Chapter 32 - Chapter 32: Don't Let Go

The world felt like it was holding its breath.

No one moved.

No one spoke.

Everything—hunters, Harbingers, even the shifting darkness—paused around a single moment.

Adrian.

Standing at the center.

Drifting.

"…Don't come closer."

His voice echoed, quiet but sharp, like something barely holding together.

Kai didn't stop.

"I'm not leaving you."

Each step he took felt heavier, like the air itself resisted him.

The darkness reacted immediately.

Shadows surged outward, rising between them like a barrier.

"…I said stop."

Adrian's head tilted slightly.

His eyes—

Dark.

Too dark.

But not empty.

Not yet.

Kai slowed.

But he didn't retreat.

"…You're still in there," Kai said.

Adrian didn't respond.

The mark on his wrist pulsed.

Once.

Twice.

Faster.

"…It hurts," Adrian muttered.

The words slipped out before he could stop them.

Kai's chest tightened.

"I know."

"…No," Adrian whispered. "You don't."

The shadows trembled violently.

"…It's not just power…"

His fingers curled slowly.

"…It's like it's rewriting me…"

The presence echoed softly.

"…Becoming you…"

Adrian flinched.

"Stop—!"

The ground cracked again.

Darkness surged upward.

The Harbingers stirred—

But didn't attack.

They were watching.

Waiting.

For him.

---

The Fight Within

Kai stepped forward again.

This time—

Slower.

Careful.

"…Look at me."

Adrian didn't.

"…I can't."

Kai's voice softened—just slightly.

"You can."

Adrian's breathing grew uneven.

"…If I do…"

A pause.

"…I might lose what's left."

Silence.

Kai didn't hesitate.

"Then I'll hold onto it for you."

That made Adrian's head lift.

Just slightly.

Their eyes met.

For a second—

The darkness cracked.

"…Kai…"

Kai didn't look away.

"I'm here."

The bond pulsed.

Faint.

But there.

Adrian's shadows flickered.

Conflicted.

"…You always say that…"

His voice trembled.

"…But what if this time… it's not enough?"

Kai stepped closer.

"Then I won't let it be the end."

The presence surged.

Violently.

"…He cannot save you…"

The voice cut through everything.

Cold.

Certain.

"…He will fail… like before…"

Kai's expression hardened.

"…Not this time."

Adrian's breath hitched.

"…Before…?"

The voice pressed harder.

"…You already know…"

Fragments flashed through Adrian's mind.

Not his memories.

But something else.

Something darker.

Kai—

Standing in shadow.

Another figure—

Falling.

Gone.

Adrian staggered.

"…What is that—?!"

Kai's eyes widened slightly.

"…Don't listen to it."

But Adrian's gaze shook.

"…It's showing me…"

His voice dropped.

"…You killed someone like me."

Silence.

Heavy.

Dangerous.

Kai didn't answer.

And that—

Was enough.

Adrian stepped back.

"…So it's true."

Kai took a step forward.

"…Adrian—"

"You said you wouldn't let me disappear," Adrian continued.

His voice shook.

"…But you've already done it before."

Kai's chest tightened.

"That's not—"

"So what am I to you?" Adrian cut in.

The shadows around him surged.

Angrier now.

"…Another mission?"

"No."

The answer came instantly.

Firm.

Certain.

Adrian froze.

Kai stepped closer.

"…You're not the same."

Adrian laughed softly.

"…That's what you said last time too?"

Kai didn't respond.

Because—

He couldn't.

---

The Breaking Point

The presence surged again.

Stronger.

Closer.

"…You see…?"

"…He hesitates…"

"…He will choose the world over you…"

Adrian's grip tightened.

"…Stop talking…"

"…Or…"

The voice lowered.

More dangerous.

"…Choose me…"

The darkness wrapped tighter around Adrian.

Pulling.

Claiming.

The mark burned like fire.

"…I can make it stop…"

Adrian's breathing broke.

"…No…"

"…No more pain…"

"…No more doubt…"

"…No more fear…"

The words echoed.

Tempting.

Relentless.

Kai stepped forward again.

This time—

Right into the darkness.

"Kai—!" someone shouted from behind.

But he didn't stop.

He reached Adrian.

Close enough.

"…Listen to me."

Adrian's eyes flickered.

"…I can't—"

"Yes, you can."

Kai grabbed his hand.

The contact—

Sent a shock through both of them.

The shadows froze.

The world stilled.

The bond pulsed.

Strong.

Clear.

Alive.

"…You're still you," Kai said.

Adrian's breath shook.

"…I don't feel like it…"

Kai tightened his grip.

"Then feel this instead."

Adrian's eyes widened slightly.

The connection—

Was different this time.

Deeper.

Stronger.

Not just power.

Not just control.

Emotion.

Memory.

Presence.

Kai's voice lowered.

"…I'm not losing you."

The words hit harder than anything else.

Adrian's expression cracked.

"…Why…?"

Kai didn't hesitate.

"…Because you matter."

Silence.

The darkness trembled.

The presence reacted.

Violently.

"…Lies—!"

The shadows surged—

Trying to tear them apart.

But Kai didn't let go.

Neither did Adrian.

"…You're wrong," Adrian whispered.

The voice pressed harder.

"…You will break…"

Adrian shook his head.

"…Maybe…"

A pause.

"…But not like this."

The mark pulsed.

Once.

Twice.

Then—

It dimmed.

The darkness faltered.

Just slightly.

But enough.

Adrian tightened his grip on Kai's hand.

"…I'm still here."

Kai exhaled quietly.

"…Good."

---

The Shift Back

The shadows slowly receded.

Not gone.

But weaker.

Less dominant.

The presence stilled.

Watching.

Calculating.

"…Interesting…"

Adrian stood there, breathing hard.

But present.

Still himself.

"…That all you've got?" Adrian muttered.

The darkness didn't answer immediately.

Then—

"…This is not over…"

Adrian smirked faintly.

"…I figured."

Kai didn't let go of his hand.

"…We're leaving."

Riven's voice came through sharply.

"Fall back—now!"

The hunters moved quickly.

Retreating.

Because this—

Wasn't a battle they could finish today.

Adrian took one last look at the darkness.

At the presence watching him.

Waiting.

"…Next time," Adrian said quietly.

The voice whispered back.

"…Next time…"

---

Aftermath

As they crossed back through the breach—

The pressure lifted.

The world snapped back into place.

Normal.

Or as close to normal as it could be.

Adrian staggered slightly.

Kai steadied him immediately.

"…Easy."

Adrian let out a breath.

"…That was… a lot."

Kai nodded.

"Yes."

A pause.

Adrian glanced at him.

"…You didn't let go."

Kai's voice was quiet.

"I won't."

Adrian smiled faintly.

"…Good."

Because this time—

He believed it.
