The words hit Camilla like a sudden bucket of ice water. Her entire body froze solid under his embrace. The breath caught in her throat, and she stopped moving completely. Her mind went entirely blank for a second.
Damon did not let go of her. He kept his arms tight around her back, continuing to stroke her hair with extreme care.
"Who are you?" Damon asked softly, his tone full of warmth rather than anger or suspicion. "You can tell me."
Camilla lay still against his chest. She listened to the steady beat of his heart. She realized there was no point in lying anymore. He had watched her fight, he had seen her use strange skills, and he had even seen her use the musket accurately. The wall she had built around herself was gone.
She thought to herself, "I have been caught. I might as well just say the truth."
