Feng Jingxin finally cheered up, rattling off all her favorite foods in one breath. Feng Tingshen sat nearby, listening quietly.
Once the little girl finished, Lin Wu began praising her outfit. "The clothes Xinxin is wearing today are so pretty. They really suit you."
"Really?"
Lin Wu smiled. "Of course it's true." She then asked, "How was school today, Xinxin? Are you getting along well with the other children?"
The two of them chatted happily, exchanging words back and forth. Feng Tingshen rarely interjected, simply using his knife and fork to dine with slow, deliberate movements. To an oblivious server watching them, they looked exactly like a happy family of three, and the waiter cast an envious glance toward Lin Wu.
It was then that Feng Jingxin saw a video call request from Rong Ci. It was a call she herself had asked for that morning. But now, she was having such a wonderful time talking to Lin Wu that she couldn't bear to hang up on her.
She had been upset that morning when she saw Rong Ci hugging another child. However, her teacher had said during class that parents love their own children most of all that in every mother's heart, her child is unique and can never be surpassed by anyone else. That thought had set her mind at ease.
When Feng Jingxin failed to pick up, Rong Ci grew worried and placed a call to the head teacher. The teacher was currently in the children's lounge. Upon hearing the reason for the call, she said with a smile, "Xinxin is fine. She's currently on a video call with her father and some auntie... Tell you what, I'll head over and tell her to"
"No need to trouble yourself."
Hearing that, Rong Ci knew exactly what was happening. Feng Jingxin was on a call with Lin Wu and Feng Tingshen. This meant Feng Tingshen was likely having dinner with Lin Wu at that very moment.
She said softly, "It's fine. Let them talk. Don't disturb them."
After hanging up, Rong Ci sent Feng Jingxin a text message instead, asking how her day was, if she made new friends, and what she had for lunch. She reminded her to listen to the teacher and go to sleep on time.
Ten minutes later, Rong Ci received a voice message from her daughter. "I know, Mommy. I'll sleep well."
Throughout the afternoon, Rong Ci spent her time working with Xu Xuena. She found the secretary to be outgoing, socially adept, and quite capable.
As six o'clock rolled around and Rong Ci was preparing to head home, Xu Xuena approached her, offering to treat her to dinner as thanks for her guidance that day.
"It's just part of my job. There's no need to be so formal, Secretary Xu."
Before Xu Xuena could try to persuade her further, Rong Ci's phone rang. It was her mother in law, Sang Qian. Rong Ci stared at the screen, momentarily thinking she had misread the name. Sang Qian looked down on her as a daughter in law and usually treated her with cold indifference. Over the years, the number of times Sang Qian had contacted her could be counted on one hand.
Rong Ci answered tentatively. "Mom?"
"Tingyi has been secretly getting into racing lately. I don't trust him. I'm sending you an address; go there and bring him back for me."
Sang Qian didn't waste a single extra word. Having issued the command, she hung up immediately. A few seconds later, an address popped up on Rong Ci's phone. It was a suburban racetrack.
Rong Ci turned to Xu Xuena. "I'm sorry, I have an urgent matter to handle. I have to go."
It took over an hour for Rong Ci to reach her destination. The racetrack was massive and crowded even late at night. The atmosphere was deafening. Feng Tingyi wasn't answering his phone, so Rong Ci had no choice but to search the grounds.
It took her nearly twenty minutes to find him. When Feng Tingyi saw her, he was stunned. "Sister in law? What are you doing here?"
Rong Ci explained her purpose.
Feng Tingyi immediately raised his hand as if taking an oath. "Look, my goddess the number one female racer in Asia, CC is competing for the first time since returning to the country. I can't miss this! I promise, I'll go back the moment the race is over. I won't cause any trouble! So please, just let me be. You head back first!"
"But"
Before Rong Ci could finish, the crowd ahead erupted, chanting the name "CC" with wild excitement.
"My goddess is coming out?!"
Hearing the commotion, Feng Tingyi completely forgot about Rong Ci. He began shouting along with the rest of the spectators, grabbing a pair of binoculars and staring intently at the starting line.
Seeing the fanatical fervor on his face, Rong Ci was surprised. "When did you start liking racing?" she asked. Though they didn't spend much time together, she knew he had never shown interest in the sport before.
"I didn't care for racing before but that was because I hadn't met my goddess yet! Do you have any idea how beautiful and cool she is? Once you see her, you'll understand why I love this sport! In fact, I'm certain you'll be fascinated by her too. My goddess is so perfect, it's impossible not to love her!"
At that moment, CC made her official entrance. Feng Tingyi went wild again, screaming and jumping, totally oblivious to Rong Ci standing next to him.
Rong Ci hadn't eaten dinner yet. Seeing how obsessed he was with this CC and noting that since he wasn't the one actually racing and the noise was too loud for any real conversation, she decided to stay and watch the race with him before taking him home.
A moment later, Feng Tingyi shoved the binoculars into her hands, still frantically trying to "sell" her on his idol. "Sister in law, look! Number 38! The one in the red racing suit! She is incredibly sexy and wild!"
Rong Ci had no interest in racing, but forced to accept his enthusiasm, she took the binoculars with a wry smile. She adjusted them and took a single look. Then, she froze.
Lin Wu.
CC was actually Lin Wu?
She had heard people say that Lin Wu was a natural at extreme sports, but she had no idea she raced let alone that she was good enough to have so many young men and women fanatically obsessed with her.
In that moment, Lin Wu was dressed in a dark red, form-fitting racing suit. Her figure was tall and slender, her curves both sexy and elegant. She looked bold, wild, and stunning, a sight so eye-catching it was impossible to look away.
Rong Ci shifted the lens slightly, accidentally catching the spectator stands on the far side. There, she saw Feng Tingshen.
At this moment, he too seemed captivated by Lin Wu, his gaze fixed on her with absolute focus.
Rong Ci's grip on the binoculars tightened.
As the race was about to begin, an impatient Feng Tingyi snatched the binoculars back. Rong Ci continued to stare in Feng Tingshen's direction. She realized that he wasn't alone; their daughter, Feng Jingxin, was there, along with several of Feng Tingshen's closest friends. It was obvious they had all come specifically to cheer for Lin Wu.
Several race cars streaked past them in a blur of speed, drifting into the distance and triggering a wave of screams from the crowd.
Feng Tingyi watched for a while before shoving the binoculars back into Rong Ci's hands. "Sister in law, look! My goddess drives so boldly yet so steadily. She's so cool! Look!"
Rong Ci took them and found Lin Wu again. A moment later, Lin Wu took a daring, high-stakes risk, seizing a split-second opening to perform an extreme overtake on a sharp bend. The crowd was stunned by her audacity, and gasps of amazement echoed through the stands.
Rong Ci had never followed racing before. In this moment, even she was struck by Lin Wu's sheer boldness.
She stood still for a long time. She suddenly felt that there was a very good reason why Feng Tingshen would be so fascinated by this woman.
