Chapter 14 - Chapter 14~The Palace Library

Evening settled quietly over the city of Eldoria, the sky fading from gold to deep shades of violet. Lanterns flickered to life along the palace corridors, casting soft pools of light across the polished stone floors.

Inside the palace, the halls were unusually quiet.

Most servants had finished their duties, and the guards stood at their posts with calm watchfulness.

Near one of the long archways, Elara stepped carefully into the corridor, adjusting the small cloak around her shoulders.

Though she had visited the palace before with her father, it still felt different being here on her own.

And especially like this.

"You're late," a familiar voice whispered from the shadows.

Elara turned.

Kaelen leaned casually against one of the tall columns, arms crossed.

"I'm not late," she replied. "You said evening."

"It is evening."

She glanced toward the hallway behind him.

"Are you sure this is a good idea?"

Kaelen pushed away from the column and walked toward her.

"You've been here before. It's not a big deal.

"Yes," Elara said. "With my father. And usually with guards watching."

Kaelen smiled slightly.

"Tonight you have me instead."

"That's not as reassuring as you think."

He chuckled softly.

"Come on. The library is this way."

They moved quietly through the palace halls, their footsteps echoing softly against the marble.

Soon they reached a pair of enormous carved doors.

Kaelen pushed one open.

The royal library stretched out before them like a hidden world.

Rows upon rows of towering shelves filled the vast chamber, stacked with ancient books, scrolls, and records that seemed older than the kingdom itself. Tall windows lined the walls, and lanterns hung from iron hooks above, casting warm light across the room.

Elara stopped in the doorway, staring.

"I have never imagined it will look so... Big and beautiful " she murmured.

Kaelen stepped beside her. "Largest library in Eldoria."

Elara slowly walked inside, running her fingers lightly across the spines of the books.

"Most people in the city probably don't even know half of these exist."

"That's because most of them are not friends with the prince," Kaelen replied.

She rolled her eyes at him. "And you expect us to find answers tonight?"

He shrugged. "will see."

They began searching the shelves, pulling down dusty volumes about creatures, magic, and ancient legends.

For a while the only sounds were the quiet turning of pages and the soft rustle of parchment.

Finally Elara spoke. "I found something."

Kaelen stepped closer.

"What is it?"

She turned the book toward him.

It showed an illustration of a strange creature — tall, powerful, with wings folded along its back and glowing eyes.

Kaelen frowned.

"That looks like—"

"The Varyndor," Elara finished.

They both leaned closer to the page.

The text beneath the illustration was written in old script.

Elara traced the words slowly as she read.

"The Varyndor… guardian of the ancient balance… known to appear in times when great power awakens within the kingdom."

Kaelen's expression shifted. "Great power?"

Elara kept reading.

"It is said that the Varyndor does not attack without reason. Instead, it watches… and sometimes protects those tied to the ancient light."

The room suddenly felt much quieter.

Elara slowly lowered the book.

"Ancient light," she whispered.

Both of them looked down at her wrist.

Kaelen spoke first. "That can't be coincidence."

Elara shook her head.

"No… but it also doesn't explain anything."

She flipped the page.

More text followed.

"This legend says the power appears only once in generations," she continued. "A force connected to the protection of the

kingdom itself."

Kaelen leaned back slightly.

"You're telling me the book is saying you might have some ancient power tied to Eldoria?"

Elara looked up at him.

"I'm saying the book is very dramatic."

Kaelen laughed quietly. "Fair point."

They stood in silence for a moment.

Then Kaelen reached for another book from the shelf beside them.

As he handed it to her, their fingers brushed again.

This time neither of them pulled away immediately.

Kaelen leaned closer, the space between them vanishing until his breath brushed against her lips.

Elara's mind spiraled into chaos.

Her heart pounded wildly, every thought slipping from her grasp as his presence overwhelmed her senses.

The moment stretched longer than it should have.

Elara was the first to move.

She cleared her throat softly and looked away, breaking whatever had formed between them.

"We should keep searching," she said, her voice quieter than before.

Kaelen didn't respond immediately.

Then he nodded. "Right."

But the faint smile on his lips lingered… as if he hadn't quite let go of the moment.

High above the library, on the shadowed balcony that overlooked the room, a figure stood silently between the shelves. Watching with prying eyes.

The spy Lysender had placed inside the palace had followed Kaelen earlier that evening.

Now he was observing everything.

The books. The conversation. And most importantly— Elara.

The man slipped quietly back into the shadows.

The general would want to hear about this.

Back in the library below, Elara closed the book slowly.

"Whatever this light is," she said, "I don't think it's going away."

Kaelen crossed his arms thoughtfully. "Then we'll figure it out."

She looked at him. "We?"

He nodded. You're not dealing with this alone."

Elara smiled faintly.

"You're very determined for someone who barely knows me."

Kaelen shrugged. "Maybe I'm just curious."

Elara raised an eyebrow.

"Or maybe," he added quietly, "I just want to make sure you're safe."

The words lingered between them.

Elara held his gaze for a moment longer than she intended, something unreadable flickering in her eyes.

"People don't usually go out of their way like this for someone the barely know," she said softly.

Kaelen tilted his head slightly. "Maybe they should."

A small silence followed—comfortable, but unfamiliar.

Elara looked down at her hands, her fingers tracing the edge of the book absentmindedly.

"You don't even know what this is," she murmured. "What if it's dangerous?"

Kaelen stepped a little closer, his expression steady.

"Then we will deal with it," he said simply.

"That's not a plan."

"It's enough for now."

She let out a quiet breath, somewhere between a sigh and a laugh. "You make it sound easy."

"It's not," he admitted. "But you won't have to face it alone."

Elara glanced up at him again.

For a moment, the faint glow beneath her skin flickered—soft, almost like a pulse.

Kaelen noticed. Of course he did.

His expression didn't change, but his eyes sharpened slightly.

"It's reacting again," he said.

Elara's smile faded. "I didn't even feel it this time…"

The light flickered once more—stronger now.

And then—

The candles lining the shelves trembled.Just slightly.

But enough.

Elara stilled.

"That's new," she whispered.

Kaelen's gaze shifted around the room, alert now.

"Yeah," he said quietly.

"…that's definitely new."
