The Mark of Pestilence
The revival process restored Daniel Voss to full physical integrity: no wounds, no fatigue, clothing unmarred. Yet something lingered beneath the surface.
As he sat upright on the cot, a faint tremor passed through his left forearm. He turned the limb over. A thin, irregular vein of dull violet-black had appeared just beneath the skin, originating at the point where Mortis Ableson's rapier had grazed him during the final exchange. The mark pulsed once—slow, deliberate—then settled into quiescence.
The interface activated without prompt.
[Anomaly Integration Detected] Source: Gatekeeper Mortis Ableson – Residual Toxin (Class III) Compatibility: Confirmed (Survival System v.17.3) Result: New Passive Branch Unlocked Designation: Pestilence Type 2 Current Level: 1 (0/500 progression points)
Daniel studied the notification. No pain accompanied the mark, only a cool, distant sensation akin to menthol applied internally.
Vannia, already standing beside the cot, noticed his fixed attention. "Interface activity?"
He extended his arm toward her. The violet-black vein was visible even in the outpost's artificial light.
"Residual infection from the rapier," he stated. "The system classified it as an integration rather than damage."
Vannia leaned closer, then straightened. "I have no corresponding mark. The graze must have carried a vector specific to you—perhaps tied to your combat style or the pipe's anomalous modifications."
Lin approached with a handheld scanner. The device emitted a low chime after sweeping the affected area.
"Anomalous bio-signature," she confirmed. "Not bacterial, not viral. Closer to a memetic-parasitic construct. Sanity impact: negligible. Physiological impact: currently dormant."
Daniel queried the system for details.
[Pestilence Type 2 – Level 1] Description: The bearer gains limited dominion over decay vectors derived from Gatekeeper-class entities. Core Effects (Active at Level 1): → Corrosive Touch (Passive): Melee weapons gain 12% increased damage against organic or semi-organic entities. Wounds inflicted resist natural regeneration for 45 seconds. → Blight Aura (Active): Emit a localized decay field (3 m radius, 18-second duration, 4-minute cooldown). Affected entities suffer 1.8% maximum health decay per second. Non-lethal to human wanderers. → Progression: Defeat additional entities while bearing the mark to accumulate points toward Level 2.
Daniel flexed his fingers. No visible change, yet he sensed a subtle shift in the pipe's weight—as though the metal now carried a faint predisposition toward entropy when wielded against living targets.
Elias joined the group, limping slightly despite revival. "Mortis Ableson never leaves gifts. He leaves debts. This mark may be both."
"Or leverage," Daniel replied. "The system does not grant abilities without corresponding utility. The question is calibration."
Vannia crossed her arms. "Test it. Controlled conditions. We have a Hound nest mapped two corridors east—three adults, one juvenile. Low risk for observation."
Daniel stood. The pipe felt incrementally more responsive in his grip, as though attuned to the new vector running through his veins.
"Agreed. Immediate field assessment."
The team mobilized with practiced efficiency: Reyes and another operative providing ranged support with improvised crossbows, Mara updating the tactical map in real time, Lin preparing medical contingencies.
They moved as a unit through the gray corridors. At the nest entrance— a collapsed storage room partially sealed by debris—Daniel signaled a halt.
He stepped forward alone first.
The Hounds sensed him immediately. Three adults rose, growling low; the juvenile hung back.
Daniel raised the pipe in standard guard. The violet-black vein along his forearm brightened fractionally.
He advanced.
The lead Hound lunged. Daniel met it with a precise thrust. The pipe entered beneath the jaw; on withdrawal, the wound edges immediately blackened and began to fray, as though time-lapse corrosion had been applied.
The Hound staggered, regeneration visibly stalled.
Daniel activated Blight Aura.
A faint violet haze expanded outward in a perfect sphere. The three adults convulsed simultaneously; fur sloughed in patches, muscle tissue visibly breaking down. The juvenile whimpered and retreated deeper into shadow.
Within twenty seconds the lead Hound collapsed, body desiccating at an accelerated rate.
[Entity Neutralization: Hound ×3 (assisted)] Reward: 240 System Points Pestilence Type 2 Progression: +120 / 500 Bonus: Corrosive Touch potency increased to 14%
Daniel deactivated the aura. The haze dissipated cleanly, leaving only the scent of dry rot.
Vannia approached, knife still drawn but lowered. "Controlled. Efficient. No collateral sanity drain on us."
Daniel examined the pipe. The metal now bore faint etchings along the striking surface—microscopic patterns resembling fungal hyphae.
"Integration successful," he stated. "The mark is not a curse. It is specialization."
Elias regarded the desiccated remains. "Gatekeepers do not grant power without intent. Mortis may have marked you because he foresaw utility—or because he intends to collect later."
Daniel met the operative's gaze evenly.
"Then we ensure the debt remains in our favor."
He shouldered the pipe and turned back toward the outpost.
Behind him, the juvenile Hound's whimpering ceased entirely.
The Backrooms had introduced a new vector into its own system.
And Daniel Voss now carried it forward.
