Chapter 26 - The Surge

Third-Person POV

It happened without warning.

No chant.

No signal.

No visible trigger.

One moment—

The academy was as it had been since the gate closed:

Restless.

Noisy.

Unsettled.

And the next—

Everything stopped.

A pressure spread outward.

Invisible—

But undeniable.

For two seconds—

The air itself felt heavier.

Students mid-conversation froze.

Instructors paused mid-step.

Even those who didn't understand mana—

Felt it.

A pulse.

Not explosive.

Not chaotic.

But deep.

Like something vast had shifted beneath the surface.

"…What was that…?" someone whispered.

No one answered.

Because no one could.

A chill followed.

Not cold—

But instinctive.

A reaction buried deep in the body.

Something primal.

Students felt it first.

Their shoulders tensed.

Breathing slowed.

Hearts skipped—

Then started beating faster.

"…Why do I feel like that…?" one student muttered, gripping his arm.

"…Like something's watching…" another whispered.

Others didn't speak at all.

Because what they felt—

Wasn't just pressure.

It was presence.

Heavy.

Unfamiliar.

And for some—

Terrifying.

A few stepped back instinctively.

Others looked around in unease.

One student near the courtyard swallowed hard.

"…That… didn't feel like normal mana…" he said.

No one disagreed.

Because it didn't.

It felt—

Deeper.

Like standing near something you weren't meant to understand.

Even among upperclassmen—

The reaction wasn't calm.

In the training grounds, a group of ranked students stiffened at the same time.

"…That pressure…" one said slowly.

"…Yeah," another replied, voice lower than usual.

"…That wasn't just strong."

A pause.

"…It felt wrong."

Not evil.

Not violent.

But—

Unsettling.

Like it didn't belong.

Inside the academic halls—

Silence lingered longer than it should have.

Then—

The noise returned.

Louder.

More frantic.

"…Did you feel that?!"

"…What was that?!"

"…That didn't feel like human mana!"

"…Was that even a student?!"

Panic didn't spread—

But unease did.

Because no one could explain it.

And that made it worse.

High above—

Instructors stood still.

Watching.

Analyzing.

"…That came from inside the academy," one said.

"…Yes."

"…Specific location?"

A pause.

Then—

"…Infirmary wing."

Silence.

That answer—

Meant something.

And they all understood it.

Back in the infirmary—

The air had already returned to normal.

The pressure—

Gone.

Like it had never existed.

But the healers hadn't moved.

Their eyes locked onto one bed.

Theo.

"…That was him," one said quietly.

Not a question.

A conclusion.

"…It came from his mana," the other added.

Neither of them approached immediately.

Because what they felt—

Wasn't just power.

It was weight.

Depth.

And something else—

Something that made even experienced healers hesitate.

"…It felt…" one began.

"…Intimidating," the other finished.

A brief silence followed.

"…And a little dangerous."

They didn't say more.

Because they didn't understand it.

Not yet.

Time passed.

But the academy didn't calm down.

That pulse—

Changed everything.

Rumors that had already begun spreading—

Now carried fear.

"…It came from the infirmary."

"…From one of the gate survivors."

"…I heard people froze when they felt it…"

"…I heard someone almost collapsed…"

"…Who was it…?"

Names began circulating again.

Faster.

More focused.

And once again—

One name kept returning.

Theo.

An hour later—

The infirmary was quieter.

Most of the injured were resting.

Some had woken.

Others were close.

And at the center—

Theo's fingers twitched.

Small.

Barely noticeable.

But enough.

A healer nearby glanced over.

Paused.

"…He's waking up."

Slowly—

Theo's breathing shifted.

From shallow—

To steady.

Then—

His eyes opened.

Light.

Soft.

Blurry.

I blinked.

Once.

Twice.

Theo's POV

The ceiling came into focus.

White.

Still.

"…I'm… alive…" I muttered.

My voice felt rough.

Unfamiliar.

But real.

I exhaled slowly.

Memories returned in fragments.

The fight.

The pressure.

The moment—

The impact.

And then—

That place.

The ocean.

The voice.

"…Adapt… and devour…"

I frowned slightly.

Not confused.

But focused.

Because I remembered it clearly.

Too clearly.

"…So it wasn't a dream…" I said quietly.

I lifted my hand slowly.

Carefully.

Watching.

Feeling.

Water formed.

Calm.

Controlled.

Normal.

I stared at it for a moment.

Then—

I focused inward.

Go deeper.

The change came instantly.

The water darkened.

Heavier.

Denser.

I watched it in silence.

"…So it's real…" I murmured.

Not just power.

Something else.

Something deeper.

I closed my hand.

The water disappeared.

But the feeling remained.

That depth.

That weight.

That presence.

A faint movement pulled my attention.

"…You're awake."

I turned.

A healer stood nearby, watching me carefully.

"…Yeah," I said.

"…How long?"

"…About an hour since the surge."

I paused.

"…Surge?"

The healer studied me.

"…Your mana expanded suddenly," they said.

"…Strong enough that a large part of the academy felt it."

I blinked.

"…Felt it how?"

A short pause.

Then—

"…Intimidated," the healer replied.

"…Some were scared."

Silence.

I looked down at my hand again.

Quiet.

Still.

Normal.

But I knew better now.

"…Guess things really changed…" I muttered.

Not just for me.

But for everyone else too.

Because now—

They felt it.

Even if they didn't understand it.

And that meant—

Things weren't going back to normal.
