Chapter 20 - Chapter 20~A Night Of Whispers

The palace of Eldoria glowed like a star against the darkening sky.

Lanterns lined the towering stone walls, their golden light reflecting off silk banners of blue and silver that hung from every balcony. Music drifted across the courtyard where nobles gathered in elegant gowns and tailored coats, their voices blending into a constant murmur of conversation.

Tonight was no ordinary celebration. Tonight the kingdom would witness the engagement of Prince Kaelen and Lady Lyra.

At the Palace Gates

Elara stood beside her parents and Darin outside the enormous palace gates.

Carriages rolled past them one after another as noble families arrived, stepping out dressed in shimmering fabrics and sparkling jewelry.

Elara smoothed the sleeves of her simple gown.

It wasn't extravagant like the dresses around her, but Serenya had helped prepare it carefully that afternoon. The soft fabric flowed gently to the ground, elegant in its quiet simplicity

A loose strand of her dark black hair fell across her face, and she tucked it behind her ear, revealing the soft glow of her grey eyes, eyes so much like her mother's. Her fair skin seemed almost luminous beneath the warm light, giving her a quiet, understated beauty that didn't need jewels to be noticed.

"You look beautiful," Serenya said warmly.

Standing beside her, Serenya's presence was just as striking,fair-skinned, graceful, and composed, her features carrying a gentle strength that lived on in her children.

Elara gave a nervous smile.

"I feel like everyone will know I don't belong here."

Alaric chuckled, stepping forward. Taller than both of them, his broad frame carried an easy authority. His brown hair, touched faintly with age, caught the light as he smiled calm, reassuring. His slightly darker complexion gave him a grounded, commanding presence. "Nonsense."

Beside him, Darin crossed his arms. He stood nearly as tall as his father, his posture confident, almost protective. His features carried a sharper edge black hair like his mother's, but his bright blue eyes, inherited from Alaric, gave him that same effortless charm. His skin tone, a shade deeper than Elara's, added to the resemblance he shared with his father.

"If anyone says anything," Darin said, his voice firm, "they'll answer to me."

Serenya sighed. "Please try not to threaten the nobles tonight."

"No promises."

A palace guard approached them.

"Alaric Thorne and family?"

Alaric nodded.

"You may enter." The gates slowly opened.

Elara took a steady breath before stepping in.

The courtyard seemed to shift.

Dozens of eyes turned not just to Elara, but to the family as a whole.

Whispers rippled through the crowd. "Who are they?"

"That's the healer from the city."

"And her family…"

"Why would the king invite them?"

"They don't look like common folk…"

Elara tried to ignore the murmurs as they walked deeper into the courtyard, her steps careful beside Serenya.

But it wasn't only her they were watching.

Some eyes lingered on Alaric, taking in his commanding presence and the quiet authority in the way he carried himself. Others studied Darin, noting the confidence in his stance, the sharpness in his gazeas though he belonged among warriors, not courtiers.

And then, inevitably, their attention returned to Elara.

Not every whisper carried mockery.

Near one of the lantern-lit tables, a group of noblewomen observed them with quiet curiosity.

"That must be the healer," one woman murmured, her gaze flicking briefly to Alaric. "And his family."

Her companion tilted her head slightly, studying them one by one before her eyes settled on Elara.

"The daughter…" she said softly. "She's quite beautiful."

Another noblewoman nodded.

"And she isn't even dressed like the rest of us."

A nobleman nearby joined their conversation, his gaze moving between them.

"The father carries himself like a man of rank," he noted. "And the son he has the look of a knight."

Then his attention shifted back to Elara.

"Imagine how she would look in a proper royal gown."

The first woman smiled thoughtfully.

"She would outshine half the court."

A younger guest laughed softly.

"Perhaps more than half."

The whispers spread further.

"There's something about her presence," someone added. "She doesn't seem intimidated."

"Natural grace," another replied. "You can't teach that."

Elara didn't hear every word, but she felt the shift in the atmosphere.

Some of the nobles were still curious.

But others were watching her with quiet admiration.

Serenya noticed too.

She leaned closer and whispered gently,

"You see? Not everyone here is judging you."

Elara gave a small smile.

"I still feel like I walked into the wrong place."

Serenya squeezed her hand.

"Sometimes the right place feels that way at first."

Not far away, another person had heard the conversation. Lyra.

She stood beside a marble pillar speaking with guests, her elegant silver gown shimmering under the lantern light.. But her attention had drifted toward the group whispering nearby.

"…she would outshine half the court."

Lyra's smile remained perfectly polite, but something inside her tightened.

Her gaze shifted toward Elara across the courtyard.

The healer's daughter stood beside her family, the lantern light catching softly in her hair.

Outshine half the court?

Lyra's fingers tightened slightly around her glass.

This is my engagement celebration.. My night.

And yet the nobles were whispering about someone else. About the healer's daughter.

Lyra straightened her posture and smoothed the folds of her gown.

If the court wanted something to talk about,

she would give them something.

With a composed smile returning to her face, Lyra began walking directly toward Elara.

Across the Courtyard. At the same moment, Prince Kaelen stood near the palace steps speaking with visiting nobles.

He had spent the entire evening greeting guests and accepting congratulations.

But his thoughts were elsewhere. Then he saw her.

For a moment everything around him faded.

Elara she looked gorgeous.

She stood beneath the lantern light beside her family, her dress moving softly in the evening breeze.

He hadn't seen her in two weeks. And now she was here.

Without thinking, Kaelen excused himself and began walking toward her.
