Chapter 5 - chapter 5: The Awakening within

Adrian couldn't focus for the rest of the day.

The classroom felt normal again. Too normal.

Students laughed, whispered, passed notes—completely unaware that just moments ago, deadly creatures had been crawling across the ceiling.

But Adrian knew the truth.

And now… he knew something even more disturbing.

He wasn't normal either.

His eyes drifted to his hand—the same hand that had unleashed that burst of shadow energy.

I used it… I actually used it…

A quiet voice broke his thoughts.

"You're overthinking."

Adrian turned.

Kai was leaning back in his chair, one arm resting casually on the desk, watching him.

Adrian frowned. "How can I not overthink this? I just—" he lowered his voice, "—used shadow magic!"

Kai didn't look surprised.

"You didn't just use it," he said calmly. "You controlled it."

Adrian blinked. "Isn't that the same thing?"

"No," Kai replied. "Most people who awaken power lose control at first. They panic. They get overwhelmed." His eyes narrowed slightly. "But you didn't."

Adrian hesitated.

"I was scared," he admitted.

Kai tilted his head slightly. "Exactly."

Adrian frowned, confused.

Kai leaned forward, lowering his voice.

"Fear usually makes shadows unstable. But yours responded… smoothly. Almost like they recognized you."

Adrian felt a strange chill at those words.

"Recognized me…?"

Kai didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he stood up.

"Come with me after school," he said.

Adrian blinked. "Where?"

Kai glanced at him.

"Back to the warehouse."

---

After School

The sun was already setting when they arrived.

The abandoned warehouse stood silent, just as it had before. Broken windows, cracked walls, shadows stretching across the floor like waiting hands.

Adrian stepped inside slowly.

This place no longer felt unfamiliar.

If anything…

It felt like it was calling to him.

Kai walked ahead, stopping in the center of the room.

"Show me what you did," he said.

Adrian froze. "Right now?"

Kai nodded. "Yes."

Adrian swallowed.

"What if I can't?"

Kai's gaze softened slightly.

"You can."

Something about the way he said it made Adrian's chest tighten.

He took a deep breath and raised his hand.

"Okay… I'll try."

At first, nothing happened.

The warehouse remained silent.

Adrian frowned.

"I don't feel anything…"

Kai watched him closely.

"Don't force it. Just… feel."

Adrian closed his eyes.

He remembered the classroom.

The fear.

The moment the Wraith had lunged at him.

His heart began to beat faster.

And then—

He felt it.

A faint, cold energy curling around his fingers.

His eyes snapped open.

Dark shadows were forming in his palm.

They moved slowly at first… then faster.

Adrian gasped.

"It's happening again!"

The shadows grew stronger, swirling like smoke.

But this time, they didn't feel wild.

They felt… calm.

Controlled.

Like they were waiting for his command.

Kai's expression changed.

He stepped closer.

"Good," he said quietly. "Now shape it."

Adrian blinked. "Shape it?"

"Imagine what you want it to become."

Adrian hesitated.

Then slowly, he focused.

The shadows shifted.

They stretched outward, forming something sharp—like a blade.

Adrian's eyes widened.

"I… I made that?"

Kai nodded, impressed.

"Yes."

For a moment, silence filled the warehouse.

Then Kai spoke again.

"You're learning too fast."

Adrian lowered his hand slightly.

"Is that… bad?"

Kai didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he reached out.

His fingers gently wrapped around Adrian's wrist.

Adrian froze.

The contact sent a sudden warmth through his body.

Kai's grip was firm, but not harsh.

"Your power…" Kai murmured, studying the shadows still swirling around Adrian's hand.

"…it's different."

Adrian's breath caught.

"How?"

Kai looked up at him.

Their eyes met.

For a brief moment, everything felt still.

"It responds to emotion," Kai said quietly. "But not just fear."

Adrian's heart skipped.

"What else?"

Kai didn't let go of his wrist.

Instead, his grip softened slightly.

"…Connection."

Adrian felt his face heat up.

"C-connection?"

Kai seemed to realize how close they were.

He let go quickly and stepped back.

"Yes," he said, returning to his usual calm tone. "Which makes it unpredictable."

Adrian lowered his hand slowly.

The shadow blade dissolved into smoke.

"So… what does that mean for me?"

Kai's expression darkened slightly.

"It means you're not just a normal shadow user."

A cold breeze passed through the warehouse.

The shadows along the walls shifted slightly.

Kai's voice dropped.

"It means you might be something the Wraiths have been searching for."

Adrian felt a chill run down his spine.

"Searching for…?"

Kai turned toward the darkness.

"For a long time."

Adrian swallowed.

"Why me?"

Kai didn't answer.

Instead, he looked back at Adrian, his glowing blue eyes filled with something deeper than before.

"Because," he said quietly,

"your power might be the key to something far bigger than both of us."

Adrian's heart pounded.

Fear.

Excitement.

Confusion.

All of it mixed together.

But one thing was clear now.

This wasn't just about survival anymore.

It was something much bigger.

And whatever it was…

He was already too deep to turn back.
