

"You want me to be a queen? I'm a fisherman's daughter from Thornhaven. I don't know anything about ruling."

"You know about sacrifice. You know about protection. You know about choosing the hard path when the easy one would destroy everything you love." The Queen leaned back. "Ruling is simply those things, repeated over and over, for the rest of your life."

Seraphina thought about it. Five hundred years of ruling, of responsibility, of being the one everyone looked to in times of crisis. It was terrifying. It was overwhelming.

But it was also... right.

"I would need to learn," she said slowly. "I would need guidance."

"You would have it. Kestrel has trained three Dragonbound—he can help you navigate the political landscape. And I..." The Queen hesitated, something almost vulnerable crossing her features. "I have ruled for three hundred years. I could use a successor. Someone to share the burden."

"Successor?"

"Nothing lasts forever, Seraphina. Not even Dragon Lords. I will not live another three hundred years—my power wanes with each passing decade. And when I am gone, someone will need to guide this kingdom." The Queen met her eyes. "I am asking you to be that someone."

Seraphina felt the weight of the offer settling onto her shoulders—another burden, another responsibility. But this time, she didn't feel crushed by it. She felt... ready.

"I accept," she said. "But on one condition."

"Name it."

"Kestrel stays. As my advisor, my trainer, my..." She hesitated, not sure what word to use. "Whatever he wants to be."

The Queen's smile widened. "I think that can be arranged."

She rose, signaling the end of the audience, but paused before Seraphina could leave.

"One more thing," she said. "The Ash Covenant was not destroyed in the battle. Scattered, yes. Weakened, certainly. But not gone. There will be those who seek to finish what they started—to bring down the barrier, to open the door to the Voidwalkers."

"I know."

"They will come for you specifically. You are the key now—not just to maintaining the barrier, but to everything it protects." The Queen's expression grew serious. "Be careful, Dragon Queen. You have power that others would kill to possess."

"I'll be careful."

But even as she said it, Seraphina knew that careful would never be enough. The world had changed, and she had changed with it. The future would bring challenges she couldn't yet imagine.

But she would face them. She would face them all.

That was what it meant to be a guardian.
