Chapter 18 - Chapter 18: No Way Back

The ride was silent.

Aria sat in the passenger seat, her hands clenched tightly in her lap, fingers pressing into her skin as if grounding herself in something real. Outside, the city lights blurred past, distant and meaningless.

She didn't look at him. Not even once.

Rafael didn't try to make her also. One hand rested on the steering wheel, the other relaxed, but there was nothing relaxed about him. His jaw was tight, his focus fixed ahead but his awareness was entirely on her.

Every breath she took, every shift in her posture.

The mansion gates opened before them without a word.

Just like before, nothing had changed but everything had.

The moment the car stopped, Aria reached for the door.

"Wait."

His voice wasn't loud but it stopped her instantly. Her hand froze mid-air.

Slowly, she turned her head just enough to look at him—not fully, not completely.

"What?" she asked, her voice guarded. Rafael didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he looked at her.

At the exhaustion she couldn't hide, the strength she tried to hold onto and the distance she was forcing between them.

"You don't walk in like a prisoner," he said finally.

Her brows tightened. "I am one."

"No," he replied calmly. "You're not."

A bitter laugh escaped her. "That's funny, coming from the man who just said I belong to him."

His gaze didn't waver.

"You're here because you couldn't leave," he corrected. That hit harder than she expected.

Aria looked away again, pushing the door open this time.

"I'm here because I had no choice." Rafael didn't argue.

But the silence that followed said he didn't believe her.

The mansion felt the same.

Too big.

Too quiet.

Too suffocating.

But this time… it felt different to Aria because she wasn't here as a guest.

She wasn't here temporarily.

She was here because she had nowhere else left to go.

Her steps slowed as she entered, memories hitting her all at once—the nights, the tension, the way everything between them had started spiraling out of control.

She hated that part the most because it wasn't just him, It was her too.

"Your room is ready." Rafael's voice came from behind her.

Aria stiffened slightly.

"My room?" she repeated.

"Yes."

She turned now, fully facing him for the first time since they arrived.

"I'm not staying in your room."

A pause. Then

"I didn't say you were."Something in his tone made her chest tighten.

Not anger.

Not control.

Something… restrained.

A maid appeared silently and guided Aria upstairs. The same hallway.

The same doors but a different ending.

When the door opened, Aria stepped inside slowly.

It wasn't the same room as before.

This one was simpler and next to his room.Elegant, but not overwhelming.

She frowned slightly.

Why?

Behind her, Rafael spoke.

"You'll stay here."

She turned, confusion slipping through her guarded expression.

"I thought you said—"

"The deal stands," he cut in. "But that doesn't mean I cage you."

Her eyes searched his face, trying to understand him.

That was the problem with Rafael. He didn't fit into anything simple.

Not villain or savior, something in between. Something dangerous.

"Why?" she asked quietly. It was a simple question.

But it carried everything.

Why bring her back?

Why give her space?

Why not take what he had already claimed?

Rafael held her gaze and for a moment…

He almost answered honestly.

But then—

"Because I don't need to force what's already mine."

The words were calm and confident.

Aria's expression hardened instantly.

"There it is," she murmured herself softly. "That's the Rafael I remember."

"Get some rest," he said instead.

Then he turned and walked away. The door closed.

And for the first time since returning Aria was alone. She stood there for a long moment, unmoving. Then slowly she exhaled. Her body felt heavy. Her mind louder than ever. She walked toward the bed but didn't sit. lnstead, she looked around the room again.

No chains.

No locks.

No force.

So why did it feel like she couldn't leave?

Because this time It wasn't the deal holding her back, It was him.

Aria closed her eyes, her hand pressing lightly against her chest.

Her heartbeat refused to calm.

"I won't lose again…" she whispered to herself.

But deep down she already knew, this wasn't a game she could win.
