Chapter 3 - Chapter 3- Calm Before And After The Storm

The castle was quiet after the night's chaos. The walls were scorched, and the guards were weary, but the immediate threat of the goblins had passed.

For the first time in hours, I could take a deep breath.

I found Lyra standing on the balcony, gazing at the horizon where the clouds still churned ominously. She looked almost like the Lyra I remembered from childhood fearless, clever, and unafraid.

"Kaelen," she said softly, turning to me. "Do you ever think about how we used to play in these halls as children?"

I smiled faintly, memories flooding back. "Of course. You always dared me to climb the tallest tower, even when I was scared. And somehow, I always did it."

She laughed, a sound that seemed to cut through the tension in the castle. "And I always made sure you didn't fall."

We leaned against the balcony railing in silence for a moment, listening to the wind whip through the trees.

You where a brave little girl "It's strange," I said finally, "how something as small as a game could feel like the beginning of everything… and now, everything is at stake."

Lyra's eyes softened. "Whatever comes next, we must face it together. You and I. For Eldoria."

I nodded, feeling a strange mix of relief and apprehension. This calm was temporary. The goblins were only the beginning, and I knew deep down that more dangers lurked beyond the horizon, waiting to test the kingdom and us in ways we could not yet imagine.

"Tomorrow, we train the soldiers again," I said. "The fought well but we don't know what's coming next we can't let our guard down."

Lyra's hand brushed mine, a silent reassurance. "I know."

We reached the makeshift barracks, where the soldiers were settling in for the night. I nodded to the guards, and the stepped aside allowing us to enter. The room was filled with the sounds of tired me and women, there armor battered and worn. They were alive and were ready and willing to fight.

We stopped at the center of the room, the noise of the soldiers dying down as the caught my gaze.

"Tomorrow, I said raising my voice across the room, we train, we must train hard, we train like our lives depends on it, because the do."

The soldiers nodded, a murmur of agreement running through the room. I turned to leave, Lyra following close behind me.

As we stepped back into the night, the cool air hit me like a slap. I took a deep breath feeling the weight of the day even settling in "get some rest," I told Lyra, Tomorrow will be a long day. She nodded, her eyes serious. "you too", and with that she turned disappearing into the night, leaving me alone with my thoughts.

As the night deepened, I gazed at the dark clouds above. Shadows were stirring. The battles ahead would not be easy, but with courage, skill, and a little luck, perhaps we could survive…

Or perhaps, Eldoria's greatest trials were yet to come.

The city of Eldoria slept under a silver moon, its streets quiet, its towers gleaming under the pale light. Golden fields beyond the walls swayed gently in the night breeze, and the markets were empty, their vibrant stalls now silent until dawn.

But not everyone rested.

At the edge of the city, in a small stone cottage nestled among the trees, Dr. Alaric Thorne worked quietly at his table, sorting through bundles of herbs and vials. The glow of a lantern flickered across his face, casting long shadows across the room. His wife, Serenya, hummed softly as she prepared a simple supper, the aroma of bread and roasted vegetables filling the air.

"Father, show me again," Elara, their seventeen test old daughter, pleaded, kneeling beside him. Her dark eyes shone with curiosity, her small hands mimicking his careful movements with a set of tiny tools.

"Again, my star," Alaric said with a soft smile. "But remember… healing is not just about the hands. It is about patience, observation, and listening. You must listen to what the patient cannot say, and the pains the try to hide."

Elara's gaze flickered to the window, where the moonlight touched the tips of the trees. "I'll listen… even to the shadows," she said quietly, a shiver of excitement running down her spine.

From the doorway, her Elder brother who was three years older than her, Darin, leaned casually on the frame, a small sword strapped across his back. His jaw was set, and a grin played on his lips, though the tension in his stance betrayed him.

"I don't need patience," he said, his voice playful but firm. "I need strength. I'll protect the city before anything even gets close."

Alaric chuckled softly. "Strength alone won't save you, Darin. Wisdom is just as important. Knowing when to fight, and when to wait, is what keeps people alive.

Serenya stepped forward, placing a hand on Darin's shoulder. "And courage, my boy. But courage without care can be reckless. Remember that."

Darin smirked, but the unease in his eyes remained. He looked out at the dark hills beyond the city walls, where shadows clung to the trees like living things.

Elara reached for his hand. "If anything happens to Eldoria, Darin… promise me you'll be careful."

"I promise," he said lightly, trying to hide the weight in his voice. "I doubt the goblins will come again."

Alaric's gaze drifted toward the distant hills, dark and still beneath the moonlight. His eyes narrowed slightly. "Doubt it all you want, son. But every shadow that moves in silence is watching. And not all of them are harmless, some of them are like us."

The family fell silent. Even Serenya stopped her humming. The wind rustled through the trees outside, carrying with it a faint scent of something strange, sulfur, earth, and something else that made the hairs on Alaric's arms rise.

Elara shivered. "Do you think it's the goblins?" she whispered.

Alaric's lips pressed together. He didn't answer immediately. Instead, he walked to the window, placing a hand on the cool glass as he peered toward the forest beyond the hills.

It's only a matter of time, Elara ," he finally said. "We must be ready… and careful. Eldoria's peace is fragile, and those who want to destroy Eldoria will not sit back and wait for us to be prepared."

Darin tightened his grip on his sword. "Then let them come," he said firmly. "I'll be ready."

A low, haunting howl drifted from the forest, faint but unmistakable. Elara flinched, and even Darin's confident grin faltered. It was a sound no ordinary animal could make. The hairs on their necks bristled.

Alaric's eyes darkened. "Keep the doors locked tonight," he said quietly. "Stay inside until sunrise. And Elara… stay close to me."

The siblings obeyed, moving closer to their parents. Lanterns were checked, herbs and remedies lined the shelves, and swords were polished. Outside, the wind intensified, carrying with it the faintest rustle of movement in the distance.

Hours passed, the night deep and silent, but the unease never left the cottage. Every creak of the floorboards, every whisper of the wind, set their hearts racing. Eldoria may have slept peacefully, but at the edge of the city, the first signs of danger were stirring, shadows waiting and plotting.

Elara lay in her bed with unease , staring at the ceiling, listening to the distant howl fade and return with a slightly sharper edge. "I think it's starting," she whispered. "I think it's really starting…"

Darin sat on the edge of his bed, sword resting across his lap. "Let it come," he muttered again. But his voice carried a tremor he didn't want anyone to hear.

Outside, the moon disappeared behind a cloud, and darkness stretched over the city like a cloak. Calm nights always had cracks.

And Eldoria's shadows where beginning to move.
