Chapter 56 - The Third Signal

The world didn't return to normal.

It couldn't.

Not after that.

The noise faded—

But the silence that followed was worse.

Because now—

People knew.

They had felt each other's thoughts.

Heard strangers' fears.

Seen emotions that were never meant to be shared.

And even though the connection had weakened—

It hadn't disappeared.

Not completely.

Maya stood still in the hospital corridor.

Her breathing finally steady.

But her eyes—

Focused.

Distant.

"…it's still there," she whispered.

Ethan leaned against the wall slightly.

"…yeah."

A pause.

"Like background noise."

The system had stabilized—

But imperfectly.

Like something held together—

Not fixed.

Then—

A pulse.

Different.

Sharp.

Maya's head snapped up.

"…did you feel that?"

Ethan frowned.

"…yeah."

A pause.

"That's not us."

Because this—

Was new.

Not chaotic like the others.

Not controlled like the man.

This signal—

Was precise.

Clean.

And strong.

Somewhere else—

Someone else—

Had connected.

The system reacted instantly.

Threads shifted.

Re-aligning.

Focusing.

Like it was… recognizing something.

Maya's voice dropped.

"…it's responding to them."

Ethan's eyes narrowed.

"…or choosing them."

Before they could react—

The world flickered again.

But this time—

It wasn't breaking.

It was opening.

A street.

Different from before.

Not their location.

Not the hospital.

Another place entirely.

A girl stood in the middle of it.

Alone.

Still.

Cars around her had stopped.

People frozen mid-motion.

Time—

Paused.

Maya's breath caught.

"…who is that?"

The girl slowly lifted her head.

Her eyes—

Glowing faintly.

Just like Maya's had.

But steadier.

Colder.

When she spoke—

It wasn't panic.

It wasn't confusion.

It was control.

"…so this is what you've done."

Ethan straightened slightly.

"…yeah."

"That's not a victim."

The girl looked around—

At the frozen world—

At the threads connecting everything—

At the system itself.

Then—

She reached out.

And the threads moved.

Not randomly.

Not violently.

Perfectly.

Maya's eyes widened.

"…she's controlling it."

Ethan shook his head slightly.

"…no."

A pause.

"She's not controlling it."

The threads aligned around the girl.

Responding instantly.

Without resistance.

"…it's obeying her," he finished.

Silence.

Heavy.

Dangerous.

The girl's gaze lifted slightly—

And for a brief moment—

It felt like she was looking through the system.

Through everything.

Straight at them.

Maya froze.

"…Ethan."

"…yeah."

His voice was low.

Tense.

"She sees us."

The girl tilted her head slightly.

Studying.

Analyzing.

Then—

A faint smile.

Not warm.

Not friendly.

Curious.

"…you're the anomaly," she said.

The connection between Maya and Ethan pulsed—

Reacting.

Maya stepped forward instinctively.

"…who are you?"

A pause.

Then—

The girl answered simply:

"…I am what Origin was supposed to create."

Silence.

Ethan exhaled slowly.

"…yeah."

"That's not good."

The man's voice cut in suddenly—

Sharper than before.

Focused.

"…Subject Three."

That name hung in the air.

Heavy.

Important.

Maya's chest tightened.

"…Subject… Three?"

The girl didn't react to the title.

Didn't deny it.

Didn't accept it.

She simply looked at the world—

At the broken system—

At the unstable connections—

"…this is inefficient," she said calmly.

Maya's expression hardened.

"…these are people."

The girl looked at her.

Finally.

Directly.

"…they are variables."

That hit harder than anything the man had said.

Ethan stepped forward slightly.

"…yeah."

A pause.

"We're not doing this again."

The girl's gaze shifted to him.

Measuring.

"…you're emotional," she observed.

Ethan smirked faintly.

"…yeah."

A beat.

"And you're not."

Silence.

Then—

The system pulsed.

Hard.

Like it was reacting to a choice.

Maya felt it instantly.

The presence—

Origin itself—

Was watching.

Not neutral anymore.

Choosing.

Between them.

The girl.

Calm.

Controlled.

Perfectly aligned with logic.

Or—

Maya and Ethan.

Imperfect.

Emotional.

Unstable.

But human.

Maya's heart pounded.

"…it's deciding."

Ethan nodded once.

"…yeah."

A pause.

"So we make it an easy choice."

He looked at her.

That same certainty.

That same trust.

"…we show it what matters."

The system pulsed again—

Stronger.

And somewhere deep inside—

Something shifted.
