Chapter 29 - Hunt or Be Claimed

After school—

The forest didn't wait.

It never did.

The sky over Beacon Hills was darker than it should've been.

Clouds gathering too fast.

Wind moving wrong.

Like something beneath the town—

Was breathing.

Aiden stood at the same clearing.

Exactly where everything had started shifting.

Still.

Calm.

Waiting.

Scott arrived first.

Breathing slightly heavy.

Nervous energy already kicking in.

"I really hate that this is becoming our meeting spot," he muttered.

Aiden didn't respond.

Next—

Allison.

No hesitation again.

No second thoughts.

She stepped beside Aiden like it was natural now.

Like this was her place.

Scott noticed.

Again.

"Yeah… okay, that's definitely a thing now," he mumbled.

Then—

Footsteps.

Measured.

Unhurried.

Lydia.

Lydia Martin

She didn't look around.

Didn't act cautious.

Because unlike Scott—

She wasn't afraid of the unknown.

She was curious about it.

Her eyes went straight to Aiden.

"Hope we're not late."

Aiden glanced at her.

"You're on time."

That was enough.

She stepped closer.

Not beside Allison.

Not behind Scott.

Closer to him.

Deliberate.

The tension?

Immediate.

Subtle.

But sharp.

Allison felt it.

Her posture shifted slightly.

Not backing down.

Not moving away.

Just… holding her place.

Aiden noticed both of them.

Said nothing.

But his presence—

Shifted.

Heavier.

More dominant.

Like the space itself adjusted around him.

Scott clapped once nervously.

"Okay—great—everyone's here—can we please talk about what's trying to kill us tonight?"

Aiden finally moved.

One step forward.

Then another.

Drawing all attention.

Naturally.

"It's not hunting randomly," he said.

Quiet.

Controlled.

"It's marking territory."

Scott frowned.

"Territory? Like an Alpha?"

Aiden shook his head.

"No."

A pause.

"Something older."

Lydia's interest sharpened instantly.

"Older than werewolves?"

Aiden looked at her.

"Yes."

That hit.

Because Lydia understood what that meant.

Opportunity.

Power.

Knowledge.

Allison crossed her arms slightly.

"And it noticed you."

Not a question.

A statement.

Aiden's eyes flickered faintly.

"It reacted."

Scott groaned.

"Yeah that's not better."

Suddenly—

A sound.

Deep.

Low.

A growl.

Not from one direction.

From everywhere.

The forest shifted.

Branches creaked.

Leaves trembled.

Air thickened.

Scott's claws came out instantly.

"Okay—yeah—that's new—that's definitely new—"

Aiden didn't move.

Didn't turn.

Didn't react.

Because he already knew.

"Don't move," he said.

Too late.

A blur shot through the trees—

Fast.

Too fast.

Scott turned—

Swinging—

Missed.

Something hit him from the side.

Hard.

Sending him crashing into the ground.

"Scott!" Allison shouted.

Another blur—

This time toward Lydia—

But it stopped.

Mid-motion.

Because Aiden moved.

Not rushed.

Not panicked.

Just—

Absolute.

His hand caught the creature by the throat.

Mid-air.

Impact—

The ground cracked beneath them.

Silence.

For the first time—

They saw it clearly.

A wolf.

But wrong.

Eyes glowing deep blue.

Body lean—

But tense with unnatural control.

Not wild.

Not feral.

Disciplined.

It snarled.

Struggled.

Tried to break free.

Failed.

Aiden's grip tightened slightly.

Not enough to crush.

Enough to dominate.

"You shouldn't have come this close," Aiden said.

The creature laughed.

Actually laughed.

"You really don't understand yet," it said.

Voice distorted.

Layered.

Aiden's eyes burned brighter.

"Then explain."

The wolf's grin widened.

"You're not the hunter here."

A pause.

"You're the signal."

That—

Changed everything.

Behind him—

Lydia's expression sharpened instantly.

Processing.

Connecting.

Allison stepped closer.

Instinctively.

Scott pushed himself up.

"What the hell does that mean?!"

The creature's eyes flickered.

Locking onto Aiden.

"They're coming because of you."

Aiden didn't blink.

Didn't react.

But the air—

Shifted.

"Good," he said.

And then—

His flames ignited.

Not small.

Not controlled.

For the first time—

They surged outward.

The wolf screamed.

Not from pain.

From recognition.

"You're—"

CRACK.

The creature was slammed into the ground.

Hard.

The earth split beneath it.

Silence followed.

Heavy.

Final.

Aiden released it.

The wolf didn't move.

Unconscious.

Or worse.

Scott stared.

Wide-eyed.

"…Okay yeah, we're not the main characters anymore."

No one disagreed.

Allison looked at Aiden.

Something deeper in her eyes now.

Not just attraction.

Not just trust.

Claim.

Pull.

Something she couldn't explain.

Lydia stepped closer slowly.

Studying the fallen creature.

Then Aiden.

"You didn't just defend," she said softly.

"You dominated it."

Aiden glanced at her.

"Of course."

She smiled slightly.

"Yeah…" she whispered,

"I'm definitely not staying out of this."

Aiden looked between both girls.

Saw it clearly now.

They weren't stepping back.

They were stepping in.

Exactly what he wanted.

He turned.

Walking deeper into the forest.

"Stay close," he said.

This time—

It wasn't a warning.

It was a command.

And both of them—

Followed.

Behind them—

Scott sighed.

"…I miss when my biggest problem was lacrosse."

No one listened.

Because the hunt had changed.

This wasn't about surviving anymore.

This was about something else.

Something bigger.

Something that was starting to look a lot like—

Aiden building his own world.

And anyone strong enough?

Could either stand beside him.

Or get crushed trying to stand against him.
